Dow Corning's line of conformal coatings includes three basic families:

RTV Elastomeric Coatings, the newest of these, are designed to provide fast to very fast room temperature curing in a soft, stress-relieving material.
The next group, the RTV Elastoplastic Coatings, is either traditional or ozone-safe solvent-based coatings that provide good abrasion resistance with the expected good board protection.
The third group, the Solventless Heat Cure Coatings, is fast heat-curing one-part coatings that again combine excellent protection in a soft, stress-relieving material.
All conformal coatings contain a UV indicator enabling blacklight visualization of the coating.

Conformal coating process in PCB Assembly manufacturing Many purchasing managers are aware of the different processes used in contract manufacturing for printed circuit boards, but they aren't always clear about when and why certain capabilities matter. Conformal coating is one of those processes. It can save your boards from an early death, but only if it's done right.

Conformal coating means applying an acrylic or other specialized material to protect boards from contamination that can lead to failure. Usually, we're trying to block moisture from condensation, which is a concern in any environment where temperatures fluctuate -- that is, just about any outdoor application (especially military and automotive).

You've undoubtedly seen condensation first hand -- perhaps last summer as moisture from the warm air condensed on the surface of your cool beverage can. The same thing happens to electronics -- for example, as airborne systems descend from cold altitudes to warmer ground elevations.

Conformal coating can be applied manually with a brush or sprayer, but this has serious drawbacks. Because brush application is labor-intensive and yields inconsistent results, it is rarely used for production boards. Spray application is more common, but even skilled operators have a hard time getting consistent coverage. The coating thickness will vary, and areas such as the corners of surface mount ICs may be left exposed.

What’s conformal coating?
Conformal coating is the process of spraying a dielectric material onto a device component to protect it from moisture, fungus, dust, corrosion, abrasion, and other environmental stresses. Common conformal coatings include silicone, acrylic, urethane, epoxy, and Parylene. Parylene is a unique polymer conformal coating that conforms to virtually any shape including crevices, points, sharp edges, and flat, exposed internal surfaces. Parylene is a higher level coating process. It used on high quality, reliable,precision requirement products,such as medical equipments. Three normal way to do conformal coating process
Brush coating works by flow coating the material onto the board and is suitable for low volume application, finishing and repair. The finish tends to be inferior cosmetically and can be subject to many defects such as bubbles. The coating also tends to be thicker and unless skilled operators used the coating, highly subjective in quality. And in this way you can add some fluorescent material to your coating liquid and when you work under a fluorescent lamp you can easily to find out which area or space is not covered the coating.

Conformal Coating is the process of spraying or dispensing a dielectric material onto a device component to protect it from moisture, fungus, dust, corrosion, abrasion, and other environmental stresses. When electronics must withstand harsh environments, most circuit board assemblers coat electronic assemblies with a layer of transparent conformal coating rather than potting. Recently, conformal coatings have been used to reduce or eliminate the potential for tin whiskers. Conformal coating is a protective non conductive dielectric layer that is applied onto the printed circuit board assembly to protect the electronic assembly from damage due to contamination, salt spray, moisture, fungus, dust and corrosion caused by harsh or extreme environments.


It is usually used in products that are used in outdoor environments where heat and moisture are prevalent. Coating also prevents damage from rough handling, installation, reduction of mechanical and thermal stress. It also prolong the life of the product during its operation.

At the same time, it helps to increase the dielectric strength between conductors enabling the design of the PCB to be more compact and small. It also acts to protect circuitry and components from abrasion and solvents.
