How to make really really good homemade PCBs

This page is a guide to producing consistently high quality PCBs quickly and efficiently, particularly for professional prototyping of production boards. Unlike most other PCB homebrew guides, emphasis is placed on quality, speed and repeatability rather than minimum materials cost, although the time saved by getting good PCBs every time usually saves money in the long run - even for the hobbyist, the cost of ruined PCB laminates can soon mount up!

The techniques for drilling copperclad for double-sided and multilayer PCBs with automated equipment are identical, with the exception that multiple drilling steps will be needed if your multilayer design includes buried or blind vias. Refer to the documentation that came with your drilling machine for more information (standard boilerplate cop-out).
Items to remember include:

set the STACK HEIGHT parameter to clear all dowel pins during traverse
set the SPINDLE FEED (inches per minute) and SPINDLE SPEED (RPM) for each drill size to values consistent with drilling standard 0.062" (1.6mm) FR-4 copperclad.
set the SPINDLE PLUNGE DEPTH so that the tip of the largest diameter drill bit fully enters the backing material. Otherwise, these large diameter holes will not totally penetrate to bottom laminate and exit foil.
DO NOT contour route the board immediately after drilling the stack. This should only be done after all other processing is complete.
Manual drilling

Do you lack power tools (power drill, dremel, etc)? are you wary to use them? are you unable to get proper drilling precision because you lack a drill stand? and/or are on a severe budget or el cheap-o mode? And still... you really need to those holes done on your recently homemade PCB? Well, look no further, this tip is for you. Hand drilling resorting to an Archimedes drill.

This is my first instructable.
I am just a hobbyist who interested making circuits and their pcb's in complete DIY manner.i saw lot of articles of home made PCBs.they were quite good except one step.making holes for mounting components.start from laser printing the PCB layout to mounting the components you can carry out in home except the drilling procedure.you shld have a drilling machine with small drill chuck,which is capable of holding 0.5-1.5 drills.
Then i had in my mind,why not DIY PCB Hand drilling machine.
My goal is to built one from junk which is capable of drilling small holes to mount components.

Remember this is not sort of professional drilling machine.with it u can just make holes small enough to mount electronic components over PCB.
Finishing of the drilled holes will depend up on the type of drill you used.(made)

Below is my PCB hand drill and my PCB making setup.

When using a conventional drill press, hole placement accuracy can be improved and drill breakage minimized through the use of a "sensitive drilling" or "finger" chuck. Small format, precision high-speed drill presses, ideal for PCB fabrication, are also available from a number of sources.
Regardless of the type of drill press being used, a pressure foot should be employed if available.
If available, position a work lamp on a flexible mount as close to the work surface as possible.
Although more brittle than conventional high speed steel (HSS) drills, tungsten carbide bits designed specifically for PCB drilling will yield far superior hole wall quality. minimize burr formation, and outlast HSS bits almost 10 to 1. The downside is that, with smaller diameters [0.018"(0.46mm) and less], the carbide drills are easier to break and must be handled carefully.

Printed circuit board (PCB) composed of glass fiber reinforcement plastic and copper foil is a kind of typical composite material. The cutting process of fiber reinforcement plastic materials such as carbon fiber or glass fiber reinforcement plastic materials have been studied for many years, but the drilling process of printed circuit board using microdrill is more complicated than common carbon fiber reinforcement plastic materials. Clean off the protective coating from the PCB using a PCB rubber or steel wool so that all the copper tracks are bright and shiny. The PCB rubber has grit in it to make it very abrasive.
In fact the coating can be left on and it should melt away around the joints as you solder but you may get better results by removing the coating.
Drill the holes with a 1mm diameter bit. This is easiest with a proper electric PCB drill in a stand, but a hand-held miniature electric drill can be used if you take care to avoid twisting and snapping the small drill bit. Wear safety spectacles.
A hand-drill is not suitable for such small bits unless you are very skilled.
A few may holes may need to be larger, for example preset resistors usually need a 1.5mm diameter hole. It is simplest to re-drill these special holes afterwards.
Check carefully to make sure you find all the holes.
Even with experience it is easy to miss one or two!
WARNING! The small drill bits are fragile. Drill gently but firmly. If you are using a hand-held drill you must take great care to avoid twisting the drill sideways because this will snap the drill bit.

Prepare the stacks for drillng
To set up the drill the operator first puts a panel of exit material on the drill bed. This stops the drill tearing the copper foil as it comes through the PCB. Then he loads one or more PCB panels, and a sheet of aluminium entry foil.

Drilling the holes
The drilling machine is computer-controlled. The operator selects the right drill program. This tells the machine which drill to use and the X Y co-ordinates of the holes. Our drills use air-driven spindles which can rotate up to 150,000 revolutions per minute. High speed drilling ensures clean hole walls to provide a secure base for good plating on the hole walls.

Drilling is a slow process as each hole must be drilled individually. So depending on the drill size we drill a stack of one to three PCB panels together. We can drill holes down to 100 microns in diameter. To give you an idea of the size, the diameter of a human hair is about 150 microns. Drill change is fully automatic. The machine selects the drill to use from the drill rack, checks that it is the correct size, and then loads it into the drill head.

Once all the holes are drilled the operator unloads the panels from the drilling machine and discards the entry and exit material.

I was sure this was asked before but a forum seach came up with ZIP.

I need to get somthing better to drill PCBs with. What do you use ? How well does it work? Do you break bits?

We have a dremel but some have said there is too much play in the dremel drill press stand to use it with carbide bits. Others say it works fine.
I have found "Milescraft 1097 Rotary Tool Drill Press Stand" for $35 on Amazon.com. It looks similar to the Dremel 220-01 Rotary Tool Work Station $40.

I would rather not spend the money on the MICROLUX 3-SPEED STANDARD DUTY DRILL PRESS $160 + shipping. But if the others are iffy I will.




Simple DIY PCB Drilling

The next step in DIY printed circuit board (pcb) fabrication after designing the pcb layout and etching the PCB is drilling the holes. Drilling holes was much easier than I anticipated, probably because I chose the right tools.

I needed mini carbide drill bits and a Dremel drill press / workstation or one like it (recommended by one online forum for DIY PCB fabrication).

This information has been condensed from over 20 years' experience of making PCBs, mostly as prototypes of boards to be put into production. If you follow the methods outlined here exactly, you WILL get excellent quality PCBs every time. By all means experiment, but remember that cutting corners can easily reduce quality & waste time.

I will only consider photographic methods in depth - other methods such as transfers, plotting on copper and the various 'iron-on' toner transfer systems are not really suited for fast, repeatable use. Although I've heard some good reports from some toner transfer systems, the problem with these is that the 'expensive part' is the film, and you can't really feed much less than an A5 sheet through a laser printer, so you waste a lot on small PCBs. With photoresist laminate and cheap transparency media, you only use as much of the expensive part (the board) as you need, and offcuts can usually be used later for smaller boards. Double-sided PCBs are also rather tricky with toner-transfer methods.
