Supporting the military is something Surmotech is very proud of, and we were contracted to assemble a PCB for use in a military communications application. The RF PCB assembly used Rogers 4003 material, and the board required surface mount technology for the double-sided assembly that featured 250 placements. Board specs included 3 layers, standard vias, and 1 panelization. Final measurements came to 8 x 5.75 in. We performed final testing using automated optical inspections and x-ray inspection before delivering product to the customer.

I need to do some comparison between the PCb board FR4 and Rogers and what is the highest frequency I can set for each of the board. I have found the datasheet for both of it but none of the datasheet stated the frequency range for the pcb board.

Visitors to Rogers’ Booth #101 are invited to find out how halogen-free Theta® circuit materials can improve the performance of their high-speed digital circuits. These RoHS-compliant, laminate and prepreg products exhibit minimal conductor and dielectric losses, helping circuit designers to achieve excellent signal-integrity (SI) performance in high-speed digital designs. Theta laminates feature a relative dielectric constant of 3.90 in the z-axis at 1 GHz, with a dissipation factor of only 0.009 at the same frequency. They deliver high reliability, thanks to a z-axis coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of only 50 ppm/°C, or about 30% lower than standard FR-4 circuit materials. This translates into improved reliability of plated through holes (PTHs), buried blind viaholes, and stacked viaholes in multilayer structures requiring multiple lamination cycles. With a high glass transition temperature (Tg), Theta materials are suitable for high-yield, lead-free processing.

FR-4 material provides the base standard for PCB substrates, delivering a widely effective balance between cost, manufacturability, electrical properties, durability and performance.

Dielectric Materials
A dielectric material is a substance that is a poor conductor of electricity, and used as an insulating layer in the PCB build up. Porcelain, mica, glass, plastics and some metal oxides are good dielectrics. The lower the dielectric loss, (the proportion of energy lost as heat) the more effective the dielectric material. If the voltage across a dielectric material becomes too great -- that is, if the electrostatic field becomes too intense -- the material will suddenly begin to conduct current. This phenomenon is called dielectric breakdown. Rogers 4350 is less likely to demonstrate a dielectric breakdown condition than FR-4. Gtek is better and only slightly more costly. If performance is important, use the traditional materials such as those from Rogers Corp.
