    Also quite early on, the possibility of having stories branching out into several different paths was suggested by Jorge Luis Borges in his short story "An Examination of the Work of Herbert Quain" (1941). This story features an author whose novel is a three-part story containing two branch points, and with nine possible endings.[8][9] Another story by Borges, titled "The Garden of Forking Paths" (1941), also describes a book with a maze-like narrative, which may have inspired the gamebook form.[9][10]

    In 1945, a book titled Treasure Hunt was published in Britain under the name of "Alan George" (probably a pseudonym). This book, which involves a group of children who have outdoor adventures, allows the reader to choose among several possible actions at the end of each story section. Treasure Hunt has been acknowledged as the first gamebook in the modern sense.[11]

    The Game recounts the incredible adventures of an everyday man who transforms himself from a shy, awkward writer into the quick-witted, smooth-talking Style, a character irresistible to women.

    But just when life is better than he could have ever dreamed (he uses his techniques on Britney Spears, receives life coaching from Tom Cruise, moves into a mansion with Courtney Love and is officially voted the World's Number One Pickup Artist) he falls head over heels for a woman who can beat him at his own game.

    Are you just another AFC ("average frustrated chump") trying to meet an HB ("hot babe")? How would you like to "full-close" with a Penthouse Pet of the Year? The answers, my friend, are in Neil Strauss's entertaining book The Game. Strauss was a self-described chick repellant--complete with large, bumpy nose, small, beady eyes, glasses, balding head, and, worst of all, painful shyness around women. He felt like "half a man." That is, until a book editor asked him to investigate the community of pickup artists. Strauss's life was transformed. He spent two years bedding some fine chiquitas and studying with some of the North America's most suave gents--including the best of them all, the God of the pickup "community," a man named Mystery.

    I’m not talking about the first time you sat down with a buddy and mashed buttons until you got tired and switched to Mario Kart — I’m talking about the time you looked at a fighting game and thought, “Darn it, I want to get good at this.” It probably took you a long time and a lot of hard work, especially if you didn’t have a group of people to play with regularly that were close to your skill level.

    Fighting games are beautiful. A good fighting game teaches you about your opponent; a great fighting game teaches you about yourself. But they’re very, very hard to learn — and rarely do we have someone who is willing to take the time out to teach us.

    Mystery is an aspiring Toronto magician who charges $2,250 for a weekend pickup workshop. He is not much to look at: a cross between a vampire and a computer geek. But by using high-powered marketing techniques he's turned seduction into an effortless craft--even inventing his own vocabulary. His technique sounds like a car salesman's tip sheet: his main rule is FMAC--find, meet, attract, close. He employs the "three-second rule"--always approach a woman within three seconds of first seeing her in order to avoid getting shy. Other tricks: Intrigue a beautiful woman by pretending to be unaffected by her charm; also, never hit on a woman right away. Start with a disarming, innocent remark, like "Do you think magic spells work?" or "Oh my god, did you see those two girls fighting outside?" And finally, the most important characteristic of the pickup artist--smile.

    After two years, Strauss ends up becoming almost as successful as Mystery, but he comes to an important realization. His techniques were actually off-putting to the woman he ended up falling in love with. And they never prepared him for actually having a relationship. After a while, he ran out of one-liners and had to have a real conversation. Still, The Game is a great read that may help some AFCs come out of their shells. --Alex Roslin

    Playing Final Fantasy VII today is different than it was 20 years ago. The worldbuilding and concepts that seemed to recede into the background when I played the game around release are, to my adult mind, the most prescient and horrifying. This is a game that is fundamentally about economic and environmental justice.

    The world of Final Fantasy VII is entirely dominated by corporations who have polluted the world to such an extent that humanity has become cloistered in corporate-controlled nightmare cities where they're bottled up to rot in slums beneath metal plates. Their entertainment is provided by a mega corporation that runs a theme park that contains all of the hopes, dreams, and physical activities denied the average person. The world is dying, and it is the fault of those in power.

A new book, out this month, describes these upheavals and the eventual inner peace the author found in domesticity. Strauss has titled his book The Truth, although for a while, he tells me, he thought he’d call it Game Over.

    There are very few games that have a major impact on the way that we think about all games. These games, when they appear, have a warping effect; their gravity is like a black hole, and they drag players and designers down in them so deeply that it takes years for games culture to claw its way back into some semblance of being that is outside comparison and contrast with that game. The Legend of Zelda, Call of Duty 4, World of Warcraft, Farmville, and Dark Souls all share the curse and honor of being so powerful that they drew all of games toward them.


    Final Fantasy VII is also one of these games. It might be the biggest one, the one that captured so many people for so long that many people seem to have forgotten why they became so enthralled to begin with, and there are a number of reasons for that attachment. One is that it was the first 3D entry is a well-loved and popular series. Another is that it appeared on the PlayStation surrounded by a large ad campaign that stressed its cinematic storytelling. Yet another might be the form of that story and how it artfully pulled together a number of strands of traditional Final Fantasy storytelling: a rag-tag team tries to save the world; a tragedy befalls them; there is an evil-behind-the-evil in front of us that is more horrible than we can possibly imagine.

    Bit of a change of pace here. In place of another video diary, I've pulled today a promotional video for Survivor.

    The artwork in the video is a combination of the E:D concept, and some images from NASA. The NASA artwork is quite spectacular, and added the holes that I needed for the video's "story", where I couldn't find ones suitable form the concept art.

    I felt like I had done something wrong," he told me recently over email. "That the world was viewing me as a criminal. I broke into tears. I thought to myself 'Why am I being punished for trying to live a normal life? Was I going to be sent back to Brazil? Am I not gonna be able to be somebody? Do I have anything in my life to look forward to?' I thought about it the entire time and didn't even care for the movie that we were watching."

    Everyone I talked to for this story had one thing in common: games. Sometimes video games, sometimes tabletop games. But what bound them together was a sense of being thrust into the shadows of society, forced to hide themselves, and finding solace, hope, and even careers in games. While they waited for the world to change, they embraced games.

    Lucas, understandably, feared there was no future for him. That changed in 2012, when former President Obama used executive authority to create the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA), which provided legal protection for a narrow but sympathetic portion of undocumented immigrants. Specifically, if you met certain requirements—came to the US under the age of 16; were younger than 31 years old, as of June 15, 2012; lived in the US since 2007—you could be granted a two-year grace period from immigration action. It meant you could safely apply for a job, go to college—all things Lucas figured had been taken away, thanks to a secret his parents had kept from him.

    The music is from a website called here, which has a smallish selection of free royalties free tracks. I've used 4 of them pulled together. Many thanks to Rickvanman for this music, as it fits what I wanted to do for the video perfectly.

    Watching my video back, there are some mistakes in it, both in terms of the technical side, and in the Elite references. I do apologise for these. However, also watching the video back I get goosebumps at 2:24. I hope you enjoy it!

    Adventure gamebooks, like the Fighting Fantasy and Choose Your Own Adventure series, were popular pastimes for children and young adults in the '80s and '90s, transporting readers into fantasy realms, pulp fiction scenarios and sci-fi universes. The genre is experiencing something of a mobile revival, with publishers such as Tin Man Games, Inkle and Choice of Games delivering everything from classic gamebook fun to more experimental interactive fiction apps that play around with the possibilities of the digital medium.     Programmed learning materials, first proposed by B.F. Skinner,[12] have been recognized as an early influence on the development of branching path books.[13] This learning method was first applied in the TutorText series of interactive textbooks, published from the late fifties up until the early seventies. These books present the reader with a series of problems related to a particular area of study, allowing him or her to choose among several possible answers. If the answer to a problem is correct, the reader moves on to the next problem. If the answer is incorrect, the reader is given feedback and is asked to pick a different answer. This educational technique would form a basis for many later narrative gamebook series .[14][12]

    All of these are familiar story tropes in video games and beyond. And yet, somehow, Final Fantasy VII's legacy has stuck with us much longer than many of the other 3D role-playing games for the original Playstation. It is talked about as a masterpiece, a timeless classic, and a game that needs to be remade more than 20 years later.

    The infinite conversation topic around Final Fantasy VII is its big turn in the middle: Aeris, the sweetheart maybe-love-interest who is the last on an ancient race of people connected to the earth in a primal way, is killed by super soldier/villain Sephiroth. It happens during a cutscene. It's as beautifully rendered as one could manage at the time. A character who the player has spent dozens of hours saving, helping, fighting battles with, leveling up, and talking to in longform conversations about environmental justice is dead.

    Hidden somewhere, in nearly every major city in the world, is an underground seduction lair. And in these lairs, men trade the most devastatingly effective techniques ever invented to charm women. This is not fiction. These men really exist. They live together in houses known as Projects. And Neil Strauss, the bestselling author, spent two years living among them, using the pseudonym Style to protect his real-life identity. The result is one of the most explosive and controversial books of the year -- guaranteed to change the lives of men and transform the way women understand the opposite sex forever.

    As humanity rose to its zenith and laid claim to the solar system, there were no celebrations, no cries of victory, no songs of conquest – there were only wry, sarcastic smirks and debates concerning how long it would take humanity to ruin the neighboring planets of the solar system.

    They felt no need to rush, for they had already won the war… Or so they thought.

    Gamebooks became popular in the 1980s- about the same time as the original Elite, in fact! Unlike a novel, where you start at the beginning of the book and read straight through to the end, gamebooks follow a non-linear path. At many points, the reader is asked to make a decision on how to progress. If the right decisions are taken, the book/gamebook/story/adventure continues to a successful conclusion- the hero (by convention, referred to as "you", since you are making the decisions) will win out against the odds, and you get the sense of satisfaction in having found the "solution" to the game. Make the wrong decisions, and the book will end early- normally with "you" suffering an untimely end, or some other form of failure.

    Most gamebooks introduce an element of chance, through the use of dice or coins, and require you to keep track of your hero's status and equipment. Survivor will be no different in this regard, except that instead of being in control of a sword-wielding warrior (by far the most common hero type), you will, instead, have a spaceship that you need to equip and fly.

    Though Rohit graduated, it would be another four years before DACA officially passed—Obama had just been sworn into office for his first term, and there was talk of passing broad immigration reform—and Rohit immediately slunk into a deep depression.

    Well, I kinda did! Been a casual all my life but by the time the first blazblue came out something in it made me decide to get serious. I could do simple stuff like input moves already but all that fundamental stuff one needs to know to compete and win money (which I now do with BB) I learned there. I did play sf4 vanilla but as soon as ct came out I dropped it. I tried ultra a bit recently and just from those airdasher fundamentals I could keep up. Links were still an issue but Gouken can do damage without em so it’s ok.

    Anyways, my point is, fine, teach sf fundamentals but why do you need a specidic sf4 chapter too? SF2 fundamentals apply! The time spent teaching sf4-specific stuff would be better spent teaching airdasher fundamentals instead. My main issue really is that the naming is not sincere, the goal is teaching SF over teaching fighters in general.

    These days, at 46, Strauss is different. Maybe not change-his-name-to-Clive different, but he’s a husband, and a father, and stupidly in love on both fronts. Whereas he once lived in a Hollywood man-mansion that (by his own account) often had used condoms floating in its jacuzzi, he now lives in relative domestic seclusion in Malibu. It used to be that Strauss arranged seminars for men on how to become better players. Now, he arranges seminars for them on how to become better men. The shiny suits are gone in favour of a Pacific-side uniform of surfer T, loose wristbands, espadrilles. He fits right in, this lazy afternoon, with the crowd hanging around outside a Malibu coffee shop.

    While waiting for his drink, Strauss falls into conversation with a group that includes two middle-aged tourists and a young woman. The woman is in her 20s – tanned, blond, wearing denim short-shorts. Game-klaxon! I watch to see how Strauss will react to her, only he doesn’t. He chats with the tourists, about nothing much. Then he chats with her, about nothing much. And then he walks away.

    For the benefit of those who cannot tell a Wyvern from a Womp Rat, I had better explain. Gamebooks were typically fantasy and science and fiction romps in which the reader controlled the narrative. A book was usually divided into hundreds of numbered paragraphs. You started at “one”, then flipped back and forth according to your decisions.

    So to scurry up that corridor reeking of sweaty hobgoblin, you flicked to paragraph 50. To venture east, towards the growling dragon noise, you went to number 75. And so on until you had rescued the missing dwarves or were beheaded by trolls (growling monsters under bridges rather than growling 15-year-olds on 4chan).

    With their swerving plots and fantastical settings, these books were insanely gripping – especially if you were a kid who could become invested in rescuing dwarves from non-4chan surfing trolls. I vividly remember devouring a gamebook as a 10-year-old, so torn over an apparently life-or-death decision I had to put the volume down and pace my grandmother’s kitchen. In the end I opted to attack the centaur rather than accompany the creature to its village. I met a sticky end, involving an angry horse-man and a pointy stick. It’s possible I’m scarred to this day.

    For Jackson and Livingston this was a distinctly mixed blessing. On one hand, they were vindicated in their belief that there was a market for fantasy adventures placing the reader at the heart of the excitement. On the other, Puffin needed a sequel and gave the duo a deadline of two months. Jackson duly locked himself away and, in five weeks cranked out Citadel of Chaos. It was darker and more punishing than Warlock. No surprise, given Jackson apparently went to hell and back writing it.

    Soon other publishers were getting into the gamebook business. To stay ahead, Puffin required Jackson, Livingston and their stable of hired writers (which, confusingly, came to include a Texan games designer named… Steve Jackson) to put out a new book every month. By the time the series wound down in (not uncoincidentally, the year the Playstation console debuted), 59 had been published, not counting spin-offs and and volumes of source material. These ran the gamut of genres, from fantasy and science fiction to post-apocalyptic and horror. Not all were classics – but even the worst offered a few hours of thrilling distraction.

    What is it about Final Fantasy VII that makes people want to change the past? Do they love Aeris? Is it the trauma of that all of that sunk cost, the battle time and the experience and the conversations, is gone forever? Is it the reality that the developers of Final Fantasy VII shattered the illusion that this game was all about the player and their desires? It's impossible to really know.

    I thought it was a completely cruel decision, made aimlessly and without purpose," he said. "The decision is still aimless. As a previously undocumented person, I know exactly how it feels to be stripped of basic opportunities needed to live. Tell me how you would live your life if you couldn't work and couldn't drive to work with consistency?     Herrera's family came to the US in 1999, before 9/11 and the increasingly strict security measures that came with it made immigration even more difficult. At that time, it was easy for them to acquire travel visas—all they did was wait in line.

    On a travel visa, you can only stay in the country for a limited amount of time. Herrera's family decided to stay past that timeline, violating their visa. Fortunately for them, there's an easier path to become legal when the system has already, in some way, vetted you.

    Contrary to other folks I spoke with, Herrera knew about his status from an early age. His parents were upfront about their situation because it gave him a framework to understand why they lived in a bad part of town, why his parents couldn't always be there for his sports games (they had to work), and why, when he got older, things might get harder for him.

    Wanting to make things different than they were isn't surprising. Wanting to assert control on a fictional world when so much in our real world seems to be out of anyone's control makes a lot of sense to me. If the legacy of Final Fantasy VII has been one of dealing with the tragedy and emotional rawness of losing someone, and then finding grand meaning in that, then maybe it's time for us to shift perspectives.

    This was not so easily done. After its release in 2005, The Game spent a month on the New York Times’ bestseller list. Two years later, and with apparent reluctance, Strauss published a sequel. (First sentence: “I didn’t want to write this book.”) He attended conferences and signings. He endorsed a Game board game. He kept on spending, by his reckoning, “thousands of hours, thousands of dollars” in bars – preying. It was a lifestyle, Strauss says, that fast became “a recipe for self-hatred”.

    Around 2010, he met and fell in love with a Mexican-born model named Ingrid De La O. She was perfect, Strauss thought, their relationship together “the best I’d ever had”. Yet he found he couldn’t stop pursuing other women and cheating on Ingrid. When she learned about the cruellest of his infidelities (her best friend, a church car park), Ingrid agreed to forgive Strauss only on the condition he be treated for sex addiction. So he entered rehab for three months. Here his problems really began.

    Clive-marked coffee in hand, Strauss leaves the cafe and heads for home, which is a large, white-walled villa on a hill. Just inside the front door there’s a piled-up wetsuit, left where it fell after his morning surf. On a shelf near his study, Strauss keeps a framed letter that was sent to him by Phil Collins, the pop star writing to tell the journalist to fuck off, after a negative write-up in Rolling Stone. The villa has an easy, dishevelled feel to it – baby-rearing equipment in the kitchen, circle of dog poo untended on the patio – but it’s still a grand and imposing place.

    Strauss is trying to do something about this. Even a decade later, he has found he still has Game readers who look to him expectantly. They follow him on social media, subscribe to his mailing list. “I was just a music writer. Then I did a book about, like, how I learned not to be lonely and get out of friend-zone with girls. And suddenly men wanted to learn from me, which I hadn’t anticipated. I think a lot of those people who started to listen to me wanted instruction, advice – life guidance.”

    The House The Game Built, I suggest. Strauss chuckles awkwardly. He says he’s had other books that have sold well, too. Biographies of rock bands, porn stars, CEOs. “We take these short cuts in our culture,” he says. “We get one piece of information about people and we just assume it’s them for the rest of their lives. It seems like we don’t allow for the possibility of change. But, I mean, we only learn from our mistakes, right?” Is that a word he’d use now for The Game – a mistake?

    Fighting Fantasy inculcated in me a lifelong love of reading and a lifelong hatred of orcs guarding chests of gold. I’m not alone. A recent “crowd funding” campaign for a board game inspired by gamebooks has raised euro $1.2 million. In Seventh Continent the player negotiates a haunted island via a series of thrilling adventures. Dice are rolled, monsters are battled, a horrifically good time is had by all.

    When I was a kid, I devoured the Choose Your Own Adventure series, checking out every book I could find in the library and reading them exhaustively–I wasn’t done until I’d tried every choice available. If you’ve somehow avoided exposure to these things, they were ingeniously designed children’s books that played with non-linearity: you’d typically start on page 1, as is the custom, and maybe the story would continue in a linear fashion for another page or two. Before long, though, the reader (usually inserted into the story as protagonist via the second person pronoun and a careful avoidance of gender-specific descriptors) would encounter a choice:

    I’m in for €89. The completed game is due later this year. I can’t wait. To experience just a sliver of the tension I felt walking around my grandmother’s kitchen debating whether or not to befriend that centaur would be a prize for the ages.

On a recent weekend I downloaded Temple of the Spider God and stayed up until 2am finishing it (actually, I stayed up until 2am for Game of Thrones, but Temple of the Spider God helped pass the time).

    The ECYC Game Book is a compilation of different kinds of grouping games that have been divided into five categories in order to make your work easier. The games come from all over Europe and in addition to the game instructions; you will also find some tips on how, when and with whom to use these games.

    Choices: And The Sun Went Out is an interesting change in Tin Man Games' usual gamebook format. Instead of delivering a complete interactive story in a single package that you can read through in one go, Choices presents its content in an episodic format, with new content unlocked every week. It's also a free app, with players getting a limited number of "choice tokens" to make choices in the story; players can also subscribe to the app to get unlimited choices for their playthrough. The first story is an adventure tale in a near future world where the sun mysteriously vanishes and reappears. Readers must investigate the mystery surrounding the disappearing sun and the murders of scientists studying the phenomenon. The first story arc has already been completed, and Tin Man Games is turning the Choices app into a hub for more episodic content, with a new story arriving in fal

    One argument I saw from a number of people, including readers who work in design, is that graphic designers draw from a wide range of references and might not know exactly what the elements they're working with are meant to connote in context. Bungie claims this is what happened here: "Graphic designers routinely reference real world art, iconography, typeface, and other design elements to inform the choices they make. In this case, some of the reference imagery featured the simple mirrored chevron shapes found in the finished piece."

    It's not clear whether the Kekistan flag logo was the specific reference used here, and as Bungie point out, chevrons are one of the symbols on the hunter class. On the other hand, the gauntlet, as it appears in the game, didn't just have mirrored chevrons, but echoed numerous other elements of the same symbol white supremacists use. The default coloration and the central design element also seemed to nod in that direction. Bungie left their explanation of the armor's origins at, "We draw from a lot of sources."

    During the sixties, authors from several different countries started experimenting with fiction that contained multiple paths and/or endings. Some literary works in this vein include the French-language novel L'ironie du sort ) by Paul Guimard, the Spanish-language novels Hopscotch by Julio Cortazar and Juego de cartas by Max Aub, and the works of the French literary group known as the Oulipo .[15][16][17][18] Other early experiments include the short stories "Alien Territory" and "The Lost Nose: a Programmed Adventure" (both by John Sladek, the novel The French Lieutenant's Woman by John Fowles, and the collection of short stories titled Tante storie per giocare (Many Tales to Play With, by Italian author Gianni Rodari.[19][20][21]

    Plots in gamebooks tend to be rather lighter than plots in a novel- as much of the book is taken up by the "game", and the different options available to you, the reader. However, the plot for Survivor- without wanting to give away too many spoilers- will be as follows:

    From that point forward, page numbers as we know them would cease to exist, acting instead as catalog numbers for the continually branching plot. There was usually one path through the story to reach the “good” ending, with all other paths terminating in the protagonist being killed or trapped forever in some unendurable circumstance. I clearly remember working methodically through The Cave of Time, the first and most famous of the series, using up to 8 of my fingers at any one time as bookmarks so that I could return directly to decision points and explore the alternate branches (I still needed my thumbs to flip the page, though I could do it with my chin or nose if necessary). I’d estimate I saw about 10%-20% of the over 200 CYOA books published over a 20-year span, (plus a few derivatives from other publishers, such as R.L. Stine’s The Deadly Experiments of Dr. Eeek). One prevalent but puzzling feature of these books was their lack of internal consistency: in Dr. Eeek, for example, the titular doctor is a chimpanzee who has staged a Planet of the Apes-like coup; in others, he’s just a human who can’t remember to pay the electric bill.

The mechanics of the game need to be playable and enjoyable; the plot needs to be engaging; the adventure need to be sufficiently difficult to prodivde a challenge, but not so difficult so as to make the reader give up in frustration. An element of chance is needed; but not too much that it becomes the deciding factor on a successful win/loss in the game. Balancing these elements will require the help of the Elite: Dangerous community (and in particular the backers of this Kickstarter). In order to make this a success, I have included the "Prologue" adventure, where backers can test out the mechanics of the book long before it is actually completed.

A. Montgomery.

Another example of Choice of Games' rich selection of content, Sixth Grade Detective does away with superpowered conflict and adult themes for a more grounded story about coming of age, friendship, petty crime and cheeky sixth grade consulting detectives.

    Tabletop role-playing games such as Dungeons and Dragons were another early influence that would contribute in major ways to the development of the gamebook form. The first module which combined a branching-path narrative with a set of role-playing game rules was Buffalo Castle for the Tunnels and Trolls system . Buffalo Castle was innovative for its time, as it allowed the reader to experience a role-playing session without need for a referee. It has been followed by many other solitaire adventures for the T&T system, as well as solos for other tabletop role-playing games.
