    Newer television receivers greatly reduced the need for external set-top boxes, although cable converter boxes continue to be used to descramble premium cable channels according to carrier-controlled access restrictions, and to receive digital cable channels, along with using interactive services like video on demand, pay per view, and home shopping through television.

    Closed captioning box[edit]
    Set-top boxes were also made to enable closed captioning on older sets in North America, before this became a mandated inclusion in new TV sets. Some have also been produced to mute the audio (or replace it with noise) when profanity is detected in the captioning, where the offensive word is also blocked. Some also include a V-chip that allows only programs of some television content ratings. A function that limits children's time watching TV or playing video games may also be built in, though some of these work on main electricity rather than the video signal.

    Digital television adapter[edit]

    The transition to digital terrestrial television after the turn of the millennium left many existing television receivers unable to tune and display the new signal directly. In the United States, where analog shutdown was completed in 2009 for full-service broadcasters, a federal subsidy was offered for coupon-eligible converter boxes with deliberately limited capability which would restore signals lost to digital transition.

    Professional set-top box[edit]

    Professional set-top boxes are referred to as IRDs or integrated receiver/decoders in the professional broadcast audio/video industry. They are designed for more robust field handling and rack mounting environments. IRDs are capable of outputting uncompressed serial digital interface signals, unlike consumer STBs which usually don't, mostly because of copyright reasons.

    Apple TV: Easy to Use, Perfect for Apple Users


    The $99 Apple TV is a tiny little device that fits anywhere in your living room. The remote is very basic, but extremely easy to use—something a lot of living room remotes lack these days. It feels very solid, and the buttons respond nicely, making the whole product pleasant to use. Setup is a snap: just plug it in, link it up with your iTunes library and Apple ID, and you're ready to go. Typing in your credentials is kind of annoying due to the lack of keyboard. I wish I could set up things like Netflix and Hulu in iTunes from my computer, but for now you'll have to trudge through the remote-driven setup.

    The interface is great. It's fast, smooth, and incredibly simple. You have all your basic channels on the front page in a grid, letting you access your movies, TV shows, and music from iTunes, as well as streaming channels like Netflix, Hulu Plus, and sports sites like MLB.tv, NBA, and NHL. It even has a list of recent and popular movies along the top if you aren't sure what you want to watch, which is kind of fun. Anything else you want to play can be shot to the Apple TV through AirPlay on an iOS device, or via AirPlay mirroring on a Mac. It isn't ideal, but it'll get the job done for just about anything you want to watch.


    Unfortunately, beyond that, its streaming abilities are limited. The Apple TV was really built around iTunes, which means you need to buy and download your content from the iTunes store. On one hand, iTunes' selection is amazing. You have tons of movies and TV shows at your fingertips, to rent or to buy. On the other hand, it can get expensive quickly. HD movies cost $15-20, while a full season of a TV show ranges from $40-50 on average. Watch more than a few movies or shows, and the iTunes store becomes much more expensive than $10 a month for Netflix or Hulu Plus. Sure, you "own" those movies, but they all have heavy DRM and are only watchable on Apple devices...so let's be honest, you don't really own them.

    Hybrid set-top boxes, such as those used for Smart TV programming, enable viewers to access multiple TV delivery methods (including terrestrial, cable, internet, and satellite); like IPTV boxes, they include video on demand, time-shifting TV, Internet applications, video telephony, surveillance, gaming, shopping, TV-centric electronic program guides, and e-government. By integrating varying delivery streams, hybrids (sometimes known as "TV-centric"[1]) enable pay-TV operators more flexible application deployment, manufacturing PCB assembly which decreases the cost of launching new services, increases speed to market, and limits disruption for consumers.[2]

    As examples, Hybrid Broadcast Broadband TV (HbbTV) set-top boxes allow traditional TV broadcasts, whether from terrestrial (DTT), satellite, or cable providers, to be brought together with video delivered over the Internet and personal multimedia content. Advanced Digital Broadcast (ADB) launched its first hybrid DTT/IPTV set-top box in 2005,[3] which provided Telefónica with the digital TV platform for its Movistar TV service by the end of that year.[4] In 2009, ADB provided Europe's first three-way hybrid digital TV platform to Polish digital satellite operator n, which enables subscribers to view integrated content whether delivered via satellite, terrestrial, or internet.[5]

    UK based Inview Technology has over 8M STBs deployed in the UK for Teletext and an original push VOD service for Top Up TV.

    IPTV receiver[edit]
    In IPTV networks, the set-top box is a small computer providing two-way manufacturing PCB assembly communications on an IP network and decoding the video streaming media. IP set-top boxes have a built-in home network interface that can be Ethernet, Wireless (802.11 g,n,ac), or one of the existing wire home networking technologies such as HomePNA or the ITU-T G.hn standard, which provides a way to create a high-speed (up to 1Gbit/s) local area network using existing home wiring (power lines, phone lines, and coaxial cables).[6]

    In the US and Europe, telephone companies use IPTV (often on ADSL or optical fiber networks) as a means to compete with traditional local cable television monopolies.

    This type of service is distinct from Internet television, which involves third-party content over the public Internet not controlled by the local system operator.

    Programming features[edit]
    Electronic program guide[edit]
    Electronic program guides and interactive program guides provide users of television, radio, and other media applications with continuously updated menus displaying broadcast programming or scheduling information for current and upcoming programming. Some guides, such as ITV, also feature backward scrolling to promote their catch-up content.[7]

    Favorites[edit]
    This feature allows the user to choose preferred channels, making them easier and quicker to access; this is handy with the wide range of digital channels on offer. The concept of favourite channels is superficially similar to that of the "bookmark" function offered in many Web browsers.

    Timer[edit]
    The timer allows the user to program and enable the box to switch between channels at certain times: this is handy to record from more than one channel while the user is out. The user still needs to program the VCR or DVD recorder.

    We included our custom-built XBMC media center—not everyone's taste, but a geekier option we love—for a bit of extra comparison (Note: since the writing of this article, streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon have gotten much more difficult in XBMC. See this post for more information). Obviously, you can't boil down five devices into just a small chart, though. So, we played with each of these five devices over the course of a few weeks, and here are our thoughts on each one: what it does well, what it lacks, and who it's good for.

    The Apple TV definitely seems like the most polished of the bunch, and the easiest to use for most people. It's great for users who have a lot of other Apple products, and prefer buying and downloading content to subscribing and streaming content (and have the wallet to support that preference).

    Google TV: A Little Clunky, But Highly Configurable


    Google TV is, quite literally, the Android of streaming boxes. It's available on a number of different devices from different manufacturers, in different price ranges, and with different remotes. As such, we can't talk too much about the hardware here (though the VIZIO Co-Star, shown at the right, is a great looking model available for preorder now). The software, however, is very reminiscent of an Android tablet...because that's exactly what it is. You have a wall of icons representing your media, live TV, apps like Netflix and Amazon, and others. You can download Google TV-optimized Android apps from the Google Play store and put them on your home screen.

    Unfortunately, its similarities to Android do it more harm than good. Some apps are clearly ports of tablet apps that don't work very well with a remote, and you'll need to control them with the clunky trackpad or control stick on your remote. Sometimes you'll only need to do this for certain actions, like seeing a movie's info, but in some cases—like with Amazon's absolutely horrendous streaming "app" (which is really just a shortcut to the Amazon Prime web site)—you'll need to use the mouse for everything, which is really not an enjoyable experience. It also has the quirks we've come to know on Android phones, like the occasional force quit or popup confirming a security certificate (which isn't a huge pain, but something regular users will find confusing). All in all, it feels like you're using a computer from your couch, not a set-top box.


    All that said, Google TV does have a feature that is—in my opinion—the Holy Grail feature of set-top boxes: universal search. If you enter the TV & Movies app and search for a TV show, it'll show you a list of seasons and episodes. Select an episode and it'll show you which services it's available on (like Netflix, Amazon, and YouTube). You can then decide from there which service you want to use to watch it. It's a lot nicer than having to search each library separately for that show that's harder to find. Every device should implement this, and I really hope Google expands it to include other apps in the future.

    Lastly, Google TV's streaming services are pretty good, since it has most of the Google Play store at its disposal. You can watch Netflix, Amazon (however crappily), and some sports channels, but a lot of content is missing—like Hulu and other TV channels. It does, however, have the movies and TV section of Google Play, which like iTunes lets you download and rent videos to your TV. Prices are comparable for movies, costing about $15-20 to buy, with a pretty good selection. Shows are cheaper at $20-$40 per season, but the selection leaves a lot to be desired. That said, other apps like the Chrome web browser, the occasional video game, or the awesome Plex media center make Google TV a bit more appealing.

    List of Google TV Streaming Channels

    A set-top box goes a long way toward obviating the need for an expensive cable account, but it's not quite there. There's a $49 add-on to the Boxee Box called the Boxee Live TV that gets a little closer, though — it lets you connect an antenna or a coaxial cable to your Boxee Box, and start watching whatever channels are available to you over the air. Typically those channels include the broadcast networks (Fox, ABC, CBS, and NBC), along with a lot of public access and foreign-language channels, and a smattering of others depending on where you're located. It's a great feature, one that makes it possible to channel-surf even without cable — though you'll definitely still miss some of the advanced features like DVR.

    There are a handful of standalone devices that do something similar, like the Elgato EyeTV Hybrid or EyeTV Home Run, both of which can also plug into a set-top box and capture streaming content onto your hard drive, but those don't usually include the streaming services. Google TV supports a lot of cable boxes and DVRs, and is trying to basically be the new interface for your live TV in addition to everything else, though you'll need an existing cable connection. If you're looking to cut the cord but don't want to completely let go of live TV watching, these are your best options.



    STORAGE
    If you're just interested in streaming, you may not need any storage, but if you've built up a library of music and movies over the years you might want a device that can store and play those files too. If you're in the latter camp, buying a set-top box with internal storage has a bunch of benefits: you can throw all your own stuff onto the device, and watch it all on its rightful screen — your TV. It also gets huge movie files off your computer, and onto the typically cheaper (and less likely to be dropped and broken) drives inside a set-top box. The Western Digital WD TV Live Hub or Seagate GoFlex TV give you 1TB or more of local storage, if you want a hard drive inside; if you've already got an external drive, make sure you get a set-top box with a couple of USB ports, like the Roku 2 XS or the Boxee Box.

    WIRELESS / DLNA
    If you have an iOS device, it's hard to beat the AirPlay's ease of use. It's popularity showed how great wireless playback could be when properly implemented. Of course, if you own an iPhone or iPad, an Apple TV becomes a perfect conduit for sending photos, videos, and songs straight to your TV, if you're not invested in Apple's ecosystem you should look into replicating some of those features with DLNA. DLNA is a nightmare of compatibility and manufacturer implementations, but when it works well it nicely replicates a lot of the best features of AirPlay. DLNA lets you access files from one device on another — so you can grab files off your computer, for instance, and then send them to your TV — and makes it easy to connect all your devices. AirPlay is certainly the easiest and most elegant solution, but you can get wireless capabilities out of a handful of Blu-ray players and set-top boxes as well.

    In a perfect world, all your devices — your phone, your TV, your tablet — would play nicely together. Our world’s not perfect, but if you’re smart about it, you can engineer it so that your phone can control your TV, or at least work with it. Apple’s devices are the classic example: you can download the Remote app and use your iOS device to control your Apple TV, or you can use manufacturing PCB assembly AirPlay to send all kinds of content from your hand to your TV. Samsung devices offer a similar, slightly messier system using DLNA, and if you buy one of the Galaxy Tabs with an IR blaster inside, you can use the Peel app to control your whole home theater stack. Roku has remote-control apps for iOS and Android, and Western Digital lets you control your box with your smartphone as well.

    This is the best-case scenario. If you have this option, you'll be able to get the native resolution of the channel sent to your TV.

    Pros: The scaler/deinterlacer in your TV is far better than what's in your manufacturing PCB assembly cable/satellite box, so this option will get you the best picture quality.

    Cons: Not all cable/satellite boxes offer native resolution as an option. Also, there could be a delay in changing between 720p and 1080i channels as your TV adjusts to the new resolution.

    Cisco – Wurl broadband channels can be accessed through Cisco’s Snowflake guide for Multichannel Video Program Distributors (MVPDs).
    Espial – Wurl broadband channels are manufacturing PCB assembly integrated into the program guide delivered to cable operators’ set-top boxes through Espial’s G4 platform and in its Moxi viewers’ guide.

    Gaming. On your TV. Novel, right? Well, if you want to play games in addition to everything else on your set-top box, there are a couple of great options. First and foremost are obviously the Wii, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3, which are industry-leading game consoles that are rapidly adding set-top box-like features. If you're only going to add one box to your home theater stack, those three are great places to start.

    If you want streaming first, gaming second, you've still got some options, though the games you'll encounter are little more than fun gimmicks. The service to which the set-top box is attached may be through a telephone line as, for example, with WebTV, or through a cable TV company like TCI.

    In the DTV realm, a typical digital set-top box contains one or more microprocessors for running the operating system, possibly Linux or Windows CE, and for parsing the MPEG transport stream.     If you have a 720p TV, it's possible that setting your cable/satellite box to 720p might be a better option. The deciding factor is how well your box deinterlaces and downconverts 1080i content.     Cons: All 1080i channels will be deinterlaced and downconverted by your cable box.

    Generally put, to provide interactive services, the set-top box might need some or all of the below:

    (1) A network that offers the potential for interactivity.
    (2) The network interface - This connects the STB to a network which makes it possible to communicate with the servers.
    (3) A tuner is electronics that 'catch' the incoming signal.
    (4) The decoder - In order to save storage space, disk bandwidth, and network bandwidth, programming is usually encoded (compressed) before being sent over the network to the STB. Thus, the end-user (subscriber) needs a decoder to decode (uncompress among other things) the incoming stream's data before it can be viewable on the TV. This is part of what a modem does. The decoding process may be known as (or include) Demodulation (Heavy Lifting.) It could include Demultiplexing. Also see Codec. H.264 (MPEG-4) compression technology utilizes up to 40 percent less network manufacturing PCB assembly bandwidth than the MPEG-2 compression used in most systems to date.
    (5) The buffer - Due to delay jitters in the network, the exact arrival time of a video stream often cannot be determined.
