Layer 3 switching is solely based on (destination) IP address stored in the header of IP datagram (see layer 4 switching later on this page for the difference). The difference between a layer 3 switch and a router is the way the device is making the routing decision. Traditionally, routers use microprocessors to make forwarding decisions in software, while the switch performs only hardware-based packet switching (by specialized ASIC with the help of content-addressable memory).[2] However, some traditional routers can have advanced hardware functions as well in some of the higher-end models.

The main advantage of layer 3 switches is the potential for lower network latency as a packet can be routed without making extra network hops to a router. For example, connecting two distinct segments (e.g. VLANs) with a router to a standard layer 2 switch requires passing the frame to the switch (first L2 hop), then to the router (second L2 hop) where the packet inside the frame is routed (L3 hop) and then passed back to the switch (third L2 hop). A layer 3 switch accomplishes the same task without the need for a router (and therefore additional hops) by making the routing decision itself, i.e. the packet is routed to another subnet and switched to the destination network port simultaneously.

Because many layer 3 switches offer the same functionality as traditional routers they can be used as cheaper, lower latency replacements in some networks. Layer 3 switches can perform the following actions that can also be performed by routers:

determine paths based on logical addressing
run layer 3 checksums (on header only)
use Time to Live (TTL)
process and respond to any option information
update Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) managers with Management Information Base (MIB) information
provide Security
The benefits of layer 3 switching include the following:

ny frame originating from the DUT/SUT (spanning tree, SNMP, RIP,
...) MUST not be counted as a received frame. Frames originating
from the DUT/SUT MAY be counted as flooded frames or not counted at
all.

Frame loss rate of the DUT/SUT SHOULD be reported as defined in
section 26.3 [3] with the following notes: Frame loss rate SHOULD be
measured at the end of the trail duration. The term "rate", for this
measurement only, does not imply the units in the fashion of "per
second."

LAN ports: A home router usually has four LAN ports, meaning that, straight out of the box, it can host a network of up to four wired networking devices. If you want to have a larger network, you will need to resort to a switch (or a hub), which adds more LAN ports to the router. Generally a home router can connect up to about 250 networking devices, and the majority of homes and even small businesses don't need more than that.

There are currently two main speed standards for LAN ports: Ethernet (also called Fast Ethernet,) which caps at 100 megabits per second (or about 13 megabytes per second), and Gigabit Ethernet, which caps at 1 gigabit per second (or about 150 MBps). In other words, it takes about a minute to transfer a CD's worth of data (around 700 MB or about 250 digital songs) over an Ethernet connection. With Gigabit Ethernet, the same job takes about five seconds. In real life, the average speed of an Ethernet connection is about 8 MBps, and of a Gigabit Ethernet connection is somewhere between 45 and 100 MBps. The actual speed of a network connection depends on many factors, such as the end devices being used, the quality of the cable and the amount of traffic.

5.1.4.1 Throughput

Throughput measurement is defined in section 26.1 [3]. A search
algorithm is employed to find the maximum Oload [2] with a zero Frame
loss rate [1]. The algorithm MUST adjust Iload to find the
throughput.

5.1.4.2 Forwarding Rate

Forwarding rate (FR) of the DUT/SUT SHOULD be reported as the number
of test frames per second that the device is observed to successfully
forward to the correct destination interface in response to a
specified Oload. The Oload MUST also be cited.

Forwarding rate at maximum offered load (FRMOL) MUST be reported as
the number of test frames per second that a device can successfully
transmit to the correct destination interface in response to the MOL
as defined in section 3.6 [2]. The MOL MUST also be cited.

Maximum forwarding rate (MFR) MUST be reported as the highest
forwarding rate of a DUT/SUT taken from an iterative set of
forwarding rate measurements. The iterative set of forwarding rate
measurements are made by adjusting Iload. The Oload applied to the
device MUST also be cited.

5.1.5 Reporting format

The results for these tests SHOULD be reported in the form of a
graph. The x coordinate SHOULD be the frame size, the y coordinate
SHOULD be the test results. There SHOULD be at least two lines on
the graph, one plotting the theoretical and one plotting the test
results.

To measure the DUT/SUT's ability to switch traffic while performing
many different address lookups, the number of addresses per port MAY
be increased in a series of tests.

for e.g Location A switch is connected with 25 clients (via sub switch) and Location B switch has 40 clients.

Port#8 on switch A is connected to Port#6 on Switch B via Cat6 cable. Both are on same subnet and LAN.

So 25 clients on Location A are able to communicate other 40 clients at Location B (vice versa)

I want to authenticate connection between these two switches. Means Port#8 on "switch A" will always check if other side switch is whitelisted or not.

Rule of thumb: The speed of a single network connection is determined by the slowest speed of any party involved.

For example, in order to have a wired Gigabit Ethernet connection between two computers, both computers, the router they are connected to and the cables used to link them together all need to support Gigabit Ethernet (or a faster standard). If you plug a Gigabit Ethernet device and an regular Ethernet device into a router, the connection between the two will be capped at the speed of Ethernet, which is 100 Mbps.

In short, LAN ports on a router allow Ethernet-ready devices to connect to one another and share data.

In order for them to also access the internet, the router needs to have a Wide Area Network (WAN) port. On many routers, this port may also be labeled the internet port.

Switch vs. hub: A hub and a switch both add more LAN ports to an existing network. They help increase the number of Ethernet-ready clients that a network can host. The main difference between hubs and switches is a hub uses one shared channel for all of its ports, while a switch has a dedicated channel for each one. This means the more clients you connect to a hub, the slower the data rate gets for each client, whereas with a switch the speed doesn't change according to the number of connected clients. For this reason, hubs are much cheaper than switches with the same number of ports.

However, hubs are largely obsolete now, since the cost of switches has come down significantly. The price of a switch generally varies based on its standard (regular Ethernet or Gigabit Ethernet, with the latter being more expensive), and the number of ports (the more ports, the higher the price).

You can find a switch with just four or up to 48 ports (or even more). Note that the total of extra wired clients you can add to a network is equal to the switch's total number of ports minus one. For example, a four-port switch will add another three clients to the network. This is because you need to use one of the ports to connect the switch itself to the network, which, by the way, also uses another port of the existing network. With this in mind, make sure you buy a switch with significantly more ports than the number of clients you intend to add to the network.

Wide-area network (WAN) port: Also known as the internet port. Generally, a router has just one WAN port. (Some business routers come with dual WAN ports, so one can use two separate internet services at a time.) On any router, the WAN port will be separated from the LAN ports, and is often distinguished by being a different color. A WAN port is used to connect to an internet source, such as a broadband modem. The WAN allows the router to connect to the internet and share that connection with all the Ethernet-ready devices connected to it.

The PI3L500-A is a 8-Channel 2:1 multiplexer/demultiplexer LAN Switch with Hi-Z outputs. Industry leading advantages include a propagation delay of less than 250ps, resulting from its low channel resistance and I/O capacitance. The device multiplexes differential outputs from a Gigabit Ethernet transceiver (PHY) device to one of two corresponding B1 or B2 outputs. The switch is bidirectional and offers little or no attenuation of the high-speed signals at the outputs. It is designed for low bit-to-bit skew, high channel-tochannel noise isolation and is compatible with various standards, such as 10/100/1000 Base-T (Ethernet). Generally, this part can be used to replace mechanical relays in low-voltage LAN applications that interface a physical layer over CAT 5 or CAT 6 unshielded twisted pair cable through an isolation transformer.

The switching algorithm is relatively simple and is the same for most of the routed protocols: a host would like to send a packet to a host on another network. Having acquired a router's address by some means, the source host sends the packet directly to that router's physical (MAC) address. To understand basic networking, you first need to answer the question, "What is a network switch?"

Each serves as a central connection for all of your network equipment and handles a data type known as frames. Frames carry your data. When a frame is received, it is amplified and then transmitted on to the port of the destination PC. The big difference between these two devices is in the method in which frames are being delivered.

In a hub, a frame is passed along or "broadcast" to every one of its ports. It doesn't matter that the frame is only destined for one port. The hub has no way of distinguishing which port a frame should be sent to. Passing it along to every port ensures that it will reach its intended destination. This places a lot of traffic on the network and can lead to poor network response times.

Additionally, a 10/100Mbps hub must share its bandwidth with each and every one of its ports. So when only one PC is broadcasting, it will have access to the maximum available bandwidth. If, however, multiple PCs are broadcasting, then that bandwidth will need to be divided among all of those systems, which will degrade performance.

A switch, however, keeps a record of the MAC addresses of all the devices connected to it. With this information, a switch can identify which system is sitting on which port. So when a frame is received, it knows exactly which port to send it to, without significantly increasing network response times. And, unlike a hub, a 10/100Mbps switch will allocate a full 10/100Mbps to each of its ports. So regardless of the number of PCs transmitting, users will always have access to the maximum amount of bandwidth. It's for these reasons a switch is considered to be a much better choice than a hub.
Routers are Completely Different Devices
Routers are completely different devices. Where a hub or switch is concerned with transmitting frames, a router's job, as its name implies, is to route packets to other networks until that packet ultimately reaches its destination. One of the key features of a packet is that it not only contains data, but the destination address of where it's going.

Every Ethernet device and port has its own unique 16-digit hexadecimal address. The switch maintains a database of MAC addresses and ports where the MAC addresses were last seen. This is known as a forwarding table. And unlike a network hub that simply duplicates data and broadcasts all frames out of every port, switches maintain their bridge forwarding tables, which makes the forwarding of frames far more efficient.

Let's discuss the forwarding table in a bit more detail. In the Cisco world, the bridge forwarding table is called a CAM table, for content addressable memory. If a switch receives an Ethernet frame for a destination that it doesn't have in its table, it floods that frame out to all ports -- like a hub does all the time.

Understanding how much throughput your network is likely to need -- today and several years into the future -- is a critical part of the purchasing process. Lower-cost access switches provide port density, but compared with switches designed for distribution and core switching duties, their maximum throughput specs are going to be considerably lower.

Switching performance also depends heavily on whether the switch will be operating at Layer 2, Layer 3 or both. And if the switch will be performing Layer 3 functions, it must be able to support the routing protocol that will be used. For example, almost all enterprise-grade multilayer switches can operate using static routes or open dynamic routing protocols, such as Open Shortest Path First. But if you need to run more advanced routing protocols, such as Border Gateway Protocol, or proprietary protocols, such as the Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol, you must ensure the switch you choose can run the necessary routing protocols.

How is it possible to Authenticate "Switch B" on "Switch A" (LAN)

So I have this problem for a year now, I can't find a solution.

I have ROOM A, there is my main router. ROOM B is my study room. And there is ROOM C which is empty right now.

So I have a wall socket in every room, with 2 connectors. So every room has direct Cat 6A connection to both other rooms. It is like a triangle.

I want to connect my Desktop PC from ROOM B to my router in ROOM A.

CASE 1: The Ethernet cable from the rooter is connected to the wall socket in ROOM A. In ROOM B the PC is connected via ethernet cable to the wall socket. In this case the PC doesn't observe the cable, like there is absolutely no cable connected (red X on the Network icon).

CASE 2: ROOM A is like above. In ROOM B the cable from the wall socket is connected to a simple LAN-Switch which is powered through an AC-adapter. With another Ethernet cable I connect the switch to the PC. In this case everything seems to work fine.

CASE 3: The Ethernet cable from the router is connected to the wall socket which goes to ROOM C. In ROOM C I connect the socket from ROOM A to the socket from ROOM B with a short Ethernet Cable. In ROOM B the cable goes from the wall socket in the PC. In this case everything connects fine.

So my thought was that the connection between ROOM A and ROOM B is the problem. The connection works only through the AC-powered switch. I am not an expert on Networking, but it's strange that only the extra electricity is missing. With this extra electricity from the Switch the connection is working. Let me clear that I also tried other devices instead of my Desktop PC, with my laptop it's the same.

Typical campus LAN designs call for a certain amount of built-in redundancy to maintain connectivity to the majority of users when a link or switch goes down. As you begin researching campus LAN switches, you'll likely find there are any number of ways to provide redundancy using both hardware and software. This includes redundant switches, uplinks and redundancy protocols running at Layer 2 or Layer 3. It's important to understand what redundancy techniques you want to use -- and verify that all of the necessary switches can perform the required redundancy tasks.

Physical environment considerations

Switches are deployed in a wide variety of physical locations. For example, switches that are deployed in manufacturing plants that are often hot or humid may fail if the incorrect switch hardware is used. In situations where switches will be deployed in harsh environments, specially designed switches built to better withstand heat and lack of air flow would be a better long-term option. You'll also find compact and reduced-depth switches for deployments where space is limited.

However, the switch learns from the response of that flood and records which MAC addresses responded on specific switch ports. This dynamic mapping is then maintained in the switch forwarding. By maintaining a forwarding table, switches form collision domains. This is because every port forwards frames out to only the port that the destination device resides in, per the forwarding table. That way, you don't run into problems when multiple devices on a switch attempt to forward frames at the same time. From a logical perspective, each device connected to the switch has its own Ethernet segment and can talk at full speed, without risk of collisions.

A router, on the other hand, works at Layer 3 of the OSI model -- the network layer. It is a device that logically segments networks at the IP subnet level. A router is responsible for routing IP packets between different IP networks. Routers do this using an IP routing table. In that table, they have either static or dynamically learned routes.

When an IP packet comes in, the router looks up the destination IP in the IP routing table. If that destination IP is not found in the table, the router drops the packet -- unless it has a default route. Routers form broadcast domains -- a logical division of a computer network -- because they drop broadcast packets. Broadcast packets are a way to send a packet destined to all devices within that IP subnet. A broadcast packet cannot be sent between subnets. Therefore, the only way to communicate between subnets is to route traffic from one network to the other.

A router is typically connected to at least two networks, commonly two Local Area Networks (LANs) or Wide Area Networks (WAN) or a LAN and its ISP's network . for example, your PC or workgroup and EarthLink. Routers are located at gateways, the places where two or more networks connect. Using headers and forwarding tables, routers determine the best path for forwarding the packets. Router use protocols such as ICMP to communicate with each other and configure the best route between any two hosts.
Features of Integrated Routers
Today, a wide variety of services are integrated into most broadband routers. A router will typically include a 4 - 8 port Ethernet switch (or hub) and a Network Address Translator (NAT). In addition, they usually include a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server, Domain Name Service (DNS) proxy server and a hardware firewall to protect the LAN from malicious intrusion from the Internet.

All routers have a WAN Port that connects to a DSL or cable modem for broadband Internet service and the integrated switch allows users to easily create a LAN. This allows all the PCs on the LAN to have access to the Internet and Windows file and printer sharing services.
Routers might have a single WAN port and a single LAN port and are designed to connect an existing LAN hub or switch to a WAN. Ethernet switches and hubs can be connected to a router with multiple PC ports to expand a LAN. Depending on the capabilities (kinds of available ports) of the router and the switches or hubs, the connection between the router and switches/hubs may require either straight-thru or crossover (null-modem) cables. Some routers even have USB ports, and more commonly, wireless access points built into them.

Most business networks today use switches to connect computers, printers and servers within a building or campus. A switch serves as a controller, enabling networked devices to talk to each other efficiently. Through information sharing and resource allocation, switches save businesses money and increase employee productivity.

An unmanaged switch works right out of the box. It's not designed to be configured, so you don't have to worry about installing or setting it up correctly. Unmanaged switches have less network capacity than managed switches. You'll usually find unmanaged switches in home networking equipment.

Switches are another fundamental part of many networks because they speed things up. Switches allow different nodes (a network connection point, typically a computer) of a network to communicate directly with one another in a smooth and efficient manner.

There are many different types of switches and networks. Switches that provide a separate connection for each node in a company's internal network are called LAN switches. Essentially, a LAN switch creates a series of instant networks that contain only the two devices communicating with each other at that particular moment. In this article, we will focus on Ethernet networks that use LAN switches. You will learn what a LAN switch is and how transparent bridging works, as well as about VLANs, trunking and spanning trees.

The router examines the packet's destination protocol address and determines whether it knows how to forward the packet or not. If the router does not know how to forward the packet, it typically drops the packet. If it knows how to forward packet, it changes the destination physical address to that of the next hop router and transmits the packet.

The next hop may be the destination or the next router, which executes the same switching process. As the packet moves through the internetwork, its physical address changes, but its protocol address remains same.

IEEE has developed hierarchical terminology that is useful in describing this process. Network devices without the capability to forward packets between subnetworks are called end systems (ESs, singular ES), whereas network devices with these capabilities are called intermediate systems (ISs). ISs are further divided into those that communicate only within their routing domain (Intradomain IS) and those that communicate both within and between routing domains (Interdomains IS). A routing domain is generally considered as portion of an internetwork under common administrative authority and is regulated by a particular set of administrative guidelines. Routing domains are also called autonomous systems.
