    Unfortunately, this prediction was not fulfilled: in the next thirty years, firedamp explosions in Whitehaven pits cost 137 lives.[12]:139 More generally, the Select Committee on Accidents in Mines reported in 1835 that the introduction of the Davy lamp had led to an increase in mine accidents;[9]:130 the lamp encouraged the working of mines and parts of mines that had previously been closed for safety reasons.[13] For example, in 1835 102 men and boys were killed by a firedamp explosion in a Wallsend colliery working the Bensham seam, described at the subsequent inquest by John Buddle as "a dangerous seam, which required the utmost care in keeping in a working state", which could only be worked with the Davy lamp. The coroner noted that a previous firedamp explosion in 1821 had killed 52, but directed his jury that any finding on the wisdom of continuing to work the seam was outside their province.[14]

    The lamps had to be provided by the miners themselves, not the owners, as traditionally the miners had bought their own candles from the company store. Miners still preferred the better illumination from a naked light, and mine regulations insisting that only safety lamps be used[12]:139 were draconian in principle, but in practice neither observed nor enforced. After two accidents in two years (1838-9) in Cumberland pits, both caused by safety checks being carried out by the light of a naked flame, the Royal Commission on Children's Employment commented both on the failure to learn from the first accident, and on the 'further absurdity ' of 'carrying a Davy lamp in one hand for the sake of safety, and a naked lighted candle in the other, as if for the sake of danger. Beyond this there can be no conceiveable thoughtlessness and folly; and when such management is allowed in the mine of two of the most opulent coal-proprietors in the kingdom, we cease to wonder at anything that may take place in mines worked by men equally without capital and science'[12]:140

    A mining or caving lamp has calcium carbide placed in a lower chamber, the generator. The upper reservoir is then filled with water. A threaded valve or other mechanism is used to control the rate at which the water is allowed to drip into the chamber containing the calcium carbide. By controlling the rate of water flow, the production of acetylene gas is controlled. This, in turn, controls the flow rate of the gas and the size of the flame at the burner, and thus the amount of light it produces.

    This type of lamp generally has a reflector behind the flame to help project the light forward. An acetylene gas powered lamp produces a bright, broad light. Many cavers prefer this type of unfocused light as it improves peripheral vision in the complete dark. The reaction of carbide with water produces a fair amount of heat independent of the flame. In cold caves, carbide lamp users can use this heat to help stave off hypothermia.[2]

    Miners' lamps are collectable for anyone who collects mining artifacts and, as such, are valuable to some. While many people use mining lamps for camping lights, most people collect them and keep them without using them. For that reason, a lamp does not have to be in good working condition to sell, but the better the condition, the more valuable the lamp. Determining the value of a miner's lamp can be difficult without a guide, but age, brand, and condition are good places to start.

    Nowadays they are often used as marine lanterns or as wall mounted oil lamps in the home. Also referred to as hurricane lamps, they are beautifully machined solid brass or antique brass and are electronic manufacturing PCB assembly very wind resistant. These mining lamps are not intended as a safety lamp in real mining situations, but are solidly made and fully functional for personal use

    Matching finish brackets are available for these oil lamps to be mounted to a wall or bulkhead, securing the lamp for safe use.

    At the same time that Davy was working on a design, George Stephenson had been creating his own lamp based on mechanical principles. While Stephenson later became well known for his work with locomotives, at the time electronic manufacturing PCB assembly he was an engineer and engine wright from High Pit, Killingworth in Northumberland.

    His lamp used fine tubes and an internal glass to separate the flame and the atmosphere, and was frequently championed by miners from the North-East.

    The Clanny Lamp

    A long-term worker in this field, the doctor William Reid Clanny, continued to refine his ideas on lamps after both Davy and Stephenson had moved on to other work.

    The culmination of his research was the invention, in 1839, of the lamp that now bears his name. The gauze around the flame was replaced with glass, both increasing the amount of light and shielding the flame.

    The Mueseler Lamp

    A significant lamp emerged from Europe soon after the Clanny lamp was introduced. The Mueseler lamp was designed by a Belgian engineer, Mathieu Louis Mueseler, in 1840.

    The lamp was similar to Clanny’s but, by adding a electronic manufacturing PCB assembly conical internal chimney to aid the air flow within the lamp, Mueseler reduced the tendency for the internal glass to become sooty and so gave a clearer light.

    The Marsaut Lamp

    The year 1973 saw the opening of the South Wales Miners’ Library.     In 1882 Jean Marsaut, a French mining engineer, adapted a Mueseler Lamp by replacing the internal chimney with a second conical gauze and added a full bonnet to protect the gauze.

    The lamp was highly praised and many manufacturers went on to produce their own variations on what became the blueprint for the modern mining lamp.

    The miner’s lamp was a central symbol of the SWMF and the South Wales Area NUM, featuring on the union’s coat of arms, alongside a leek and a colliery winding tower.     The miners’ union in South Wales coalfield society

    The coal miners were central to the shaping of the economics, politics and society of modern South Wales. In addition, the South Wales miners were one of the most important groups of workers in Britain in the 20th century. In the early years of the electronic manufacturing PCB assembly century, when the coal industry was at its height, South Wales was the largest and most important coalfield in Britain. At this time, the South Wales miners and their union, the SWMF (or “the Fed”), acquired a reputation as socialist radicals.     AT A PERSONAL LEVEL, IT IS A REMINDER OF MY ROOTS IN THE DERBYSHIRE COALMINING AREA, ONCE SCATTERED WITH PIT HEADS AND SLAG HEAPS, ONCE PEOPLED BY COAL-DUST COVERED MEN WITH WHITE-RINGED EYES WALKING WEARILY HOME FROM THE PITS-ALL NOW GONE; BUT ALSO GONE ARE THE CLOSE COMMUNITIES, THE BRASS BANDS AND THE FLOWERSHOWS.
    BUT ABOVE ALL, I CHERISH IT AS A MEMORIAL TO MY WONDERFUL, INTELLIGENT GRANDFATHER WHO WAS A COLLIER FOR 50 YEARS. I THINK OF HIM CARRYING THIS LAMP IN THE DARK UNDERWORLD OF THE MINES. IT IS A CONSTANT REMINDER OF OUR FAMILY ORIGINS AND THE SACRIFICES MADE TO GIVE US A MORE COMFORTABLE LIFE.

    Teaching all mine workers their rights

    Why would a miner’s safety lamp be in a museum of anesthesiology? Sir Humphry Davy, the chemist who expanded our knowledge of nitrous oxide and first suggested its use to reduce the pain of surgery, also invented a miner’s safety lamp.

    “Fire-damp,” a term used for methane gas in a mine, is a colorless and odorless gas that can trigger deadly mine explosions. The design of Davy’s lamp, introduced in 1815, was based on his discovery that a flame electronic manufacturing PCB assembly surrounded with a thin iron mesh would not ignite gas beyond the mesh, and thus not trigger mine explosions. Other notable inventors of safety lamps included Irishman William Reid Clanny and Englishman George Stephenson.

    At the Miner’s Lamp Award dinner on March 29, 2017 at The Carlu in Toronto, Miner’s Lamp Award founder, Carol Banducci, EVP and CFO, IAMGOLD Corporation, told 400 guests from Toronto’s business and academic communities: “Mental illness in youth can be devastating and touches us all. Thanks to your generosity in giving more than $1 million for research into its causes, we can now do more to give the young people it affects the hope they need and the help they deserve.”

    Trevor Young, Dean of Medicine, University of Toronto explained that as U of T is one of the world’s top research universities and the only faculty of medicine in the Greater Toronto Area, it is uniquely positioned to effect change in mental health. “Our researchers are improving understanding of the physiology of mental illness and finding new insights into how it can be treated. U of T is also integrating psychiatry with other areas of medicine, across its network of nine affiliated hospitals and 25 community sites, including the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) and Sick Kids.”

It shows the wire gauze cylinder, which should not have less than 625 apertures to the square inch.

    Flammable gases were noted to burn with a blue tinged flame and when placed on the ground the flame went out due to accumulations of the asphyxiant gas (CO2) known as black-damp or choke-damp. Davy was performing experiments with fire-damp at the same time as others. In 1815 he realised that the holes of fine metal gauze acted the same as narrow tubes (viz Stephenson’s lamp), thus mine air passed through small orifices fed a flame that would not ignite the outside gas. Davy’s original experiments with fire-damp “…discovered its ‘lag’ on ignition.” (Barnard, 1936). Davy’s lamp [see 1932.88.1152] was eventually surrounded by metal mesh and thus differed from Stephenson’s lamp with its glass surround. Thus Davy wrote, in a communication of 1816 that his “…invention consists in covering or surrounding the flame of a lamp or candle by a wire sieve…”, and further that his object “…at present is only to point out their application to the use of the collier.” (Davy, 1816 b.)

    6. The controversy over priority

    Davy was in France and Italy 1813 to 1815 but on his return started experiments with lamps for colliery use. H. R. Clanny and the then unknown George Stephenson had already shown the idea of a safety lamp.

    In 1813 the Society for Preventing Accidents in Coal Mines was formed in Sunderland (TWAS 1589 cited Smith, J. 2001) and which was directed by Reverend John Hodgeson who invited Davy in 1815 to research fire-damp (Northumberland Record Office, cited in Smith. 2001). George Stephenson was directly involved as a mining engineer and already experimenting with fire-damp and a safety lamp (Stephenson, 1817 a). In his own time Stephenson’s research led to “…the consequent formation of a Safety Lamp, which has been, and is still, used in that concern…” which his friends considered “…as precisely the same in principle with that subsequently presented to their notice by Sir Humphry Davy.” (Stephenson, 1817 b).

    It was to Stephenson that we were “…indebted for the discovery of the Principle of Safety…” that hydrogen will not explode down narrow tubes and “…will hereafter recognise as the Stephenson Principle.” (Charnley, 1817). The Principle was pointed out to several persons long before Davy came into the County, and Stephenson’s lamp was in the hands of the manufacturer during Davy’s visit. (Stephenson, 1817 b.). Stephenson made “…three lamps, all perfectly safe: and by following precisely the same steps, Sir Humphry Davy was enabled subsequently to construct one…” (Charnley, 1817). The Northumberland Record Office possesses 37 unpublished letters signed by Davy dated September 1815 to March 10th, 1818, and known as the Hodgeson Bequest. Within this context Davy made “…complete acknowledgement of the priority of Mr Stephenson’s claims”, and moreover “…acknowledges the same principle of safety which Mr Stephenson had previously established and proceeded with his experiments in the same way.” (Charnley, 1817). Admitting that “…my habits, as a practical mechanic, make me afraid of publishing theories…” Stephenson avowed that the principle “…has been successfully applied in the construction of a lamp that may be carried with perfect safety into the most explosive atmosphere” (Stephenson, 1817 a). Davy’s response described the dispute as an “…indirect attack on my scientific fame, my honour, and veracity.” (Davy, cited in Smith, J. 2001). It seemed to many that “…the invention of a miners’ lamp, similar in design to Davy’s, with a measure of evidence to suggest priority, by a largely uneducated colliery engineer, stuck in Davy’s craw.” (Smith, J. 2001). Especially as Stephenson had previously announced to many associates the principles of his lamp and begun its manufacture (Newcastle Chronicle, 1815, November 2nd). Davy only announced the results of his fire-damp experiments on 19th October.

    In 1816 Davy was awarded £2000 as a public testimonial for his lamp whereas Stephenson received a miserly 100 guineas. The following furore at such a snub resulted in a local subscription that raised £1000 from local dignitaries, colliery owners and managers. A Resolution of the Coal Trade, August 31st, 1816, considered the award to Davy for his safety lamp, but an adjourned coal owners meeting, 11.10.1816, credited Davy with inventing the safety lamp. At this point Stephenson joined the fray with letters, with supporting correspondents, in the Newcastle Chronicle. A supporter opined “Mr Geo Stephenson, of Killingworth Colliery, was the person who first discovered and applied the principle upon which lamps may be constructed.” (Brandling, 1816, Newcastle Chronicle, August 29th).

    In the spirit of fostering awareness and understanding, this year’s dinner featured inspiring speakers Sophie Grégoire Trudeau and Barenaked Ladies founder Steven Page, who talked candidly and courageously of their personal battles with mental illness, and Jamie and Patsy Anderson, recipients of the 2017 Miner’s Lamp Award for their lifelong dedication to mental health. The Andersons received their award from inaugural Miner’s Lamp Award winner, Paul Beeston, former President & CEO, Toronto Blue Jays & Rogers Centre.

    Soon after the introduction of the safety lamp underground, miners noticed that its flame changed if there were gases in the atmosphere. In the late-nineteenth century, lamp makers began to develop dedicated gas-testing lamps, such as the Clowes Hydrogen lamp, that would give more sensitive readings of methane levels.

    The Universal Lamp Company was organized in 1913 by Jacob S. Sherman to produce his Auto-Lite carbide lamps. Sherman first lamp patent was filed in 1914 and awarded as #1,167,942 on Jan. 11, 1916 that would identify the pronounced crown top and concave, urn-shaped design of all Auto-Lite lamp tops for the length of manufacture. By 1918, Sherman had moved the company from Staunton, IL to Chicago. The company continued to expand its product line and in 1933, it purchased the Shanklin Manufacturing Co. and its Springfield, IL plant. An integration of the Auto-Lite and Guy's Dropper lamp design features soon followed. Jacob S. Sherman was also the founder of the Park Sherman Company in Springfield, IL. The company sold miner's supplies (miner's cap lamps, match cases, etc.) and later specialized in things like coin banks and smoking accessories (lighters, cigarette cases, etc). The relationship between Universal Lamp Company and Park Sherman is not altogether clear, but Sherman founded both and operated both. Universal continued to manufacture carbide lamps at the Springfield plant until 1960 when the carbide lamp products were discontinued. Likewise, the Park Sherman Company operated out of Springfield until 1960 when it was sold to a New Jersey company. During the 1913-1960 span of Auto-Lite's cap lamp life, the company produced at least six top design styles, four bottom styles, six cap mounting hooks, three water valve variations, three different water doors, two gas tube variations, at least nine top markings, and at least seven different bottom markings. That's a lot of combinations for a cap lamp that maintained its distinctive looks over those 47 years. Although they produced mainly cap lamps, Auto-Lite did manufacture an 8-hour hand lamp marked Big Boy in combinations of brass and steel and with two different bail designs. The Springfield plant of Universal Lamp Co. has claimed that it produced over 9,000,000 carbide lamps during its operations!


    In accepting the award, Patsy Anderson said: “We are so proud to be part of a community that has chosen to learn about mental health and which advocates for those who are challenged by mental health issues.” Added Jamie Anderson: “I like to remind people that our mind is far and away the most complicated part of us. Relative to other health issues, it has been under-resourced and under-researched.”

    Other inspiring mental health advocates George Cope, President & CEO, BCE (and founder of “Bell Let’s Talk”) and Michael Landsberg (former host of “Off the record” and founder of SickNotWeak) also attended the dinner.

    Reflecting on the evening, Sophie Grégoire Trudeau summed up the renewed sense of hope generated by the academic and business and communities’ partnership: “It's my sincere wish that every person who struggles with mental health can find support, love and acceptance. It warmed my heart to see so many people come together to support the Miner’s Lamp Innovation Fund in Prevention & Early Detection of Severe Mental Illness. Thank you for taking mental illness seriously, and for dedicating the resources needed to build better and more effective treatments.”

    Following a number of serious explosions in North East coal mines due to pockets of flammable gas known as 'firedamp', Humphry Davy was asked by the Rector of Bishopwearmouth (near Newcastle) to find a means of lighting coal mines safely. In an intense period of work from mid-October to December 1815, Davy made various prototype lamps. The final design was very simple: a basic lamp with a wire gauze chimney enclosing the flame. The holes let light pass through, but the metal of the gauze absorbs the heat. The lamp is safe to use because the flame can't heat enough flammable gas to cause an explosion, although the flame itself will change colour.

    The lamp was successfully tested in Hebburn colliery in January 1816 and quickly went into production. The introduction of the lamp had an immediate effect, decreasing the number of fatalities per million tons of coal produced enormously and also increased the amount of coal produced as it allowed miners to mine deeper seams of coal. In this way it made a fundamental contribution to the continuing industrialisation of Britain and to many other mining countries, during the nineteeth century.

    At precisely the same time however George Stephenson, a mining engineer at Killingworth Colliery, was also working on the problem. He independently invented a remarkably similar lamp and soon the two inventors were locked in a bitter dispute over priority. Davy needed to differentiate his lamp from Stephenson’s and therefore claimed that his invention was the product of scientific research, despite there being very little science in it - indeed the only science in the lamp is the discovery (made independently by Davy, Stephenson and Smithson Tennant) that explosions would not pass through narrow tubes. Davy won this battle of words going on to become President of the Royal Society, while Stephenson went on to invent the first steam powered locomotive for the railroad.

    Age
    When valuing a miner's lamp, age is one of the most important considerations. The older the miner's lamp, the more valuable it is. Lamps less than 30 years old are likely not very valuable. Vintage lamps and antique lamps (50 to 75 years or older) are considerably more valuable. Some miner's lamps have the date of production stamped on the front, but many of them do not, which makes ageing them more difficult. However, if you know the original purchase date of the lamp, this helps with the evaluation.



    Brand
    The coming of the First World War saw the company making shell casings for the Army, with the workforce reaching 70. The years between the wars were not so successful however and the depression led to a decline in business and a cut in the workforce. It was the Second World War, which brought about an upturn in their business, with the company winning contracts from the Ministry of Supply for the manufacture of steel parts and a small battery operated "Lightbuoy" designed to locate survivors from torpedoed ships. Following the war the company continued to prosper until the decline of the coal industry in the UK forced management to look for alternatives for its workforce. It was the company's practice of manufacturing Cambrian Miners' Lamps for presentation to political, military and sporting dignitaries that was to provide a solution to their problem.
    Very soon the company's product was to find its way into shops all around the world. This departure into the gift market did not however signal an end to the production of safety lamps. The Cambrian Safety Lamp is still seen as an essential tool for detecting dangerous gas build ups and is used in collieries, ships holds and sewers today.

    Most miners' lamps feature brand stamps on the bottom or side. Some brands are more valuable than others, and you can look up the brand to compare it to the selling prices of other lamps from that brand. In some cases, certain brands use better quality materials, better designs, or have more desirability for one reason or another, which make them more valuable. Common brands like Eccles or Davy are worth less, while rare brands like Thomas Williams are worth more.

    When all of the carbide in a lamp has been reacted, the carbide chamber contains a wet paste of slaked lime (calcium hydroxide). This is emptied into a waste bag and the chamber can be refilled.

    Small carbide lamps called "carbide candles" or "smokers" are used for blackening rifle sights to reduce glare. They are used because of the sooty flame produced by acetylene.

    Another reason for the increase in accidents was the unreliability of the lamps themselves. The bare gauze was easily damaged, and once just a single wire broke or rusted away, the lamp became unsafe. Work carried out by a scientific witness and reported by the Select Committee showed that the Davy lamp became unsafe in airflows so low that a Davy lamp carried at normal walking pace against normal airflows in walkways was only safe if provided with a draught shield[15]:13–17 (not normally fitted), and the Committee noted that accidents had happened when the lamp was "in general and careful use; no one survived to tell the tale of how these occurrences took place; conjecture supplied the want of positive knowledge most unsatisfactorily; but incidents are recorded which prove what must follow unreasonable testing of the lamp; and your Committee are constrained to believe that ignorance and a false reliance upon its merits, in cases attended with unwarrantable risks, have led to disastrous consequences" [9]:131 The "South Shields Committee", a body set up by a public meeting there[16] (in response to an explosion at the St Hilda pit in 1839)[17] to consider the prevention of accidents in mines had shown that mine ventilation in the North-East was generally deficient, with an insufficient supply of fresh air giving every opportunity for explosive mixtures of gas to accumulate.[15]:28–36[c] A subsequent Select Committee in 1852 concurred with this view; firedamp explosions could best be prevented by improving mine ventilation (by the use of steam ejectors: the committee specifically advised against fan ventilation), which had been neglected because of over-reliance on the safety of the Davy lamp.[18]:viii

    The Regulation and Inspection of Mines Act of 1860 therefore required coal mines to have an adequate amount of ventilation, constantly produced, to dilute and render harmless noxious gases so that work areas were - under ordinary circumstances - in a fit state to be worked (areas where a normally safe atmosphere could not be ensured were to be fenced off "as far as possible"): it also required safety lamps to be examined and securely locked by a duly authorised person before use.

    Even when new and clean, illumination from the safety lamps was very poor, and the problem was not fully resolved until electric lamps became widely available in the late 19th century.

    Stamped with the number 908 the base fuel compartment the history of this lamp is not known.
    It is thought that this model of lamp was made in the north east of England and is thought to be quite an early model. This assumption is made due to it having only 4 metal pillars surrounding the looking glass. Later models have five risers due to requirements to improve safety.
    The miners safety lamp was used, and is still used in some underground activities, to illuminate an area deep underground.
    It was Sir Humphry Davy who discovered that if you shield a naked flame with a thin metal gauze it will not ignite explosive gasses such as methane found in deep mines.

    First National Battery miner’s cap lamps have been designed for harsh underground mining conditions and are used by all the major South African Mining Groups which mine platinum, gold, diamonds, coal, uranium, copper, iron and antimony. Currently there are more than 200 000 First National Battery miner’s cap lamps in use underground daily in South Africa.

    Furthermore, the First National Battery miner’s cap lamps are exported to mining companies throughout Africa and used extensively in their mining operations.

    The use of the First National Battery miner’s cap lamps is not just limited to the mining industry but also extends to other applications such as confectionary, grape farming for the wine industry and other outdoor use.

    Maintenance of miner’s cap lamps
    All First National Battery miner’s cap lamps are fully maintainable by the end user, which results in reduced downtime and cost of ownership.

    Training on maintenance and care on mine lighting
    First National Battery’s training department aims to provide free, quality training to lamp room personnel on the repairs and maintenance of the complete range of miner’s cap lamps. The department equips trainees with the relevant skills to effectively contribute to the economic development of an organisation, as well as maintaining equipment according to industry/Department of Mineral Resources /OEM standards.

    As a declaration of authenticity, all the lamps that we manufacture here in Wales are stamped on the underside ‘MADE IN WALES’. We are proud to be the only officially Welsh Company manufacturing reproduction ornamental miner’s lamps. This means when you buy one of our lamps you are buying something that has a real connection with the mining heritage, made by the sons and daughters of actual miners.

Our lamps are available in a variety of different sizes and finishes from the all brass lamp, mostly used by the common miner, through to our “manager” type lamp manufactured in the more expensive materials of nickel effect combined with a brass base, that would have been used by the more superior and distinguished workers in the colliery as opposed to that used by the common miner.

    The company was founded in 1860 by Evan Thomas, and was originally based at premises in Cardiff Street, Aberdare. In it moved to new premises at Graig Street just off Monk Street, Aberdare. Mr. Lewis N. Williams who was an authority on the theory and construction of safety lamps joined Mr. Evan Thomas in the business. In 1907 the business became a limited company operating under the name of E.Thomas & Williams Ltd. During the 1880s and 1890s the company exhibited lamps at various important industrial exhibitions, winning many prestigious awards including the gold medal at the London Mining Exhibition. The expansion of the coal industry was creating an active home market for their goods and exports were also on the increase with goods being exported to countries such as Australia, India, South Africa, Canada, America and Russia.

    Led Miner's Lamp

    Miner’s cap lamp charging racks /frames

    Davy Coal Miner's Lamp
    This reproduction of a Welsh miner's lamp is made of heavy, beautifully machined solid brass, glass, copper, and steel mesh, with a stainless steel top. Made in Wales. They are essentially hand made, one by one, with the look and feel of the real thing, but of course are made for non-miner customers. Very wind resistant. Use ordinary lamp oil or kerosene for fuel. The handsome solid brass gimbal (shown) allows you to position the lamp on any wall or door post. Buy two, and save over 16%. Note: These are not intended as working safety lamps.

    Safety lamp - about 20cm tall
    The lamp also provided a crude test for the presence of gases.
    If flammable gas mixtures were present, the flame of the Davy lamp burned higher with a blue tinge.
    Miners lamps were made of brass so if they knocked against metal or rocks they would not cause any sparks.
    It was and possibly still is, an offence to relight a miners lamp such as this underground.
    Miners could also place a safety lamp close to the ground to detect gases, such as carbon dioxide, that are denser than air and so could collect in depressions in the mine; if the mine air was oxygen-poor, the lamp flame would be extinguished.
