High-risk areas
The high-risk area requires considerably more light in emergency mode than evacuation routes and anti-panic areas. The requirement is at least 15 lx or 10 % of the lighting strength normally required for the location. The ratio between the highest and lowest lighting strength should be a maximum of 10:1. When 1500 lx is required for normal operation on the task area, the lighting strength in emergency mode must be at least 150 lx.
The BIRNS Emergency Lighting Fixture (ELF), BIRNS Model 4702, is a seismically qualified nuclear-grade incandescent, 450 lumen wall-mounted emergency light. Its integral sealed rechargeable batteries and solid-state charging circuitry provide superior performance, and the entire unit is proven capable of withstanding a major earthquake. The slim-profiled BIRNS ELF has a mirror-finish, stainless steel construction that’s impervious to humidity, acids, and other corrosives and is easy to clean. It’s designed in accordance with UL 924, "Emergency Lighting Equipment" and NFPA 70, "National Electrical Code” and provides >8 hours standby emergency illumination in case of a power failure.
Applications:
Created with all 304 stainless-steel construction and nuclear-compatible materials, this proven emergency tool is suitable for use inside primary nuclear containment. Plus, if you have Holophane M-19 units, you can upgrade to the BIRNS ELF without changing your mounting configuration. The BIRNS ELF has identical mounting configuration and envelope dimensions as the M-19 units, while providing exponential improvement in reliability, performance and serviceability.
Depending on requirements, you can plan any solution from the simplest signage and directional variants with advanced self-test solutions, which test automatically according to regulations, through to large and complex BUS solutions for centralised control of emergency equipment. You get the same freedom of choice from Glamox, whether you choose decentralised or centralised emergency lighting solutions.
The purpose of emergency lighting is to ensure the lighting is provided promptly, automatically and for a suitable time when the normal power supply to the lighting fails to ensure that people within the building can evacuate safely in the event of an emergency. Emergency lighting can be provided by means of local self-contained batteries mounted within the emergency luminaire or by a central battery wired via a dedicated network to the emergency fittings.

Emergency lighting is often referred to as egress lighting. Emergency lights are used in commercial buildings as a safety precaution to power outages, so that people will be able to find their way out of a building. Exit signs are often used in conjunction with emergency lighting.
New York City requires emergency lights to carry a Calendar Number signifying approval for local installation,[1] Chicago requires emergency lighting to have a metal face plate,[2] and Los Angeles requires additional exit signs be installed within 18 inches (460 mm) of the floor around doors to mark exits during a fire, as smoke rises and tends to block out higher installed units.[3]

With a fresh look and many more features than its predecessor, it's also sure to brighten up your game and satisfy the emergency lighting enthusiast in anyone.

Emergency Lighting
In critical situations, emergency equipment that works perfectly can mean the difference between life and death.
As well as designing a range of emergency equipment to guarantee the best possible evacuation lighting, Glamox has also paid attention to its design and workmanship. Glamox makes things simple. If you specify emergency lighting integrated into the luminaires and pre-installed from the factory, then you are sure of a good safe and reliable solution.
An evacuation route requires at least 1 lx at the floor in the centre of the evacuation route and 0.5 lx in the surrounding area. Changes in direction and/or stairs need to be highlighted with an increased lighting level. Stairways should also be illuminated. In places where rescue equipment is located e.g. fire extinguishers, alarm buttons or first-aid cabinets, the lighting requirement increases to 5 lx.
The ratio of high to low lighting strength should be a maximum of 40:1. Therefore it is unsuitable to use a few strong light-points as emergency lighting in an evacuation route.
Normally, the lighting requirements necessary for an evacuation route cannot rely solely on safe condition signs. Often a combination of safe condition signs and correctly placed emergency luminaires is needed with suitable luminous flux in emergency mode.
Open areas/anti-panic lighting
Anti-panic emergency lighting is intended to make it easier for people in the premises to find an evacuation route. A lighting strength of at least 0.5 lx is required in such areas. Here too the ratio between highest and lowest lighting strength must not be greater than 40:1.
Flexible power requirements and circuit counts let you design the system you want. The ELTS2 allows selected houselights that are normally fed by a dimmer, to provide Code-compliant, full-on emergency illumination during loss of utility power, fire alarm activation, or manual activation. Unlike systems that simply bypass the dimmer, ELTS2 actually transfers the load (both hot and neutral conductors) from the dimmer output to a separate emergency power source. A local control panel that includes a test keyswitch and LED indicators clearly displays system status.
ELTS2 works with new or existing fire-alarm or auxiliary-activation systems. Remote keyswitch stations also give you secure control where you need it.
Emergency light fittings include a battery as a backup power source that is continuously charged. Emergency light fittings can tell when the power has failed and immediately switch to using the backup battery. The battery needs to power the light fitting for a minimum of 3 hours. To conserve power, the light output from the fitting is reduced, often to 10% of the normal light output.

Modern emergency lighting is installed in virtually every commercial and high occupancy residential building. The lights consist of one or more incandescent bulbs or one or more clusters of high-intensity light-emitting diodes (LED). The emergency lighting heads are usually either PAR 36 sealed beams or wedge base lamps. All units have some sort of a device to focus and intensify the light they produce. This can either be in the form of a plastic cover over the fixture, or a reflector placed behind the light source. Most individual light sources can be rotated and aimed for where light is needed most in an emergency, such as toward fire exits. Modern fixtures usually have a test button of some sort which temporarily overrides the unit and causes it to switch on the lights and operate from battery power even if the main power is still on. Modern systems are operated with relatively low voltage, usually from 6-12 volts. This both reduces the size of the batteries required and reduces the load on the circuit to which the emergency light is wired. Modern fixtures include a small transformer in the base of the fixture which steps-down the voltage from main current to the low voltage required by the lights. Batteries are commonly made of lead-calcium, and can last for 10 years or more on continuous charge. U.S. fire safety codes require a minimum of 90 minutes on battery power during a power outage along the path of egress.
To indicate that a power outage has occurred, some models of emergency lights can only be shut off manually after they have been activated, even if the main building power has come back on. The system will stay lit until the reset button on the side of the unit is pressed.

Me again. I was wondering if someone could provide advice on emergency lighting please. I couldn't find a similar topic - so thought I would ask.
Roof has various different pitches, with very little flat area for housing plant on. Plant consists of various condensing units, smoke extract, pv & generator.
I have currently provided: light escape route to 1lx min & plant to 15lx as high risk. I've not provided Emergency lighting to the PV panels, as at the minute, they are fairly inaccessible (having to climb over pitched roofs). 3hr min battery packs
Anyway, someone has commented saying the roof is an open area greater than 60m2, therefore needs emergency lighting to 0.5lxmin.

Through NEMA, the Emergency Lighting Section develops industry positions on legislative and regulatory initiatives that may affect member products, markets, and customers. NEMA's work has resulted in contributions to public policy development and in promoting competitiveness, technological progress, and public safety. On the Government Affairs homepage members can search for and e-mail federal representatives to convey opinions regarding energy policy or other issues related to the electroindustry.
NEMA Government Affairs provides specific services to its members and information in the areas of Environment, Health & Safety; Energy; and International Trade & Commerce.

Advising and working with the Environmental Protection Agency on the Energy Star® Exit Sign program
Advocating market-based approaches to enhance the use and penetration of energy-efficiency technologies

An emergency lighting installation may be either a central standby source such as a bank of lead acid batteries and control gear/chargers supplying slave fittings throughout the building, or may be constructed using self-contained emergency fittings which incorporate the lamp, battery, charger and control equipment.
Self-contained emergency lighting fittings may operate in "Maintained" mode (illuminated all the time or controlled by a switch) or "Non-Maintained" mode (illuminated only when the normal supply fails).
Another popular method for lighting designers, architects and contractors are battery backup ballasts that install within or adjacent to existing lighting fixtures. Upon sensing power loss, the ballasts switch into emergency mode turning the existing lighting into emergency lighting in order to meet both the NFPA's Life Safety Code and the national Electric Code without the need of wiring separate circuits or external wall mounts.
Codes of practice for remote mounted emergency lighting generally mandate that wiring from the central power source to emergency luminaires be kept segregated from other wiring, and constructed in fire resistant cabling and wiring systems.
