    Because window air conditioner units have condensers and expansion units, some of them can be used as makeshift dehumidifiers by sending their heat exhaust back into the same room as the cooled air, instead of the outside environment. If the condensate from the cooling coils is drained away from the room as it drips off the cooling coils, the result will be room air that is drier but slightly warmer.

    However, many window air conditioners are designed to dispose of condensate water by re-evaporating it into the exhaust air stream, which cancels out the air humidity decrease caused by the condensation of moisture on the cooling coils. To be effective as a dehumidifier, an air conditioner must be designed or modified so that most or all of the water that condenses is drained away in liquid form, rather than re-evaporated. Even if condensate is drained, a modified air conditioner is still less efficient than a single-purpose appliance with a design optimized for dehumidification. Dehumidifiers are designed to pass air directly over the cooling coils and then the heating coils in a single efficient pass through the device.

    Most of the time we don't give a moment's thought to the atmosphere in our homes (or outside); why should we, it's invisible! If we think about it at all, we tend to think of it as a gas. Look up at the sky and you see a different point of view. Clouds whizzing over your head are a sure sign that the air contains water, either as a vapor (if it's dry) or liquid (if it's actually raining). But the same is true inside your home. You might think the air is dry—and if you have central heating, it might even feel that way—but there's a huge amount of moisture around you too. If you dry laundry inside your home or do a lot of stove-top cooking without proper ventilation, the humidity levels can be surprisingly high. Condensation on the windows (or, even worse, water dripping down the walls—as it sometimes does in my kitchen) is a sure sign of a humidity problem.

    The basic functional principle of a condense drying dehumidifier is really quite simple. A fan draws in humid air and carries it through a refrigerated evaporator. The air is cooled well below its dew point. The water condenses on the cold surface of the evaporator and drips into a water container or is led directly to a drain. Then the cold dry air continues through a hot condenser which heats it up and returns it to the room to pick up new humidity. This procedure is continued until the desired condition is achieved.

    Why does indoor humidity matter?

    Note that the name of each part tells you exactly what it does – the compressor compresses, the condenser condenses, the expansion valve “expands” (facilitates drop in pressure), and the evaporator evaporates. The design of the compressor and expansion valve, while interesting, is not fundamental to understanding how an air conditioner works. Do note that both the condenser and evaporator have a coiled and/or finned design (through which the refrigerant flows) to maximize exposed surface area (to the surroundings). The reason for this design choice is that it ensures maximum efficiency in transferring heat. As you’ll see below, most of the heat transfer within the system occurs at the evaporator and the condenser.

    The Refrigerant Tells The Story

    To better understand how central air conditioning systems work, let’s follow the path of the refrigerant as it travels through the system. Note the temperature, pressure, and phase (liquid/gas) of the refrigerant during each stage of the process as these qualities dictate the direction of heat as it moves into or out of the system.

    Remember, as we discussed above, the refrigerant that leaves an AC system’s compressor is a hot high pressure vapor. This vapor enters the system’s condenser and is condensed to a hot high pressure liquid. This phase change (the refrigerant changing from a vapor to a liquid) requires an energy transfer between the refrigerant and the ambient air. It requires that the air around the condenser coils be colder than the coils (and the refrigerant within the coils), to allow for thermal exchange in the correct direction (thermal energy needs to move from refrigerant to the air to facilitate condensation of the refrigerant). If the ambient air isn’t colder than the condenser coils then the refrigerant within the coils won’t condense. This process is aided by a large fan (over the condenser) and the design of the condenser coils themselves (they are spread out over a large surface area to facilitate more efficient heat dissipation).

    So, in a central AC system, the ambient air’s relative lower temperature (aided by the unit’s fan and condenser coil design) acts to condense the refrigerant within the condenser coils. This process takes place outside the home, and the air relevant to the process is the air outside the home. In a dehumidifier, on the other hand, the same cold air that was cooled over the unit’s evaporator coils is also used to “cool” the condenser coils and condense the refrigerant vapor leaving the dehumidifier’s compressor to a hot high pressure liquid. This means that the air that was cooled by the dehumidifier’s cold evaporator coils is almost immediately warmed by moving over the unit’s condenser coils.

    Buy a portable dehumidifier – A portable dehumidifier can be very helpful when placed in rooms that produce the most moisture. Some central ACs have a setting to circulate the air throughout your home, but not necessarily cool it. The mode is called “fan mode” on most systems. If the system is in fan mode, the moisture produced in the shower, basement, or other moisture-producing places is recirculated to the rest of the home. Place the dehumidifier in these rooms to reduce or even remove the moisture from the air before it is recirculated.
    Dehumidifying heat pipes – One fairly easy solution is to install a dehumidifying heat pipe onto your central AC. This heat pipe will act as a dehumidifier when the AC pulls air into the system. In fact, it can remove up to 91% of the moisture from the air flowing through the system, according to the Department of Energy.
    Ventilation systems – One solution that’s often forgotten by homeowners is the simple one: ventilation. If the moisture is produced in the bathroom, make sure you have a good ventilation fan. Also make sure the fan is running when it needs to be. Ventilation systems can suck the moisture right out of the room before it even reaches the AC.
    All 3 of these solutions can be used in conjunction with one another, but only in extreme cases is that necessary. Remember, you still want some moisture in the air because dry air can cause skin irritation and difficulties breathing. The most affordable of the 3 is the portable dehumidifier. Depending on the size of the room you place it in, you may need a more expensive unit, but they generally don’t run higher than $200-$250.

    Better-quality dehumidifiers may have a frost or ice sensor. These will turn off the machine and allow the ice-covered coils to warm and defrost. Once defrosted, the machine will automatically restart. Most ice sensors are simple thermal switches and do not directly sense the presence or absence of ice buildup. An alternative design senses the impeded airflow and shuts off the cooling coils in a similar manner.

    We’ll start dehumidity unit,dehumidifier PCBA turnkey off with the refrigerant as it leaves manufacturing the air conditioning system’s evaporator. Cool low pressure refrigerant vapor enters the compressor (located outside the home next to the condenser) where it is compressed into a hot high pressure vapor. The vapor is hot at this point because it has picked up heat from two different sources. It picked up heat from the warm air that was cooled at the evaporator and it also picked up the heat that was generated when the vapor was compressed from low pressure to high pressure inside the compressor.

    Covering the recharge zone manufacturing of the rotor is a heater. It warms circulated humid air which is pulled back through the desiccant drum in the opposite direction of incoming humid air. This warm air (heated by the heater) liberates moisture from the desiccant. Thus, moisture is transferred from the desiccant to the air. The warm humid air that leaves the recharge zone enters the condenser on the front of the dehumidifier. Here warm humid air condenses at room temperature. The condensate drips down into a condensate collection bucket, much the same way as it does in a compressor based dehumidifier.

    Let’s summarize the movement manufacturing of air and the transfer of moisture within the system”

    1. Incoming humid room air is pulled first through the condenser on dehumidity unit,dehumidifier PCBA turnkey the front of the dehumidifier and second through the process zone of the desiccant drum. It exhausts as warm dry air out of the dehumidifier. Moisture is transferred once – on the desiccant rotor – moisture is transferred from the incoming humid air to the desiccant by adsorption.

    2. Circulating humid air within the dehumidifier is pulled first through the recharge zone of the desiccant rotor and second through the condenser on the front of the dehumidifier. Moisture is transferred twice – first its transferred on the desiccant rotor – moisture is transferred from the desiccant to the hot air (which is warmed by the heater first) moving through the rotor. Second, moisture is transferred on the condenser – moisture is transferred from the hot humid air to the condenser by condensation.

    Do I Need a Dehumidifier?
    In Pennsylvania, we can have hot and humid summer days, but only for manufacturing about 3 or 4 months in the year. The other 9 months are spent in ice, snow, heavy winds, and heavy rains. Depending on your climate, this may not be the case. For example, a home in Jacksonville, Florida sits in a climate with humidity levels of over 50% nearly every day, all year long. In fact, the average humidity levels in 2010 were 75.8%. In these climates, a dehumidifier is absolutely necessary.

    For our neighbors in Pennsylvania manufacturing and the majority of the country, it’s likely that all you need is a properly sized AC unit. If the unit is too large for your home it will kick on, cool your home quickly, and shut off. Not only is this not efficient or healthy for the system, but it’s also not doing any dehumidifying. It takes about a half hour for an AC unit to effectively remove moisture from your home. If the unit shuts off before this point, you’ll notice no difference in the humidity levels of your home. A unit that runs constantly will pull moisture from the air. If your unit runs fairly often, then you generally will not need a dehumidifier.

    As far as design dehumidity unit,dehumidifier PCBA turnkey (form) is concerned, both AC systems and dehumidifiers consist of exactly the same four critical components – a compressor, condenser, expansion valve (or similar device), and evaporator. The major difference in design deals with the location of each system’s compressor and condenser. Central air conditioning systems have their compressor and condenser units located outside of the home and their evaporator units inside the home. Dehumidifiers have all of their components located within close proximity of each other within the same appliance. Thus, a central AC system has what is called a “split-system” design while a dehumidifier is an all-in-one appliance.

    The location of each of the critical components we listed above is important as it relates to what each system is optimized for (AC systems for cooling and dehumidifiers for dehumidifying). Again, the evaporator dehumidity unit,dehumidifier PCBA turnkey and condenser coils are in two separate locations in a central AC system. One is located inside the home (evaporator) and one is located outside the home (condenser). In an AC system the air that is cooled over the system’s evaporator coils is circulated back into the home as the cool air coming out of the floor vents in your home. In a dehumidifier the air that is cooled over the system’s evaporator coils is instead immediately pulled through the dehumidifier’s condenser coils before it exhausts out of the top, back, or side of the dehumidifier. Why the difference in design?

    Most dehumidifiers have top-mounted air discharge and can be placed against walls, but if you do not have top-mounted discharge, make sure the dehumidifier is located away from walls and furniture, so that air can circulate freely around the unit. This will result in better operation of the product.

    Doors dehumidity unit,dehumidifier PCBA turnkey and windows to the space being dehumidified should be closed while the unit is running. This will ensure that the space is dehumidified as efficiently as possible.

    Locate away from sources of dust and dirt (like woodworking equipment), which can clog coils and grills.

    Observe all manufacturer warnings regarding electrical safety. In particular, never set up water drainage or disposal near electrical circuits or devices. Make sure the dehumidifier is connected to a properly grounded outlet. Keep drain hoses away from electrical cords and connections.

    If you are planning to use a hose to drain the dehumidifier’s water bucket, make sure the unit is located near enough to the floor drain or sump to avoid the need for a long and unwieldy hose. Don’t create a tripping hazard!

    Do not be alarmed if the air temperature directly around the unit is warmer than in surrounding areas. As a dehumidifier removes moisture from the air, it slightly warms the space around it.

    In addition, most air conditioners are controlled by a thermostat which senses temperature, rather than a humidistat that senses humidity and is typically used to control a dehumidifier. A thermostat is not designed for the control of humidity, and controls it poorly if at all.

    To remove all of the water even with relatively dry air conditions, it is important that not all the air is cooled down by the evaporator as there is a risk that the dew point cannot be fully achieved. Instead only part of the air is led through the evaporator to ensure maximum condensation while the rest is by-passed as shown above. This results in a mixed 18°C and 85% RH air flow between the evaporator (2) and the condenser (3). When passing the hot condenser the mixed air flow will ensure that the condenser is sufficiently cooled.

    The final result is an outlet air temperature from the dehumidifier of 33°C and 35% RH (4). The temperature is increased because energy is added by the compressor and by the latent heat from the condensation process.

    Humidity control
    The internal hygrostat on the display allows control of exactly how much you want to lower the relative humidity. Set the degree of relative humidity required, and the hygrostat will automatically stop the dehumidification process when the value is met. This way you do not risk possible damage from drying out materials too much, and you get a much more energy efficient dehumidification process.

    Older CDTs do not come with a built-in hygrostat, but an external hygrostat can easily be connected to all CDTs if needed.

    Desiccant dehumidifiers are especially well-suited for removing moisture from air at a low temperature and low humidity level.

    At the heart of these dehumidifiers is a patented desiccant wheel made up of corrugated material. Air passes through the flutes of the material, contacting the desiccant. The incoming process air stream gives off its moisture to the desiccant. The process air is dry as it leaves the wheel. The humidity-laden wheel rotates slowly into a second, smaller airstream which has been heated.

    This smaller exhaust airstream, known as reactivation air, warms the desiccant. The warmed desiccant gives off its moisture which is then carried away by the reactivation air. The newly dried desiccant material is rotated back into the process air, where it absorbs moisture once again. Desiccant dehumidification systems have become increasingly popular in recent years because of lower equipment costs achieved through economies of scale, modular designs, and the use of desiccant silica gel wheels. It should be noted that whereas the reactivation heat in the original desiccant systems was produced by burning natural gas, all electric desiccant systems are now available. These desiccant systems are extremely efficient and simple in that they use rejected heat from the condenser to regenerate the desiccant wheel.

    Homes with More Humidity than Normal
    In some cases, homeowners experience more humid home environments than most of us. If you live in a humid home, then try one of the following:

    If the space being dehumidified has temperatures that typically fall below 65 degrees (F), you may want to consider buying a product that is specified for use at lower temperatures.

    Frost can form on the condensing coils if the air temperature drops below 65 degrees, and may negatively affect the performance of the product by causing the compressor to cycle on and off repeatedly without removing moisture from the air. If this happens, the unit should be switched off and allowed to defrost before it is turned back on. Some dehumidifiers come with an antifrost sensor, which will automatically turn the unit off if the air temperature drops below a certain point.

    Qualified ENERGY STAR models are available that are rated for use at temperatures as low as 42 degrees.


    Relative Humidity (RH) and Humidistats

    Humidity, the amount of moisture or water vapor in the air, is most often talked about in terms of Relative Humidity (RH). RH is the amount of water vapor actually present in the air compared to the greatest amount of water vapor the air can hold at that temperature. The optimum RH level for a building is generally considered to be between 30% and 50%. Anything above this range may promote bacteria growth. (In colder climates, during the heating season, humidity levels should be in the range of 30% to 40% RH to prevent window condensation.)

    Many dehumidifiers include a built-in humidistat, a device that allows you to set the desired RH level that you would like for the room. Once the room reaches the desired RH level, the dehumidifier will cycle on and off automatically to maintain the level.

    If your dehumidifier does not have a built-in humidistat, or has a humidistat that does not show RH levels purchase a hygrometer (a gauge that measures relative humidity) separately and hang it near the dehumidifier. The hygrometer will measure RH levels, and enable you to monitor when to turn the dehumidifier on and off.

    We're walking water bags—our bodies are typically 60 percent water—but that doesn't mean our homes should be like fish tanks! High humidity can cause all kinds of problems. It can make clothing go moldy in your cupboard, it's bad for computers (it can cause rusting or short circuits inside their cases) and optical equipment (that's why things like cameras and binoculars are sold with water-absorbing sachets of silica gel)—and it's bad for your health too. According to a scientific review of the health effects of humidity published in 1986 by Arundel et al, high levels of indoor humidity can encourage a flourishing of bacteria, viruses, mites and fungi, and more respiratory infections and sicknesses: "The majority of adverse health effects caused by relative humidity would be minimized by maintaining indoor levels between 40 and 60%."

    Photo: Water-absorbing silica gel, often packaged in little paper bags inside camera and binocular cases, effectively tackles small amounts of humidity. But it's no help if you have a major excess of moisture in your home. For that, you need a proper dehumidifier.

    What does a dehumidifier do?

    A dehumidifier is a bit like a vacuum cleaner: it sucks in air from your room at one end, takes the moisture out of it, and then blows it back out into the room again. The moisture drips through into a collection tank that you have to empty, from time to time. How is the moisture removed? That's where a dehumidifier is more like an air conditioning unit (sometimes called an air-con or HVAC, which stands for heating ventilating air conditioning unit), which, itself, works a bit like a refrigerator! Confused by all these appliances? Let's look inside a dehumidifier and find out what all the bits do.

    Temperature control
    If the room temperature is outside the operating range (3-32°C) the dehumidifier stops. It starts up again automatically when the room temperature is once again within the operating range. This means that the dehumidifier will keep running as long as the room temperature remains within the operating range, continuously reducing the RH-value.

This type of dehumidifier retails for between $150 and $350 and is the only type of desiccant dehumidifier that is comparable to a compressor based dehumidifier, at least in terms of size and moisture removal rate. That being said, they are still smaller, lighter, and remove less moisture per day than comparable compressor based dehumidifiers in most scenarios. Both sizes work quietly to wring out humidity from the air so you can save on utilities and be comfortable. And, they're designed to be configurable with your existing system in a multitude of ways or operate independently away from your system if space is a problem.

    Ice buildup[edit]
    Under certain conditions of manufacturing temperature and humidity, ice can form on a refrigeration dehumidifier's evaporator coils. The ice buildup can impede airflow and eventually form a solid block encasing the coils. This buildup prevents the dehumidifier from operating effectively, and can cause water damage if condensed water drips off the accumulated ice and not into the collection tray. In extreme cases, the ice manufacturing can deform or distort mechanical elements, causing permanent damage.

    The short answer is yes, but that’s not the air conditioner’s primary function. An air conditioner’s core function is to cool the room. In order to do this, it pulls the air into the manufacturing system and runs it over refrigerant-filled coils to cool the air. After going through the AC process, the cool air is sent back to the room(s) while the heat extracted from the air is expelled to the outdoors.

    Air conditioners are found in any place that requires cooling – this includes homes, hotels, cars, and even boats. To simplify things we’re going to limit the scope of this discussion to central air conditioning systems, most of which are split systems – those air conditioning systems commonly found in homes and offices in which some of the parts that make up the air conditioning system manufacturing are found inside of the home or office building and other parts are located outside of the home or office building. We’ll discuss the exact parts we’re referring to and their locations in greater detail later.

    Before we begin, it’s important to know and understand that air conditioning systems are closed pressurized systems. Flowing through the system is a “magic fluid” that facilitates heat transfer. This “fluid” is called the refrigerant. The refrigerant is a chemical compound with the physical and chemical characteristics necessary to facilitate the proper operation of the system. This means that it needs to have the correct boiling point, freezing point, etc. to allow for the system to work correctly. If the chemical doesn’t meet the exact criteria required by the system then it cannot be used. This is why most residential and commercial air conditioning systems use one of only two different types of refrigerants: R-22 and R410A. Most dehumidifiers use R410A refrigerant.

    Both air conditioners and dehumidifiers share the same four critical components. They are:

    Thermoelectric dehumidifiers[edit]
    Thermoelectric dehumidifiers use a Peltier heat pump to cool a surface and condense water vapor from the air. The design is simpler and has the benefit of being quieter compared to a dehumidifier with a mechanical compressor. However, because of its relatively poor Coefficient of Performance, this design is mainly used for small dehumidifiers. Ice buildup may be a problem, similar to problems with refrigeration dehumidifiers.
