    The reset function is used to restart the Temperature Control System after an error condition has been detected and
    corrected.
    Reset the control by pushing the red reset button on the controller. After a reset, the control performs self diagnostics
    before normal operations begin. This takes approximately 10 minutes.

    FIGS. 4A and 4B show side and front elevational views, respectively, of a heating element utilized in accordance with aspects of the invention.

    FIG. 5 discloses a circuit diagram of the control system of a water heater in accordance with aspects of the invention.

    The specifics of the connections and operations of electronic controller 28 and heating elements 26 shown in FIGS. 5 and 6. Thermistor 44 is connected in a conventional manner through thermistor connectors 45 to electronic controller 28. Resistance heater 29 is also connected to heater control board 47 via relays 50 on heater control board 47. Electrical power is supplied to the system through power supply 48, which include fuses 49 and 49′ for deenergizing the system in the event of an amperage surge.

    Heater control board 47 preferably incorporates electronic control circuitry for controlling operation of the water heater, as described in more detail below. Such control circuitry may incorporate a number of electronic components, known to those of ordinary skill in the art, such as solid state transistors and accompanying biasing components, or one or more equivalent, programmable logic chips. The electronic control circuitry may also incorporate a programmable read only memory (PROM), random access memory (RAM) and a microprocessor.

    The arrangement and/or programming of these components may take any number of forms well known to those of ordinary skill in the art to accomplish operation of the water heater as described below. For example, specific programming of the type described herein may be obtained from Therm-O-Disc, Inc. and United Technologies Electronic Controls.

    When there is a call for hot water, hot water exits through outlet 24 and cold water is introduced through inlet 22. Thermistor sensors 44 detect the temperature of water within tank 16 by way of their being embedded in bases 27 at positions interior of the water tank side wall. The temperatures of bases 27 reflect the temperature of water in tank 16. Thermistors 44 then send temperature information, typically in the form of an electrical signal, to controller 28. Controller 28 is programmed with predetermined set point temperatures to determine the temperature at which controller 28 energizes element 26. The predetermined set point can be made to be variable if desired. When the temperature of the water within tank 16 decreases to that predetermined set point, controller 28 detects such temperature information received from thermistor sensor 44 and energizes element 26. Element 26 continues in the energized state to heat the water until temperature information received from sensor 44 indicates that the water temperature has reached a second predetermined set point.

    FIG. 6 shows a ladder diagram of the control system of a water heater in accordance with aspects of the invention.

    For all intents and purposes, all of the water flow that goes through a tankless water heater actually flows through the heat exchanger. As mentioned above, the heat exchanger houses the heating elements, and in addition, provides a sealed vessel for water to flow through as it is heated from cold to hot. This "exchange" of cold to hot is where this part of the heater manufacturing derives it's name. The heat exchanger is typically comprised of two or more cylinders that are slightly larger than the heating elements and welded together with tubes that allow for water to progressively pass from the first (leading) heating element to the last (trailing) heating element and get successively hotter. Depending on the heating capacity of the elements, and how many of them, the water will enter through the inlet side of the heater at one temperature, pass through the heat exchanger and exit through the outlet side of the heater at a higher temperature achieving a specific "temperature differential" commonly know as "Delta T" (ΔT) in scientific terminology, specifically chemistry. This temperature differential is the key to selecting the proper heater for your home or application and is discussed at length in the "How do I know which one is best for my home?" section.

    There are essentially only a handful of situations that will indicate your water heater isn’t working properly: it will make strange, loud noises, there will be no hot water, the water will be too hot, or the hot water will not last long enough.

    Now that you’ve got a basic understanding of how your water heater works, some alarm bells might be going off as to what may be causing the problem.

    Water heater making loud noise:
    This is almost certainly due to sediment buildup in the bottom of the tank, and can be fixed by draining the water heater. Simply open the drain valve and drain until the water comes out clear. This is actually routine maintenance, and should be done at least once a year. (Applies to both gas and electric water heaters).

    This invention relates to an electric water heater, particularly to an electric water heater having an electronic control system that greatly improves manufacturing costs, reduces warranty expense and operating efficiencies.

    BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
    Typical electric water heaters are constructed with one or two electric-powered heating elements to heat water in the water tank, depending on the size and utilization of the water heater. Each manufacturing element utilizes an electromechanical thermostat mounted onto the side of the tank at the point where the screw cap of the element connects to the side of the water tank. There are a number of disadvantages associated with such constructions.

    Current electromechanical thermostats use bimetal technology for actuation of a set of contacts that either energize or deenergize the heating element. Such bimetal technology is comparatively imprecise and the response time to temperature changes in the water tank are relatively slow, thereby reducing water heater efficiency.

    Another significant problem with present construction is the difficulty of protecting against “dry fired” elements. “Dry fire” occurs when power is applied to a heating element without water surrounding the element. Such dry firing rapidly causes damage to the heating element, thereby sharply reducing its useful life span. In most instances, dry firing can cause immediate failure of the element.

    In one aspect, the water heater of the invention includes a water container; an element located to heat water in the water container; a sensor located to sense temperature proximate the element; and a controller connected to the element and the sensor, the controller being capable of disengaging the element in the event that a sensed temperature over a predetermined time interval is greater than a predetermined temperature difference, wherein there is substantially no degradation of the element within the predetermined time interval.

    In another aspect of the invention, there is a water heater that includes a water container; an element located to heat water in the water container; a sensor located to sense temperature of water in the water container; and a controller connected to the element and the sensor, the controller being capable of comparing temperature information received from the sensor with a predetermined temperature and energizing the element based on the comparison.

    a controller connected to said element, said second element, said sensor and said second sensor, said controller programmed to 1) compare temperature information received from said sensor would be predetermined temperature and energizing said element based on said comparison, 2) compare temperature information received from said second sensor to a preset temperature and energizing said second element if a sensed temperature is less than a second preset temperature which is less than said preset temperature, 3) deenergize said element and said second element when temperature information received from said sensor and said second sensor reach said preset temperature, and 4) prevent energizing of said second element unless said element has been previously energized without a subsequent interruption of power to said controller and the temperature of water sensed by said second sensor is greater than or equal to the temperature of water sensed by said sensor.

    There are three primary things that must be working correctly to produce hot water from a Seisco Tankless. The control board; the temperature sensors; and the heating elements. If you receive a code 122 that indicates an overtemperature condition, first reset the limit switch, then isolate the component causing the over temperature condition. Avoid the temptation to replace the limit switch, the cause is almost always elsewhere in the heater. Likewise an element code is often the result of a failed temperture sensor. Whenever your heater is malfuntioning, perform the complete troubleshooting procedure to ensure all components of the heater are working correctly. On a new installation, turn the water off after manufacturing purging all of the air from the unit and wait a few minutes before activating the power the first time. The unit will not activate if you turn the power on with the hot water already flowing.

    Not Enough Hot Water
    If you have insufficient hot water, first you must determine if your unit is adequately sized for the current conditions. If the amp meter is reading the maximum rating at all elements and your hot water is insufficient, you must either reduce the flow rate at the fixtures or increase the size of your Seisco. Techniques to reduce flow include manufacturing flow-restricting aerators for faucets and low-flow showerheads. Contact Seisco customer service for assistance. Tub fillers should be limited to a maximum of 1/2" plumbing line when sizing a single Seisco whole-house tankless. Temporarily restrict flow with the ball shutoff valve to verify a sizing issue. If this is a new installation, verify that the water is flowing in the correct direction in the inlet and out the outlet. If jumpers are required on the circuit board, verify correct installation.

    Fluctuating Temperatures
    Primary reason for fluctuating temperatures is under-sizing. See Not Enough Hot Water. If heater is adequately sized perform the complete troubleshooting procedure to isolate issues with the circuit board, sensors and heat elements. Verify that there is no reverse flow. A spring type check valve should be installed on the outlet if the plumbing design could result in reverse flow. If this is a new installation, does issue only occur at certain locations. Pressure balancing valves may need to be adjusted to provide adequate hot water. Scald prevention devices may also require adjustment. Verify that the water is flowing in the correct direction in the inlet and out the outlet. If jumpers are required on the circuit board, verify correct installation.

    At times water can be leaking out around the faucet. This isn't a problem that you should worry about unless the leaking is constant. There are times when hot water expands because of the pressure caused manufacturing by heating it. This pressure causes the water to have to go somewhere and dripping out of the faucet alleviates that pressure. If the leaking is constant, then there is more serious problem with a valve.

    If this is the case, check the valve and tighten the nuts on the valve. If this does not stop the problem, then it needs to be replaced.

    Hot Water is Scalding
    The temperature of the water manufacturing can be elevated at times due to pressures, and through time. Usually these are set by the technician that installed it or directly from the factory. Hot water should never be set above 120 degrees Fahrenheit.

    Water Pressure is Too Low

    There are several modes of operation, the one we used for a number of years was hybrid. This seems to use resistive electric (normal electric hot water heating) and heat pump hot water heating together. Mostly imo it seemed to use the heat pump to keep hot water hot once it was electrically heated.

    Our unit is out of warranty and one of the heating elements failed. We called and got service, but replacing the element didn't fix our problem.

    While waiting for repair, I set the unit to heat pump only mode. Surprisingly, while not perfect, it has been creating sufficient hot water for a family of 5 over about a month now. Creating hot water solely via heat pump (no resistive hot water, as an error occurs which causes the unit to beep and no hot water to be produced).

    I'm still negotiating with the repair company to see if they will at least credit my payment toward a new device purchase (the repair was done by a box store service department). If I can't replace my approximately 2 year old unit, my intention is to see how long and well the heat pump only solution works. I've been a bit surprised that it has been at all useful.

    Looks like a magnetic reed switch. Most instant hot water systems use either a Hall or magnetic reed switch to sense water flow to turn the heaters on. They will have a section were theres a magnet that moves with water flow. manufacturing Check wheather the reed switch has continuity when a magnet is but by it. Then check wheather it closes circuit when put back where it was originaly mounted, with water flowing through it. MAKE sure this unit is isolated from the power supply when doing these tests.

    1. Make sure upper and lower access doors and insulation are
    properly in place
    2. Check element circuits for resistance of 5 - 25 ohms
    3. Replace element if necessary and reset control system

    If, however, the temperature differential is less than five degrees, then heater control board 47 energizes bottom element 26 to heat the water in tank 16 until it reaches the temperature set on temperature adjust dial 42.

    If the temperature of temperature adjust dial 42 is less than 110° F., then the top element 26 remains off. Otherwise, heater control board 47 checks the temperature at thermistor 44 in manufacturing upper element 26. If the temperature of thermistor 44 in upper element 26 is equal to the temperature of dial 42 minus 5° F., then heater control board 47 does not energize upper element 26 until the temperature at thermistor 44 in upper element 26 is less than the turn on temperature (which is typically the temperature set on temperature adjust dial 42 minus some increment such as 5°) minus 5° F. Heater control board 47 then energizes top element 26.

    Using a Phillips head screw driver, unscrew the triacs from the heat sink to the right of the board. Take care that the screws are not lost, they will needed for the new board.
    Using a Phillips head screw driver, remove the four mounting screws from the board, be ready to support the board as you remove the screws. Be careful not to get the white heat sink compound on your clothing, as it is difficult to wash out.

    Place heat sink compound on the triacs being manufacturing careful not to bend the leads. Be sure to get a thin coating covering the entire back of the triacs, if you don’t, they will burn out as soon as you power up the heater. To maximize thermal conduction, it is advisable to clean the backs of the triacs with alcohol before applying the heat sink compound.

    Loosely mount the board to the heater with at least two Phillip head screws. Screw the triacs down to the heat sink; be sure they are flat against the heat sink. Don’t twist the head off of the screw, if you feel any resistance, back the screw out and try again.
    After the triacs manufacturing are snug, tighten down the board screws (8 in.-lbs.). Don't tighten them so much that you bend the board.
    Replace the main power wires into the screw lugs and tighten. If the wires are stranded, make sure all strands are in the lug to avoid possible shorting of the control board.
    Replace the control and element wires (see schematic inside the protective cover).
    Using the Matching Procedure above, match the control to the thermistors and place the heater back in service.

    Heating of the water in tank 16 then continues in a conventional manner until the turn off temperature of temperature adjust dial 42 is achieved.

    Electronic control board controls the heating elements and monitors water temperature in the water heater.

    I think some one mis informed you, the normal temp on any water heater from the factory is 120, it should not go above that for reasons of sevear burns, as far as it't smart part it's just a name, you will lose a couple of degrees just comming torm the tank to the faucets, the water heater will allways keep the temp in the tank at what ever it is set at, it doesn't have the brains or computer to manufacturing know what time of day it is but when the cold water comes in to the tank it comes thru a dip tube that goes to aprox 1 inch from the bottom of the tank, if you take a long shower and do not have a energy efficant shower head you can use up to 5 gals, per min of hot water where an energy efficant one only uses 2.5 or less and still has the same pressure at the shower head, the temp in your water heater tries to stay at the setting it is at depending on how much is used at one time meaning washing machine, filling tub or dishwasher at the same time, it lets more cold in as the hot goes out and as you know it can only heat up so much at a time and the cold water is just going across the bottom of the tank, so the name is just that no diffrent then any other water heater unless you went to a tankless water heater.

    Disconnect electrical power to the water heater before installing this part. Wear work gloves to protect your hands.
