    During operation, a voltage is applied across the OLED such that the anode is positive with respect to the cathode. Anodes are picked based upon the quality of their optical transparency, electrical conductivity, and chemical stability.[30] A current of electrons flows through the device from cathode to anode, as electrons are injected into the LUMO of the organic layer at the cathode and withdrawn from the HOMO at the anode. This latter process may also be described as the injection of electron holes into the HOMO. Electrostatic forces bring the electrons and the holes towards each other and they recombine forming an exciton, a bound state of the electron and hole. This happens closer to the emissive layer, because in organic semiconductors holes are generally more mobile than electrons. The decay of this excited state results in a relaxation of the energy levels of the electron, accompanied by emission of radiation whose frequency is in the visible region. The frequency of this radiation depends on the band gap of the material, in this case the difference in energy between the HOMO and LUMO.

    In one corner is LCD (liquid crystal display). It is by far the most common type of display in all kinds of tech. If you see a TV described as ‘LED’, it’s actually an LCD display, albeit one that uses LEDs as its lighting source.

    Then there’s OLED (organic LED), which is used in high-end phones like the Samsung Galaxy S7 and high-end TVs like the Sony A1. That’s a completely different technology. Some people say OLED is the future, but is it really that much better than a good LED LCD display? We’re going to look into how these display techs differ, what they’re good for, and how they work.

    The display market is all about price and popularity – it always is – and that's exactly why, when talking about TV's future and new TV products, we must remember to do one thing: always forget the flagships.

    Thin and light TVs are easier to move around the home and set up. Aesthetically they also look more stylish in the living room. Even more importantly, they also help people save money. Because OLED displays do not require conventional LED LCD backlighting, they require less power to run than an equivalently-sized LCD panel. With power costs being a major concern for many Australians households, this is a major advantage of the technology.

    Depending on the panel that you get, OLED TVs can also offer additional features to enhance the experience yet further. Panasonic’s recent 4K Ultra HD OLED, for example, has both Hollywood Tuning, which adjusts TV settings in order to replicate the visual experience as designed by film directors for the cinema itself, as well as a 4K gaming mode - all the more critical now, as the quality of gaming reaches that of cinema.

    The downside to OLED, if you could call it that, is that it costs more than an LCD TV; you won’t be able to walk into your local electronics and walk out with a TV and change with $1000. But OLED is more about quality and the cinematic experience, and for film or gaming enthusiasts that do care about picture quality, what is important is that OLED TVs have reached a price point that is reasonable, and provide pinnacle quality that even the best LCD screens cannot achieve. That is why OLEDs can be expected to become the default choice for home entertainment over the next decade.

    Contrast on an OLED display is way higher. When an OLED screen goes black, its pixels actually produce no light whatsoever. You can’t get darker than that. That means you get an infinite contrast ratio, although how great it looks will depend on how bright the LEDs can go when they’re lit up.

    To compensate, many LED LCD TVs offer a “dynamic” contrast mode, which has the TV altering the backlight level according to the image on screen. It’s not the best solution for movies, because there the variance in screen brightness is much less predictable.

    The best LED LCD TVs are called direct LED displays. Here, the LEDs sit right behind the LCD panel rather than to the side of it, giving a screen greater control over how bright certain areas of a screen are. You’ll find this tech in some higher-end TVs. However, its effectiveness varies.

    Unlike OLED, Direct LED-lit TVs still don’t have pixel-level control over light levels. Instead, a display has ‘zones’ or groups of LEDs than can be dimmed. It can be extremely useful for doing things like blacking-out the bars you see when watching a 21:9 cinema aspect movie on a 16:9 TV, but generally isn’t as good at dealing with more complicated tasks.

    That’s a tough one. In terms of sheer numbers, LCD is definitely winning. It’s been around for much longer and it’s cheaper to make, which gives it a major head start in market saturation.

    If you’re dealing with a limited budget, whether you’re buying a phone, a monitor, a laptop or a TV, you’ll almost certainly end up with an LCD-based screen. OLED, meanwhile, remains a more luxury proposition.

    But LCD’s dominance is slowly being chipped away. OLED tech is gaining momentum. Already it’s taken over the best phones, and OLED is making big waves in the TV world.

    Which is better? Even if you take money out of the equation, it really comes down to personal taste. Neither OLED nor LCD LED is perfect. Some would extol OLED’s skill in handling darkness, and its lighting precision. Others would prefer LCD’s ability to go brighter, and maintain colours at bright levels.

    If those weren't enough OLEDs for you, Panasonic presented its 77-inch EZ1000, Philips its 65-inch 9-series OLED TV, and even thought-to-be-past-it Toshiba popped-up at IFA with the 65-inch X97 OLED TV. And all the while, the 'OLED tunnel' – a fixture on the stand of the sole OLED display manufacturer LG's stand at trade shows for the past year or so – was wowing attendees.


    Experimental research has proven that the properties of the anode, specifically the anode/hole transport layer (HTL) interface topography plays a major role in the efficiency, performance, and lifetime of organic light emitting diodes. Imperfections in the surface of the anode decrease anode-organic film interface adhesion, increase electrical resistance, and allow for more frequent formation of non-emissive dark spots in the OLED material adversely affecting lifetime. Mechanisms to decrease anode roughness for ITO/glass substrates include the use of thin films and self-assembled monolayers. Also, alternative substrates and anode materials are being considered to increase OLED performance and lifetime. Possible examples include single crystal sapphire substrates treated with gold (Au) film anodes yielding lower work functions, operating voltages, electrical resistance values, and increasing lifetime of OLEDs.[33]

    OLED 4K TV technology is fairly untested, and therefore unknown. This gives rise to some concern – especially when remembering what happened with early Plasma TVs (then called gas plasma display technology). It was not pretty. Early plasma models developed burn in easily, and the green phosphors did not last long enough.

    LED 4K TVs use long lasting LED backlights (edge lit or full array) and tried and true LCD front panels which are composed of twisting crystals. So this technology should last as long as 60,000 viewing hours; which when you break it down to 4 hours a day of viewing is 41 years. The LED bulbs will fade over time, however, and after many years the screen uniformity will get worse. And just in case your curious, the LED backlights cannot be economically replaced.

    Judging by our IFA 2017 hands-on, the main reason to wait till 2018 for the 9 Series is the P5 picture processor. Previous Philips picture processors have aimed to improve four key characteristics: sharpness, colour, contrast and motion. According to Philips, they've achieved a 50 per cent improvement on each of those processes in this new TV. Meanwhile, a fifth level called “Source Perfection” has been added, which is aimed at addressing the big thing that's changed in TV viewing over the past few years: streaming.

    In order to establish a set of standards which a TV must be able to hit in order to be considered HDR Ready, a new ‘Ultra HD Premium‘ label has been introduced. You can read more about this in our detailed guide, but for our purposes, it’s worth noting that both LCD and OLED TVs have been awarded the UHD Premium label. That means that both display technologies are capable of producing cutting edge picture quality, despite their various differences. The battle is therefore far from over.

    QLED TVs aren’t susceptible to burn-in.
    The same issue is at play with OLED TVs because the compounds that light up do degrade over time. If you burn a pixel long and hard enough, you will cause it to dim prematurely and ahead of the rest of the pixels, creating a dark impression. However, in reality, this is not very likely to cause a problem for anyone — you’d have to abuse the TV intentionally in order to achieve this result. Even the “bug” (logo graphic) that certain channels use disappears often enough or is made clear so as to avoid causing burn-in issues. You’d have to watch ESPN all day every day (for many days) at the brightest possible setting to cause a problem, and even then it still isn’t very likely.

    QLED TVs are just LED TVs that use quantum dots to enhance performance in key picture quality areas. Samsung, for instance, claims its QLED TVs offer brightness levels that meet and exceed any competing TV technology, offer better black levels than other LED TVs, and can reproduce more colors than LED TVs without quantum dots.

    There's also the factor that OLED lacks the support of the world's #1 TV brand, Samsung, which is instead concentrating on its own tweak to existing LCD technology, QLED. At IFA, Samsung expanded its QLED range, adding a 55-inch and 65-inch Q8F, but it wasn't the only one with new QLEDs. TCL announced its 85-inch Private Theatre XESS X6, and even insisted that at 60,000 hours, the colour lifespan of the X6 lasts two times longer than a 'regular' OLED TV.

    "TCL, Hisense and Samsung, who all rank within the top five vendors, continue to resist OLED technology and are choosing to push existing LCD sets further," said Bryant. That's some pretty awesome marketing muscle, globally speaking, and it's coalescing behind the QLED Alliance created by the three brands.

    Last year we heard from Sony and other manufacturers that there were too many problems with production of OLED technology in terms of reliability and high costs. We believe this was also the case with Samsung though they did not specifically state this when we interviewed them. These reliability issues combined with higher costs of ramping up production has most manufacturers treading sand to improve 4K UHD technology by widening the color gamut and employing either Quantum Dot or a similar film technology (Nano-Crystal and QLED in Samsung's case) to enhance and solidify color.

    "While Samsung, the world's largest TV vendor, and its large QLED alliance partners continue to resist the technology, and other vendors push it forward with dual OLED and LCD strategies, LCD will remain the go to screen technology for much of the market going forward," said Bryant.

    How do you decide? Stop reading this and go to a shop to check it out for yourself. A shop floor isn’t the best indication of ultimate picture quality, but it will give you a good idea of what your priorities are. Whether you ultimately side with LCD or OLED, you can take comfort in the fact that both technologies have matured massively, making this a relatively safe time to invest.

    not an emissive display technology, like plasma, OLED, or even your old cathode ray tube (CRT) TV in the basement. Quantum dots don’t directly emit the colors you see; they’re spread on a piece of film that acts almost as a filter within an LED TV panel. LED backlights beam through this film, the light is refined to an ideal color temperature, and from there, brightness and color are significantly enhanced.

    If quantum dots produced light, QLED could be called an emissive display — but they don’t.
    But TV enthusiasts have been hoping for a different kind of QLED TV, one in which individual quantum dots can be turned on and off with electricity like an OLED — no need for a backlight system, and no LCD panel involved. If the quantum dots were producing the light, then we could call QLED an emissive display technology – at present, however, it is not.

    WHAT IS OLED?

    OLED stands for organic light-emitting diode. Very simply put, OLEDs are made with organic compounds that light up when fed electricity – hence the term emissive display. A single OLED is the size of one pixel, so it takes millions of them lighting up and shutting off independently to fill your TV screen. Because of this flexibility, when an OLED TV’s pixels are shut off, they are completely off, and appear completely black. While QLED TVs can be made very thin, OLED TVs can be made even thinner, and even flexible.

    Indium tin oxide (ITO) is commonly used as the anode material. It is transparent to visible light and has a high work function which promotes injection of holes into the HOMO level of the organic layer. A typical conductive layer may consist of PEDOT:PSS[31] as the HOMO level of this material generally lies between the work function of ITO and the HOMO of other commonly used polymers, reducing the energy barriers for hole injection. Metals such as barium and calcium are often used for the cathode as they have low work functions which promote injection of electrons into the LUMO of the organic layer.[32] Such metals are reactive, so they require a capping layer of aluminium to avoid degradation.

    There’s a new kind of TV in town, and it’s called QLED. Samsung coined and trademarked the term, announcing the first QLED TVs at CES , but it isn’t keeping that acronym entirely for itself. Sources at Samsung tell Digital Trends they would like to see other companies adopt the QLED moniker for their quantum LED TVs, too. To prove it, the South Korean electronics giant forged a partnership with Chinese manufacturers Hisense and TCL, announcing a QLED Alliance in late April 2017. As you may have surmised, an alliance infers an enemy, and in this case, that would be OLED. Sounds like it’s time for a QLED vs. OLED TV battle!
    Let's go over some basics first. Yes, there's no doubt that OLED technology got a massive push at IFA: Sony unleashed a 77-inch version of its A1 OLED TV, Loewe its Bild 3 and Bild 4 OLED TVs, and Bang & Olufsen its Eclipse TV.

    When it comes to capable brightness, QLED TVs have a considerable advantage. LED TVs were already good at getting extremely bright, but the addition of quantum dots allows them to get even brighter. Because of this, QLED TVs claim superior “color volume,” meaning they are able to make all colors in the available spectrum brighter without losing saturation. QLED TV makers also claim they are better for HDR content because spectral highlights in images – the glint of light reflecting off a lake or a shiny car, for instance – are more powerful and more easily visible.

    Currently, only LG and Sony sell OLED TVs in the US, and they all have the same picture quality. Some manufacturers like Philips and Panasonic have produced some OLED TVs that use LG panels, but these aren't sold in North America.

    Our recommendations above are what we think are currently the best OLED TVs to buy for most people. We factor in the price (a cheaper TV wins over a pricier one if the difference isn't worth it), feedback from our visitors and availability (no TVs that are difficult to find or almost out of stock everywhere).

    If you would like to do the work of choosing yourself, here is the list of all our reviews of OLED TVs. Be careful not to get too caught up in the details. While no TV is perfect, most TVs are great enough to please almost everyone, and the differences are often not noticeable unless you really look for them.

    OLED displays are made by placing thin films of organic (carbon based) materials between two conductors. When electrical current is applied, light is emitted. OLED displays are emissive and unlike LCDs, do not require a backlight (unlike LCDs). OLED TV panels offers several advantages over LCDs:

    Faster refresh rate, better contrast (true blacks) and better color reproduction
    Better form factor - OLED enables much thinner panels
    Better viewing angle - almost 180 degrees
    Efficiency - in an OLED display, only the lit pixels draw power, unlike in an LCD.)
    OLED panels can potentially be made flexible and/or transparent - think rollable TVs!

    Perhaps the biggest shock at IFA was the now Foxconn-backed Sharp's announcement that it plans to sell the world's first 8K TV in Europe in 2018.

    So what is driving that massive swing in demand? Traditionally OLED televisions have priced themselves out of the market, with LCD displays being a far more affordable option for most Australians. However, the price in OLED displays has now reached the point where they are affordable enough to fit into the budgets of people looking for a superior viewing experience.

    There are 5 areas where OLEDs, as technology, completely outperforms what LCD displays can achieve, and these come together to result in panels that offer better visual fidelity for regular television viewing, home cinema, and gaming

    Part of its historic AQUOS Series – which once saw the birth of the first LCD TVS – Sharp will put a 7680 x 4320 pixel resolution on a 70-inch LCD TV in March. With the 2020 Tokyo Olympics approaching, which host broadcaster NHK plans to air in 8K, Sharp wants to get its act together.

    But higher resolutions are only one part of the roadmap: As TVs become bigger ands better, there's a trend towards hiding them altogether. Look at Samsung's The Frame line-up of 'hidden' TVs that display works of art and photographs, provides some evidence for that.

    Even though they're not TVs, ultra-short-throw laser projector at IFA 2017 from like Epson's EH-LS100 can put a 130-inch image on a wall from 6cm, while LG's Pro Beam HF85JA can project a 100-inch image from 12cm.

    Since then, the two companies have gone in opposite directions: Samsung’s TV division abandoned the OLED game while LG doubled down and threw money at the technology. In 2015, LG pumped over $600m into production sites.

    It was a risky move, but LG’s investments have paid off. OLED is now better than ever, and prices have come right down. We’re still not looking at the bargain basement prices of some LCD TVs, so you can forget about OLED in your spare bedroom. But now you can find a 55-inch OLED TV for under £1,800, which is in line with some of the premium LCD rivals.

    The OLED momentum is strong. At CES 2017, LG announced that it had 10 models of OLED TV, all of them 4K and HDR compatible. And LG’s OLED panels are now good enough that other manufacturers are buying them: Panasonic, Sony and Philips are taking tentative steps into the OLED pool, all using LG’s panels.

    Samsung is resolutely sticking to LCD, however. The company has had immense success with its LCD TVs, and much of that is down to the fact that it is able to offer high-end tech for less money than its OLED rivals.

    Lower cost is one of the main benefits of LCD displays, across all fields. You’ll find high-quality LCD screens in devices that cost (relatively-speaking) peanuts, such as the IPS panel of the Motorola Moto E, a phone that costs well under £100, if you shop around.

    The lower cost of LCD is also what has manufacturing made 4K TVs so affordable so quickly. You can buy a decent 4K TV for around £500 these days, but at this price range you’re guaranteed to find LCD. Will OLED ever get this cheap? Probably, but not any time soon.

    As electrons and holes are fermions with half integer spin, an exciton may either be in a singlet state or a triplet state depending on how the spins of the electron and hole have been combined. Statistically three triplet excitons will be formed for each singlet exciton. Decay from triplet states (phosphorescence) is spin forbidden, increasing the timescale of the transition and limiting the internal efficiency of fluorescent devices. Phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes make use of spin–orbit interactions to facilitate intersystem crossing between singlet and triplet states, thus obtaining emission from both singlet and triplet states and improving the internal efficiency.

    A leading international AV consultancy has reported that the future of TV is stacked heavily in favor of Quantum Dot LED (QLED) rather than OLED technology, due to LG simply not being able to make enough OLED TVs to satisfy demand and drive prices down.

    The effect we’ve come to know as burn-in stems from the days of the boxy CRT TV, when prolonged display of a static image would cause that image to appear to “burn” into the screen. What was actually taking place then was the phosphors that coated the back of the TV screen would glow for extended periods of time without any rest, causing the phosphors to wear out and create the appearance of a burned-in image. We think this should be called “burn out.” But … whatever.

    A 10.5G manufacturing facility, for instance, lets you get up to eight 65-inch screens manufacturing vertically from a single sheet of glass, versus just three from 8.5G production lines.

    The best OLED TV we've reviewed is the LG C7 4k WebOS TV. It has the best picture quality in a dark room we've tested and it can be found at a reasonable price for a high-end TV.

    Much like in previous years, all OLED TVs offer the same picture quality. This means that the cheapest OLED TV will offer the same beautiful contrast as models multiple times more expensive. It's more versatile than LED TVs in the same price range too. It has a wide viewing angle for larger living rooms, its input lag is low for gaming, and it has low motion blur and great uniformity, making it a great choice for watching sports.

    Overall, while it's not the brightest TV around, most people will be more than happy with the LG C7, and its great picture quality and versatility make it a top choice in almost every category.

    From a business/profit perspective, the DSCC’s research states that OLED TV panels aren’t expected to get into positive earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) until 2019, whereas the manufacturing two predominant types of QLED technology - QD Enhanced Film and, especially, QD Color Filter - are positioned to deliver much stronger production volume increases and resulting faster falling costs in the period between now and 2021.

    Finally, DSCC believes that the most affordable, easy to make ‘Color Filter’ types of QLED TVs have significantly stronger potential for reducing power consumption, increasing brightness and improving viewing angles in the next few years than OLED screens.

    In terms of overall performance, both OLED and LCD are capable of reproducing fantastic picture quality. The big TV feature of 2017 is High Dynamic Range (HDR). This is shorthand for a number of improvements that allow for the retention of detail in darker parts of the image, better colour reproduction, deeper blacks and brighter whites. Basically, a wider range for colour and contrast.

    LG and Bang & Olufsen have revealed their new OLED television called the BeoVision Eclipse, their first TV produced in a partnership announced last year. The BeoVision is a 4K TV and 450 watt music system that features a 3-channel sound bar with integrated internet radio and music streaming. The TV claims to deliver “absolute black and manufacturing infinite contrast ratio” and high dynamic range (HDR) as you’d expect from LG’s much lauded OLED panels. It also features a motorized floor manufacturing stand that can move the TV around the room soundlessly at the press of a manufacturing button — making the TV adjustable to your position if you’re fidgety or move around a lot. The Eclipse can also be mounted on a motorized or manual wall bracket, and controlled with the BeoRemote One BT remote.

    Adaptability is one of the major selling points of the Eclipse. It comes with LG’s webOS 3.5, enabling users to access and customize streaming services like Netflix, YouTube, Deezer, and features built-in support for Spotify Connect, Chromecast, and AirPlay audio as well as simple Bluetooth streaming. The speaker itself is physically customizable, with choices of aluminum or different colored fabrics. It can also be expanded to support a multi-channel surround sound system by adding Bang & Olufsen’s BeoLab loudspeakers, with the TV’s speaker then acting as the center channel.

    has been a big year for TV tech. Ultra HD, or 4K, continues to be adopted as the standard resolution in the AV world. High dynamic range (HDR) is no longer the next big thing that’s coming soon – it’s here now.

    The same can be said of smartphone screens, which continue to reach dazzling levels of sharpness thanks to increased resolutions and better pixel-per-inch densities.

    But for all the new manufacturing features coming our way, it’s worth taking a minute to consider an old battle going on between two display types. These two, broad kinds of display can be found across monitors, TVs, mobile phones, cameras and pretty much everything else with a screen.

    As for input lag, LG has considerably improved its OLED TVs in this area, making them a real option for gamers who play fast-paced first-person shooter games, but we’ve not been able to test competing OLED TVs from other manufacturers yet. We do know that OLEDs aren’t an inherently bad choice for gamers, but which models will have the least input lag remains to be seen. It’s also hard to rank OLED against its QLED competition because the input lag on QLED TVs varies so greatly from model to model.
