    The arguments against curved TVs…
    1. The curve exaggerates reflections
    If you’ve ever stood in front of one of those trick mirrors at a fun park, you’ll know that shaped glass can do weird things to reflections. It’s the same deal with a curved TV. Anything bright in your room – especially direct light sources opposite your TV – has its reflection on a curved screen stretched and distorted across a wider area of the screen than would occur with a flat TV. So if you buy a curved TV, you’ll probably find you need to introduce some extra light control elements to your viewing room.

    2. The curve limits viewing angles
    Yes, yes, we know we had viewing angles in the Pros section as well. But hear us out.

    The Case For The Prosecution
    Appealing though these curved TV positives might seem, though, as noted before they’re only really effective on very large TVs. Another limitation is that you only fully benefit from some of the curved screen pluses if you’re sitting in the right place - namely right opposite the centre of the screen, and close enough to ensure that the edges of the screen fill your peripheral vision. Needless to say this isn’t especially compatible with typical family life - though it’s worth adding that the bigger the curved screen you buy, the bigger the viewing ‘sweet spot’ becomes.

    I said earlier that one of the advantages of curved TVs is that they don’t lose colour and contrast as much as flat TVs if you watch them from down the side. However, in practice watching a curved screen from an angle of more than 30 degrees doesn’t really work, since the picture’s shape starts to look distractingly distorted. Sit far enough down the side, in fact, and the edge of the TV can curve in front of the picture, leaving you looking at part of the TV’s back end!

    The White House is bracing for a tax reform fight, with Democrats already on guard against any plan rewarding the rich (US president Trump now denies this will happen: “The rich will not be gaining at all with this plan,” he said on Sept. 13). On the other end of the spectrum (and the country), Silicon Valley congressional representative Ro Khanna is introducing his own plan: a $1.4 trillion tax credit that could move the US closer to something resembling a universal basic income (UBI).
    3. You need to be in the sweetspot to get most benefits
    If you want to get the maximum impact from the immersive and depth-enhancement elements of the curve, you need to be sat right opposite the centre of the screen – and ideally at the perfect distance from the screen too.

    To be fair, the idea that you need to be sat in a very specific ‘sweet spot’ to watch a curved TV hasn’t proved as fraught an issue as we’d once feared, since the 70-degree effective viewing arc provides enough room for multiple people to watch a curved TV without the curve actively upsetting their experience. But at the same time, the area within which you need to sit to fully appreciate the curve’s benefits is in still quite small.

    4. Curved screens need to be big
    Our experience to date is that the effectiveness of curved screens is directly proportional to their size. With all of the 55-inch models we’ve tested the curve’s benefits felt pretty minimal, while some of the problems – particularly the sweet spot issues – were more noticeable. With the 65-inch models it’s easier to appreciate the picture benefits while feeling less aggrieved by the negatives (except for the reflections one). Bigger screens support more viewers more easily too.

    Despite enjoying the 65-inch models, though, our feeling is that the curve will only potentially feel of significant benefit at truly colossal sizes of 70 inches or more.

    5. Curved screens make awkward wall flowers
    While Samsung does do wall mounts for its curved TVs, our impression is that curved screens look rather awkward when hung up. Certainly they stick out a long way from the wall at their extremities, flying in the face of the whole ‘hang on the wall telly’ experience flat screens were originally designed for. Unless you live in a light house or windmill…

    I’ve never really understood the appeal of curved TVs. Over the years televisions have gotten thinner and thinner, meaning they take up less space despite their screen sizes having gotten impressively big.

    Khanna, whose district includes the headquarters of tech’s biggest companies, co-sponsored the Grow American Incomes Now Act (GAIN) Act this week to massively expand of the earned income tax credit (EITC), the federal tax credit for low- and moderate-income workers. In broad strokes, it lays out the blueprint to start assembling an American UBI, a minimum payment for all US citizens (at least those who work).
    Khanna’s bill, sponsored with Ohio Democrat senator Sherrod Brown, would nearly double the EITC for families with qualifying family of two seeing an increase to $10,783. Childless workers would see their maximum credit rise six-fold from $510 to $3,000. The bill, which is expected to cost $1.4 trillion over 10 years, would be paid for by taxes on financial transactions and top earners. All of GAIN’s benefits would flow to poor and working class workers as the credits phase out as incomes top $75,940 a year for families of three or more.
    “I think it’s going to be our party’s answer to Donald Trump on taxes,” Khanna told the San Jose Mercury News. “While he’s proposing tax cuts for the investor class, we’re proposing support for the working and middle class.”
    The EITC, introduced in 1975, has won plaudits from liberals and conservatives as a cost-effective way of lifting millions out of poverty each year (only social security has a bigger impact). Studies of the cash transfer program show it boosts employment, increases student achievement, and cuts crime, delivering billions of dollars in social benefits (although some have derided the fraud in the program).
    Khanna is pitching the GAIN Act as a way to put cash back in the pockets of the poor and middle class who missed out on nearly all the nation’s productivity growth since 1979. Except for the highest-paid workers, wages have been stagnant for almost 30 years (pdf). Millions of poor and middle class have been thrown into short-term jobs with low wages and uncertain hours that account for almost all new net US employment in recent years. Khanna argues his bill would effectively compensate these workers for wage stagnation, as well as make up the decades of losses for the bottom 20% of earners.

    4. You feel like pictures have more depth

    The first thing many people say when they first try out a curved TV is that the picture feels 3D. This is because the curved screen makes the image exist on multiple depth planes – with a physical foreground and background - like a 3D image (or the world around us, come to that). So important is this depth attribute that Samsung uses processing on its curved TVs to make images marry up more effectively with the curved nature of the screen.

    5. You can enjoy a richer contrast performance

    Although I haven’t yet seen a wide enough variety of curved TVs to feel confident about confirming this point, the argument goes that since curved screens focus their light towards your seating position rather than scattering it around a wider area like flat TVs do, they can deliver almost twice as much perceived contrast.

    That leaves Samsung as the only brand selling curved TVs in 2017, and it's not backing off. Among its premium QLED TVs a spokesman told CNET there will be an "equal proportion" of curved and flat TVs. The flagship Q9 series will be flat instead of curved this year, the step-down Q8 will be curved, and the Q7 series will have both flat and curved options. Samsung says the price difference between curved and flat TVs varies model by model, but hasn't yet released all of its official pricing.

    "From our point of view it's a question of choice for consumers," the Samsung spokesman said via email. "Our after purchase consumer research indicates that some consumers note a more immersive experience, some prefer its aesthetic appearance and some refer to both as being factors that led them to purchase a curved set."

    Both LG and Samsung declined to share specific curved vs. flat sales data with CNET, but Samsung says it has seen year-over-year growth in curved TV sales since they were introduced, especially in the 50-inch and larger size categories. No wonder it wants to keep the curve alive.

    Samsung's 65-inch curved TV uses depth enhancement processing to boost the effect of the curved screen.

    6. You can watch pictures from a wider viewing angle

    You probably think I’ve lost the plot with this one. Especially as viewing angle issues also appear in the Cons section of this article! But here’s the thing. As anyone who’s had to watch a normal LCD TV from the down the sides will know, colours lose saturation and contrast reduces massively when you’re not sat directly opposite the screen. Since curved TVs turn the edges of their images towards off-axis viewing positions, though, the usual colour and contrast reductions associated with such viewing positions are greatly reduced.

    A few months ago I did something extremely out of character: I went out and bought a TV without obsessively reading product reviews. I just drove to Walmart and purchased the nicest-looking TV in stock for $500. It was a curved Samsung. This manufacturing was an enormous mistake, and I should have just bought a Vizio E-Series. My wife Becky loudly reminds me of this mistake nearly every time we turn the TV on; she hates this product more than any other half-baked gadget I have forced into our lives. So I asked her to explain why, and she gave me this, which begins with what I can only describe as a vicious character assassination.

    When curved TVs were first being released, one of the arguments made in their favor was that the curve increased the amount of perceptible screen real estate. Therefore, a 55” curved TV would actually look bigger than a 55” flat screen. This is true, but only to a very, very small degree.

    We calculated the difference manufacturing by comparing two similar TVs: the Samsung UN55MU8000, and the Samsung UN55MU8500. Apart from the curved screen, the two share a similar design, and pretty much identical picture quality.

    We measured the screens and calculated the field of view for both TVs, assuming a seated position eight feet away from the TVs. The larger the FOV (field of view), the more the screen fills your vision.

    The result: The flat screen Samsung UN55MU8000 had a FOV of 28 degrees, and the curved Samsung UN55MU8500 had a FOV of 28.42 degrees. At that distance of eight feet, that means the MU8500’s curved 55” screen looks like a 55.8” screen – a very small difference, especially given how much more expensive a curved TV is.

    Winner: Curved. The difference is very minor though, so it's not worth the extra cost.

    Slight (very slight) improvement in immersion: You won’t get anything like theater quality immersion with a curved 4K TV but that extra fraction of a degree and extra inch of screen real estate we described above do technically add to the overall viewing experience
    Depth is enhanced: On this front we definitely have to give curved 4K TVs their due. The depth created by the curve and particularly in larger 65 inch+ models with additional picture quality technologies like OLED can indeed create something closer than normal to a 3D viewing experience. Some brands like Samsung, which makes most of the market’s curved 4K TVs, even add depth enhancement technology to augment this 3D effect further by playing with contrast levels across the screen.
    Wider field of view: As we’d already mentioned, yes, the field of manufacturing view is wider. The extra dimension is very slight but it is indeed there.
    Superior contrast: Since most of the best 4K UHD TVs like LG’s OLED models and the top shelf Samsung SUHD TVs come with curvature, the correlation is that curved TVs come with excellent contrast, but this isn’t because of the curve, it’s because of the other technologies most curved models also have in them.
    They simply look manufacturing cool: This is the point in favor of curved TVs which we definitely won’t argue against. They may have their flaws and be obtrusive if hung from a wall (for those which can be mounted up at all) but these TVs undoubtedly do look cool. They’re striking, they’re elegant and they’re sleek as hell.

    The thing is, while the curve prevents flat LCD’s usual reduction in contrast and colour performance with off-axis viewing, inevitably the curved shape can negatively affect your image’s manufacturing geometry when viewing from down the TV’s side.

    Surprisingly this problem doesn’t really become uncomfortable to watch until you get manufacturing to around 35 degrees either side of directly opposite the screen (an angle Samsung itself agrees with us on). manufacturing But as soon as you get beyond 35 degrees images quickly start to become almost unwatchable thanks to the way the side of the picture nearest your seating position starts to look foreshortened versus the opposite side.

    Your brain tries to compensate for the distorted geometry it’s witnessing too, which means off-axis viewing can be fatiguing.

    Curved TV Pros

    1. You feel more immersed in what you’re watching

    When you look at the real world you don’t perceive it as just a flat ‘screen’. The rounded nature of your eyeballs gives you peripheral vision too, so that you’re aware of the world extending manufacturing around you to your sides. By curving the edges of their pictures toward you, curved TVs try to replicate this sense of a world to the side of as well as in front of you, making you feel more immersed in what you’re watching.

    2. You feel like you’re experiencing a wider field of view

    By curving the edges of their pictures gently forward, curved TVs appear to fill more of your field of view than flat ones – so long as you’re sat in roughly the right position, at any rate.

    3. You see more sharpness at the edges of the image

    Because curved screens track the natural shape of your eyes better than flat ones, their images look slightly sharper at their edges. It’s this phenomenon that leads to many commercial cinemas using curved screens, since the bigger the screen the more likely your eyes are to perceive a reduction in clarity at the edges if that screen is flat. With this in mind, though, I’d say this sharpness point only applies to very large TVs of 70 inches and more.

    Now, while curve doesn’t measurably create greater immersion as we’ve seen above, it can ruin viewing angles in certain ways. Unlike a curved commercial theater screen, in which the entire audience easily fits inside the ideal viewing angles of the screen’s gigantic curve, the normal household 4K TV with curvature in the 55 to 70 inch range effectively reduces the ideal viewing area in front of it to just 35 degrees manufacturing off from center to either side.

    In other words, the actual ideal viewing space and angles of a curved TV can be smaller than what they would be for a flat TV! Anybody who isn’t lucky enough to be sitting within less than 35 degrees to either side of the front of the screen will actually end up being stuck with observing slight foreshortening of the on-screen image. This can be downright annoying and cause eye strain as the brain tries to compensate for the distortion.

    It Looks manufacturing More Like 3D and You Don't Have to Wear the Glasses Argument
    Not quite. Yes, if you are sitting in the center sweet spot of a large screen curved TV (especially if it is one of those 21x9 aspect ratio 4K Ultra HD sets), your peripheral vision gets a more natural workout, adding a manufacturing more "panoramic" realism and depth that you would not get on a flat screen TV (especially a 16x9 screen) . However, you are not having a true 3D experience.

    If you weren’t watching Samsung’s TV event and LG press conference you might have missed it. The curved TV, once considered the whizzbang tech that would save televisions, is manufacturing dead. Not quite in the ground, but no longer the darling of its makers. The curved TV is being quietly shuffled away from the limelight to make way for newer, and better, fads in televisions.

    Last night Samsung showed off its newest flagship television. The Q9 is gorgeous, compact for its size, and traffics all its inputs on a single cord about the width of fishing line. It is also painfully flat. The display does not curve in the slightest. This is very different from years past, where Samsung’s high end curved TVs were the star of Samsung’s show.

    Flagship televisions tend to possess all the features that are most forward looking for a company. They’re intended to be incredible future-proof sets worth their $5000+ price tags. Televisions that will still wow your guests years after newer and better technology has come along.

    Samsung reps told Gizmodo that the company still “believes” in curved TVs, and there’s a variant available in the more affordable Q7 and Q8 models. But the exclusion of a curved manufacturing version in the flagship Q9 is a big deal.

    If the 3D content is produced well, viewing through active shutter or passive polarized glasses is still the best way to view 3D in terms of perceived depth. Even though 3D TVs manufacturing were discontinued in 2017, the 3D viewing experience is still available on many video projectors.

    Other Problems with Curved Screen TV That They Won't Tell You
    Ambient Light Reflections: One big issue with regards to Curved Screen TVs is ambient light reflection. If viewing a curved TV in a room that has windows, lamps, or reflected light off walls, the thing that is noticeable is how that light is reflected off the screen. Because of the curved screen, reflected light and objects appear shape distorted, which manufacturing can be very distracting. Also, depending on the outer screen coating, you can see these reflections when the TV is off.
    This is not only annoying for consumers (with some getting a case of buyer's remorse) but think of home theater installers and interior decorators getting headaches trying to design and place lighting and objects in the room without causing TV screen reflection problems.

    Off-Axis Viewing: Here is another critical problem with curved TVs. Not only is your horizontal viewing angle important, but also the vertical. If you are sitting too low or too high in relation to the center of the screen, you may notice that the image bows somewhat. Of course, all flat LED/LCD TVs have both horizontal and vertical off-axis viewing issues to some extent, but with a curved screen configuration, these effects are exaggerated on both LED/LCD and OLED sets.

    To simplify your process of selecting a curved or flat 4K TV as much as possible, we’re going to use this section to give you an overall bullet-point breakdown of pros and cons, so you can manufacturing quickly weigh in favor of one or the other display design:

    PROs

    At very wide angles, like 45 degrees, you can see a bit of added dimension on the right side of a curved screen. It looks a bit stretched, which makes it easier to see whatever objects happen to be there. The left side, on the other hand, appears a bit compressed. That said, this is well past the angle at which picture quality has begun to degrade. If you’re watching from this wide of an angle, your viewing experience is already subpar.

    Winner: Curved. While flat and curved TVs react differently to the angle they're viewed at, there is no clear advantage to either format. Both curved and flat TVs see their picture quality deteriorate when viewed from an angle. The only real manufacturing difference between the two is if they are viewed from very close, where the sides of the flat TV will darken compared to the center.

    Size and immersiveness

    The Case For The Defence
    The first key point is that curved TVs make much more sense at really big screen sizes than they do on screens of 50 inches or less. In fact, I’d say the negatives of curving a screen manufacturing I’ll get into later tend to overwhelm the positives unless you’re talking about a TV at least 55 inches across, with the full range of positives only kicking in at 65 inches or bigger.

    The positives I’m talking about kick off with a slightly enhanced sense of immersion in what you’re watching. This happens because with large screens - or if you’re sitting close to your TV - the curved extremities of the image bend around into your peripheral vision in a way you don’t experience with even the most enormous flat TVs.

    This peripheral vision effect additionally means that large curved TVs can feel like they’re filling fractionally more of your field of view than a flat TV of the same size.

    Also interesting is the way you feel an enhanced sense of depth with curved screens - something that’s especially effective with large-scale view shots and on 4K TVs, where the extra resolution is manufacturing able to resolve detailing further into the distance.

    It’s this enhanced depth that leads some people to say that watching 4K on a curved TV creates an almost 3D effect.

    Your Eye Is Curved, So Why Not Your TV?
    On really big TVs - think 78 inches or more - using a curved screen can also potentially make the edges of the picture look slightly sharper than they would on a similarly colossal flat TV. This is because the curvature of the screen replicates the natural curvature of your eyes, so that the focal distance between your eye and all parts of the screen remains consistent. As well as yielding marginal focus benefits at the edge of very large screens, this mimicking of your eyes’ shape also makes long-term viewing feel marginally less fatiguing.

    The More Immersive Viewing Experience Argument
    So, one of the advantages of curved screen TVs touted by manufacturers is that these sets provide a more immersive viewing environment, sort of like bringing an "IMAX-like" viewing experience to the living room.

    On the other hand, the bigger the curved 4K UHD TV, the larger its ideal viewing area and in this category, the size of larger 4K TVs does matter, with a 70 inch 4K UHD TV being the minimum you’d need to avoid the potential manufacturing eye strain caused by watching the TV even just a little bit from off-center. Again though, even a 70 to 85 inch TV with curvature won’t create anything remotely resembling the immersiveness that some claim for these televisions.

    We should note that at slight off-center viewing angles, curved 4K TVs can indeed create a slightly better dimensionality effect in the picture they’re displaying but this is offset by the problems we have described above. Furthermore, the one type of curved 4K TV in which curve least affects off-angle viewing would be LG’s OLED models. In these TVs, off-angle viewing doesn’t lead to the sort of color washout and contrast reduction found in LCD TVs. This is thanks to the nature of their OLED display technology and it might be why curvature on OLED 4K TVs tends to look somewhat nicer than it does on LCD TVs. However even in these models, the curve doesn’t add any real benefit, and it’s the OLED display which creates the real added value in their display.

    Distortion and Reflection

    Reflection in either a curved or flat screen TV will be much more of an effect created by the level of gloss in the screen instead of its curvature. Glossier screens will normally reflect quite a bit in brightly lit spaces while more matte TV manufacturing screens wont. Furthermore, 4K TVs with particularly good brightness, contrast and color manufacturing vibrancy won’t be affected by reflection as much as models in which these display technologies are duller, regardless of whether they’re flat or curved. A very good example of this is the picture quality on the flat screened but absolutely superb Sony X940C and X930C 4K TVs. That said, for whatever reflection there is in a curved TV, it will be more stretched out than it would be in a flat screen TV due to distortion from the curve. In other words, it will take up more of the display space and block out slightly more of your view.

    The best solutions for reflection in either flat or curved TVs lies in positioning them as ideally as possible so there aren’t any bright sources of light opposite the screen and to generally try watching your TV under darker lighting conditions if possible, whether the model in question is curved or not.

    As for distortions other than those produced manufacturing with light reflection, there are viewers who report a sort of “bow-tie” effect when watching certain types of content on a curved screen. In other words, the top vertical bar of something like letterboxed content can look like it’s stretching upwards along the edges of the TV, though this effect depends largely on viewing angle. Viewing a curved 4K UHD TV from dead ahead normally doesn’t produce any notable distortion.

    Pros and Cons

    However, one factor working against this argument is that curved screen viewing is most effective when only one or two persons are viewing TV (especially if you are talking about TVs manufacturing in 55 and 65-inch screen sizes). For those that have families or friends that join in on TV viewing, the side-to-side viewing requirements mean that those side viewers will not see the entire edge-to-edge picture displayed on the screen, due to the curved edges.

    The "IMAX" immersion effect really only works well for an audience in a large projection screen home or cinema environment where a screen may be installed that goes from floor to ceiling and wall-to-wall. In this setup the entire audience manufacturing sits within the curve - so if you want this same experience at home, you need to fork out the bucks for a genuine "Imax" Home Theater System - and I mean, really big bucks!

    If you watch curved TVs from an angle, meanwhile, you will see that they don’t lose contrast and colour richness anywhere near as much as flat LCD TVs do. (For more on viewing angles manufacturing see our article on the differences between LCD and plasma TVs.)

    Finally in the curved screen plus column some manufacturers (well, Samsung, anyway!) argue that pictures on curved TVs appear to have more contrast because of the way the curve focuses light - like a satellite dish - more directly towards the viewer. I can’t say I’ve personally felt the impact of this supposed benefit, however.

    Although the technology and manufacturing processes behind them are impressive, curved TVs negate this progress almost entirely, and cause them to take up more space than they need to.

    As well as taking up more space, they negatively intensify reflections off the screen, and their viewing angles tend to be worse than conventional flat sets.

    And for what? A more immersive viewing experience for those who are willing to sit uncomfortably close to their large televisions.

    But it turns out I might be in the minority with my dislike for curved sets. According manufacturing to Samsung demand for curved sets has increased by over 20% year on year, although this doesn’t explain why competing manufacturers would all kill off the form-factor.

    I tend to see curved TVs as a mid-point in our journey towards truly flexible displays that we’ll one day be able to roll up and store when not in use. Research and development money needs to be spent to get there, and curved TVs make sense as a means of recouping some of that cost before the technology fully matures.

    Regardless, if you’re someone that’s after a curved TV then it looks like Samsung is going to be your only option for the foreseeable future, and thankfully the manufacturer isn’t skimping on its support.
