The battery power continues to work during a power outage if they have been replaced regularly. Battery powered alarms can be installed easily and all models include a test button, power indicator light, battery locking, and low battery warning indicator.

    Some smoke alarms do more than detect fire. Many include carbon monoxide detection too-giving you double protection in one device. Multifunctional alarms can be battery-operated, hardwired, or smart, so prices vary.

    Smart
    Smart smoke detectors are cutting-edge in fire safety. They communicate through apps and deliver alerts if an alarm sounds. Smart alarms can talk to each other too, so you’ll know exactly where the fire is coming from if an alarm is triggered. The only downside is that smart devices are more expensive, but you get a lot of safety for your buck.

    Adding smarts to smoke detection can feel like walking a treacherous path. Old-fashioned smoke detectors have served as a fine warning system for a long time. Yes, between false alarms and low-battery chirping, they can be annoying, but for a service so essential, some annoyance is an easy trade-off. So tinkering with the established formula can feel like an unnecessarily risky move. And caution is needed, as we've seen plenty of unreliable smart home devices.

    Yet, smart home smoke detection can add to your safety and peace of mind by sending you a remote notification when something goes wrong -- facilitating a faster call to emergency services when you're away from home.

    Wholesale replacement is the most expensive and comprehensive solution. Expect to pay $100 or more for each detector you want to swap, but you'll usually get conveniences like being able to silence false alarms from an app and push notification when the batteries are low so you don't have to deal with chirping. The Nest Protect, First Alert and Roost models we tested also include carbon monoxide detection.

    2) Listeners: Plug one of these into your wall and it'll listen for the specific frequency of detectors' alarms and send you an alert when it hears something. If you have a small home, you probably won't actually save much money with a listening device. Both US-only, the Leeo Smart Alert costs $50 and Kidde RemoteLync Monitor costs $100 -- as much as the Nest Protect.

    There are two main types of smoke detector sensors. Photoelectric detectors use beams of light or low-powered lasers. In the event of a fire that generates sufficient smoke, these light beams would be blocked, triggering an alarm. Photoelectric detectors tend to be larger and aren't very sensitive.

    Almost 90 percent of all homes are outfitted with an ionization-type smoke detector. Ionization detectors respond best to fast-moving, flaming fires and are cheaper than photoelectric units. But photoelectric detectors respond faster to slow, smoldering fires. Since you never know what type of fire you’ll encounter, all fire experts now recommend installing both sensing technologies on each level in your home and in all sleeping areas.

    Photoelectric alarms are the best type for homes, as shown by CHOICE tests and as recommended by most fire authorities. Photoelectric smoke alarms are usually much faster at detecting smoke from smouldering synthetic material than ionisation alarms. In a typical house fire, burning material smoulders and smokes for a long time (possibly a few hours) before flaring into flames. It's crucial to detect the fire early in the smouldering phase so you can deal with the fire or escape the house; the longer the fire goes on, the more smoke can fill the home and become an inhalation and visibility risk.

    Studies have shown that photoelectric alarms typically respond to smoky fires within about three to five minutes. Ionisation alarms can take much longer – up to 20 minutes or more – by which time escape can be much more difficult.

    CHOICE tests have shown that some ionisation alarms can respond quickly to smouldering fires, including smouldering synthetic material such as polyurethane foam, though generally photoelectric alarms outperform them in this situation. Our tests show that ionisation alarms are also usually very quick to detect flaming fires, but a common scenario for this type of fire in the home is a cooking fire when you are likely to be nearby and see the fire yourself anyway. However, because of the the way they work, ionisation alarms tend to be more prone to nuisance alarms caused by cooking fumes or burnt toast. So while ionisation alarms can give a useful additional level of fire protection, they should not be the only type you have in your home.

    Photoelectric smoke alarms see smoke and will alert you early, so you can escape.

    Interconnected alarms will alert you no matter where you are, or where the fire starts.

    Additionally, alarms should also be hard-wired to the 240v power supply or powered by a non-removable 10 year battery.

    As Queensland residents become more familiar with the smoke alarm legislation and its 10-year timeline for implementation, they should continue to maintain their current smoke alarms and practice their fire escape plans.

    Installed by an electrician (or those with a good working knowledge of electricity), these units are much more dependable over the long haul due to their direct-wired power source. But they should have an independent battery backup so that they continue to operate during a blackout or an electrical fire that temporarily interrupts power.

    Some newer models have a hush-button feature that silences a nuisance false alarm and desensitizes the unit for a few minutes until the air clears, when it resets itself. Other high-end models have safety lights that come on when the alarm is activated.

    All smoke detectors and alarms have a test button that, when pushed, causes the alarm to sound. Also, most detectors have either a blinking or a solid light that glows to let you know that the alarm is getting power.

    Once a month, get up on a chair or use a broom handle for extra reach and push the test button. If you don’t hear anything, then your battery is dead. If after changing the battery, the smoke detector is still not working, immediately replace it with a new one.

    While battery-operated units have a built-in device that chirps when batteries get low, signaling the need for replacement, common wisdom dictates not waiting until that point. Batteries should be replaced twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall.

    Dual sensor alarms (which contain both ionisation and photoelectric sensors) are also worth considering, provided they aren't installed in a location (such as near a kitchen) where the ionisation sensor could be prone to nuisance alarms from cooking.

    No smoke alarm can actually tell the difference between nuisance smoke and a real fire; the challenge is to get the sensitivity just right.

    Dual sensor (ionization and photoelectric) detectors cost about $50 each and work great for basement and main floor hallway applications or where you don’t want to mount multiple detectors on your walls or ceilings. However, for bedrooms and hallways outside bedrooms, many experts recommend installing two multifeatured detectors: a photoelectric detector with battery backup and an escape light and a second unit with an ionization and carbon monoxide (CO) sensor. That setup provides both types of fire detection, along with battery backup, CO protection and a light to help guide you through darkness and smoke.

    Ionization detectors, on the other hand, are what exist in over 90% of homes today. Instead of light beams, they use an ionization chamber and a source of ionizing radiation to detect smoke. Compared to photoelectric detectors, ionization detectors are much more sensitive, smaller, and cheaper. As a result, they're also much more common in homes.

    The principle of ionization type smoke detectors is as shown above. Alpha radiation from the Americium-241 foil increases the ability of air to conduct electricity and thus ionizes the air through Chamber A and B allowing an electrical current flow. In normal operation or when the electrical current flow in Chamber A and B is constant, the electrical potential of S Point is kept balanced. When some particles enter Chambers, alpha radiation is partly absorbed by the smoke particles and consequently the electrical current flow in the Chambers drops , the electrical potential of Point S is unbalanced. This is detected by the detector's electronic circuitry to activate an alarm horn or buzzer.

    The Roost seems like a less permanent solution than the other two categories, but most smoke detectors are only rated to last for 10 years. You'll have to put a Roost into every smoke detector for complete coverage, so it's not as efficient at comprehensive smarts as a listener, but it's a more cost-effective route than wholesale replacement and neutralizes more inconveniences than listeners.

    Inside a typical ionization detector, you'll find a tiny amount (about 1/5000th of a gram) of americium-241, a radioactive element that's a good source of alpha particles. These particles ionize the air inside the ionization chamber, creating a weak electrical current between the two plates inside the ionization chamber. Smoke — even a tiny amount — will disrupt this weak electrical current, causing the ionization detector to sound its alarm.

    Speaking personally, I would prioritize these sorts of complex features on devices that I use regularly rather than rarely. After the novelty of the new Protects wore off, I stopped checking the Nest app completely—and probably won't check it again until it generates an alert. In fact, there's a good chance I will literally never need to check in on my Protects until their batteries run down (unless I suddenly become a much poorer cook or my four-year-old lights our home on fire).

    With devices that trip rarely, the fundamental need is for absolute reliability. In my previous home, for instance, we had a battery-powered backup sump pump in addition to the main one. This proved crucial during several periods of flooding, but even such a simple device routinely failed due to issues with its lead-acid battery (which needs more maintenance than you'd suspect to hold a charge for years) and associated electronics. If I was gone and the main power went out, would the backup system actually work in any given instance? I was never sure.

    Installing and maintaining smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) detectors can save your life. Luckily, they're inexpensive and easy to install.

    Basic smoke detectors start at $15, with carbon monoxide alarms costing $35 and up. Newer models offer more features. For example, smart smoke detectors communicate between devices and provide integrated, whole-house protection. Whether the detectors are hardwired or wirelessly connected, with such a system when one detects smoke or carbon monoxide, all of them will sound.

    I have similar questions about a device as complex as the Protect, which needs to run for many years without (hopefully) doing anything. But when it does go off, it's crucial for everything to function. (Fortunately, the Protect tries to check all its internal systems once a day, though this didn't help with the failed unit.)

    One way to increase the fire protection of your home is to get interconnected smoke alarms, so that when one goes off, they all do. Keenan referred to this as “the biggest feature which makes a smoke alarm effective.” The main advantage is that such an arrangement allows for “early notification of all residents within the dwelling, no matter where the problem originates.”

    Current building code requires interconnected, hardwired smoke alarms with a battery backup in all new construction. Retrofitting this kind of wiring into a house is expensive, so now some new battery-powered smoke alarms can use a basic wireless technology to link the units. Overall, our research convinced us that recommending interconnected models should be a main focus of this guide.

    Working smoke alarms are essential in any home, but you should treat them as just one piece of a comprehensive fire-safety plan. Your plan should include other safety items such as fire extinguishers and escape ladders, but most important, you should base it on an awareness of what to do in case of a fire. This wireless-connection setup is internal to the alarms and does not require a phone app. You can also designate each unit by location, so if an alarm is tripped, all of them indicate which room the hazard is originating from. The First Alert SA511CN2-3ST is the only model that combines all of those features in one bundle—and at a price that’s just slightly above average for the category, it looks to be a good value. Also, because it has a voice alert rather than a beep or a tone, our interviewed experts told us that it’s more apt to wake a sleeping child.

    3) Smart batteries: As of right now, you only have one option in this category, the Roost Smart Battery, but it's a compelling idea nonetheless. The Roost costs $35 or £40 (about AU$50), looks and acts like a 9V, connects to your Wi-Fi network and sits in your smoke detector like any other battery. Except unlike a normal battery, you'll get a push notification when the smoke detector sounds and an alert when the five-year battery starts running low (you can replace the battery part for $15). If your smoke detector only uses battery power, you can even silence your alarm with the Roost, but you lose that function with hardwired alarms that use a battery backup.

    When your Vivint smoke detector battery gets low, you will be alerted on your panel first. The smoke detector itself will not chirp until it gets to critical battery level. If it gets to that point, you will hear a chirp from the smoke detector every 48 seconds until the battery is changed. Our smoke detectors take either three AAA batteries or one CR123A battery. If your sensor’s batteries are low, complete the following steps to replace them. You can open up your smoke detector to see the type of batteries it takes.

    Hush Button: To silence a nuisance smoke detector, pressing a hush button is more convenient than disabling the unit, and it avoids the possibility of forgetting to turn it back on. All the smoke detectors we tested had this feature. Some carbon monoxide and combination CO/smoke detectors can work with a remote control to silence a nuisance alarm.

    The Protect addresses this problem in a novel way. It's based on standard photoelectric tech that sees smoke by shining beams through a "smoke chamber" and detecting how much light gets scattered by airborne particles within. Traditional photoelectric detectors use infrared light with a wavelength above 700nm—and so does the Protect. This works well for detecting large smoke particles of 250nm, but burning items like pine wood or newspaper produce smaller particles of only 50nm.

    So the Protect adds an additional blue LED, which shines light at around 400nm. As a Nest whitepaper puts it, "When smoke particles are very small, shorter wavelengths of light, like blue, scatter light many times more efficiently than longer wavelengths like infrared."

    My old smoke alarms were independent units, each perched blissfully on its ceiling spot, unaware of its location in the house or other alarms in the area. In our three-level home, this posed a problem; would a nighttime smoke alarm emanating from the basement actually be heard by deep-sleeping children in their closed-door bedrooms on the second floor?     Considering that both sensor styles have their benefits, you might conclude that your best bet is a dual-technology alarm, which has both ionization and photoelectric sensors in a single unit. But there’s a good reason not to rely entirely on dual-sensor smoke alarms. Ionization sensors are prone to nuisance alarms, mostly from cooking and shower steam, and people often disable them over that kind of annoyance. So while Joseph Keenan, assistant fire marshal in Burlington, Vermont, recommends that both types of alarm should be present in a home, in our interview he made sure to specify that they should be installed as “separate devices … not as dual-sensor devices.”3 He explained further: “If nuisance alarms occur with the ionization sensor, residents will take down the device and be left without detection.” Splitting the two types of sensors allows you to place each one in an ideal location.

    It’s important to check your smoke alarms on a regular basis. Training coordinator and fire safety educator Tom Kiurski recommends doing so monthly and says to “change the battery as suggested by the manufacturer.” According to the NFPA, “Manufacturers’ instructions are specific to the batteries (brand and model) that must be used. The smoke alarm may not work properly if a different kind of battery is used.” Our picks all take AA batteries, but the instructions for the Kidde model we recommend are quite specific, saying you should use only Energizer E91, Duracell MN1500, or Duracell MX1500 batteries.

    While this might sound like a marketing scare tactic designed to direct people to higher-priced, dual-sensor alarms, rigorous recent testing at Consumer Reports proved its truth. The consumer group gave its lowest possible marks to ionization-based alarms trying to detect smoldering fires (and, vice versa, to photoelectric alarms trying to detect flaming fires).

    Sometimes this kind of smoke/detector mismatch results only in a detection delay; the alarm will sound… eventually. But not always. When Nest separately commissioned testing from an independent lab, two of three competing ionization detectors didn't ever sound in the presence of smoldering fire tests. Ionization detectors also have a reputation for false alarms, which are the "leading reason for disconnected smoke alarms," according to the National Fire Protection Association.

    A long-life battery is included in the Smoke Detector Air package. The battery status is sent to the Miniserver every day and can be checked in the visual interface at any time. If the battery life is coming to an end, you can be reliably notified via the Miniserver, either by a phone call from our Cloud Caller, by e-mail from our Cloud Mailer or with a flashing light – it’s up to you.

    Power Source: Hard-wired smoke and carbon monoxide detectors tie into your home's wiring and require professional installation. Battery-only detectors are simple to install, and they work during a power failure, but most batteries require annual replacement. (Lithium batteries may last the life of the detector.) Plug-in detectors are available, but electric outlets are typically located low on the wall, while the optimal placement for the detector is on or near the ceiling.

    Early warning is the key to escaping a house fire. Interconnected smoke detectors increase the likelihood that all occupants in a home will hear an alarm regardless of where the fire originates. Adding a wireless connection to smoke detectors enables additional features that increase safety and convenience. Examples include: automatic notification sent to fire department, easily retrofit existing installations, remote notifications of alarm event, and low battery notifications.

    Smart Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors: You can link some smoke and carbon monoxide detectors so that all units in the house sound an alarm when any single one is triggered. Some newer homes have wiring already in place to link the detectors. In a home without such wiring, you can buy detectors that interconnect wirelessly. These smart smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are an important safety feature in a home with multiple levels. A standalone detector may be adequate for a small, single-level home.

    Digital Carbon Monoxide Display: This feature displays carbon monoxide concentrations in parts per million, even when the concentrations are below the level that triggers the detector. Carbon monoxide detectors certified by UL must go off at no less than 70 ppm, but as little as 30 ppm can harm heart patients, pregnant women, and children. The display can alert you if the carbon monoxide level is inching up or is higher than usual. Some also show the peak level since they were reset, warning you of any spikes that occurred while you were away. Expect to pay a little extra for this feature: $5 or $10 for standalone detectors, slightly more for smart detectors.

    My other question about complexity concerns security. The Protect includes Wi-Fi connections, it communicates with remote servers, and it contains hardware, including—somewhat surprisingly—a microphone. (This is apparently used in self-testing to make sure the Protect alarm actually functions.)

    I preferred an alarm system that could provide remote notifications, pushing out warnings even when I'm on vacation. Showing more data, such as the parts-per-million level of carbon monoxide warnings, was even better.
    The alarm must work even when high-tech gewgaws like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and cloud connections aren't functioning. The Protect units continue to function locally even if your router is the object that starts the fire.
    The Protect app supports both iOS and Android devices; our house has both.
    I still wanted battery-operated units, as I wasn't excited about adding significantly to the expense by roping an electrician into the project.

    Nest calls this system a "Split Spectrum Sensor" and says that the algorithm used to tune it was built from "several hundred data sets, covering a wide range of fire types, including smoldering fires, flaming fires, and nuisance situations."

    Does it work? According to outside lab testing paid for by Nest, the Protect is as fast or slightly faster at sensing smoldering fires than other photoelectric, ionization, and combo smoke detectors. When it comes to flaming fires, though, Nest only performed as well as typical photoelectric detectors—and worse than ionization and combo units. (The Protect's "heads up" feature, which triggers a warning before a true emergency situation develops, does mitigate this somewhat.)

    The Protect did better, though, when it came to nuisance alarms, those false positives often triggered by shower steam or cooking food. An outside test lab built two rooms, one with a shower and one with a stove and then put a wide variety of competing smoke detectors in randomized nearby locations. A tech was paid to broil frozen hamburgers in the oven, fry frozen hamburgers on the stove, and toast bread for long periods of time. In the shower room, water was left running until steam poured out the door and over the lineup of smoke detectors outside.

    Thanks to its built-in humidity sensor, the Protect had an easy time with the steam; it didn't trigger once. (Other photoelectric combos triggered between 30 and 80 percent of the time.) Likewise, the burnt toast tripped ionization-based detectors 80 percent of the time; the Protect didn't alarm once. (The boiling and frying hamburger tests tripped all detectors a significant percentage of the time, including the Protect.)

    Don’t use rechargeable batteries: The manual for the First Alert SA511CN2-3ST (PDF) says to “[n]ever use rechargeable batteries,” and none of the batteries that Kidde recommends are rechargeable.

    As for how often you should replace the batteries, the information we found errs on the side of caution. First Alert recommends putting new batteries in twice each year, specifically “when you change your clocks for daylight saving time.” That might sound excessive, but as Consumer Reports explains, “You have installed those smoke alarms in order to stay safe, and the battery-change schedule is conservative because of an abundance of caution.” The CR article adds, “If you think that your alarm’s old battery has some ‘life’ left, use it in a product that doesn’t have to do with safety.” Most alarms start to chirp when the batteries are low—make sure not to treat such sounds as nuisance alarms and ignore them.

    Research backs Keenan up on the problem of disabled alarms. A study of smoke alarms in rural Alaskan homes found an “8-fold higher incidence of nuisance alarms in homes with ionization alarms.” In addition, the same study found that, due to nuisance alarms, “ionization smoke alarms were almost 5 times more likely to be disconnected 6 months after installation compared with photoelectric alarms.” A Texas A&M study that took into account disabled alarms concluded that “the probability of a fatality was 19.8% with ionization alarms [exclusively] but only 3.99% with photoelectric alarms.” Given those stats, it’s easy to see why Keenan told us that “resident behavior is the biggest challenge we face with smoke alarms.” This is also the reason the International Association of Fire Fighters, the largest firefighter union in the world, supports legislation (PDF) making photoelectric alarms a mandatory requirement for fire and building codes.
