    Recent advances in wearable computing ask for bendable and conformable electronic circuits and sensors, allowing an easy integration into everyday life objects. Here, we present a novel flexible tilt sensor on plastic using several conductive microspheres as gravity sensitive pendulum. The sensor provides a digital output of the measurement signal without the need for any additional electronics (e.g. amplifiers) close to the sensor. The sensor is fabricated on a free-standing polyimide foil with SU-8 photoresist defining the cavity for the pendulum. The pendulum consists of freely movable conductive microspheres which, depending on the sense of gravity, connect different electric contacts patterned on the polyimide foil. The shown tilt sensors with 4 and 8 contacts each achieve an angular resolution of 45° and 22.5°, respectively. The sensors exhibit a linear behaviour with a hysteresis of 10° max.

    Description: This AT407 basic tilt switch can easily be used to detect orientation. Inside the can is a ball that make contact with the pins when the case is upright. Tilt the case over and the balls don’t touch, thus not making a connection.

    Tilt sensors are devices that produce an electrical output that varies with angular movement. They are sometimes referred to as inclinometers, but inclinometers produce both a signal and readout; tilt sensors just produce a signal. As their name suggests, tilt sensors are used to measure tilt or slope within a limited range of motion. They generally function within one to two axis of a place, whereas full motion would use three or more axis and additional sensors.

    Tilt Sensors Construction
    The way a tilt sensor works depends upon its type. They are generally force balance sensors, solid-state MEMS device, or fluid-filled sensor. Each type is described below.

    Selection Criteria

    Types of Tilt Sensors
    There are five tilt sensor types. This product classification includes many technologies and device types to measure slope, tilt, inclination, elevation and slope.
    Force balance sensors are gravity-referenced sensors that are often used in tiltmeters and inclinometers. The sensor consists of a flexure-supported torque balance system in which a pendulous mass is suspended between two position detectors. When the mass tries to move in the direction of tilt (due to the force of gravity), the position of the mass is detected by the position sensors and induces a current change.

    There are numerous uses for these basic sensors, but keep in mind you might need to use some debouncing code, as the sensor isn’t immune to small vibrations and such.

    A tilt sensor is an instrument that is used for measuring the tilt in multiple axes of a reference plane. Tilt sensors measure the tilting position with reference to gravity, and are used innumerous applications. They enable the easy detection of orientation or inclination. Similar to mercury switches, they may also be known as tilt switches or rolling ball sensors.

    These instruments have become more popular over the years, and are being adapted for increasing numbers of high end applications. For example, the sensor provides valuable information about both the vertical and horizontal inclination of an airplane, which helps the pilot to understand how to tackle obstacles during the flight. By knowing the current orientation of the plane, and the angle at which the plane is inclined to the earth's surface, stunt pilots, i.e. the Red Arrows, can put on a fascinating air show. Tilt sensors are an essential decision making tool for the pilots.

    Specifications of Tilt Sensors
    The functionality of tilt sensors is influenced by factors such as gravity, vibration, temperature, zero offset, linearity, cross-axis sensitivity, acceleration/deceleration, shock, clear line of sight between the user and the measured point, and calibration of tilt sensors.

    The tilt sensor is a component that can detect the tilting of an object. However it is only the equivalent to a pushbutton activated through a different physical mechanism. This type of sensor is the environmental-friendly version of a mercury-switch. It contains a metallic ball inside that will commute the two pins of the device from on to off and viceversa if the sensor reaches a certain angle.

    The code example is exactly as the one we would use for a pushbutton but substituting this one with the tilt sensor. We use a pull-up resistor (thus use active-low to activate the pins) and connect the sensor to a digital input pin that we will read when needed.

    The prototyping board has been populated with a 1K resitor to make the pull-up and the sensor itself. We have chosen the tilt sensor from Assemtech, which datasheet can be found here. The hardware was mounted and photographed by Anders Gran, the software comes from the basic Arduino examples.

    The key specifications of tilt sensors include:

    Number of axes: The number of axes is an important factor as it varies from application to application. In robotics, a dual axes tilt sensor is used, in video game controllers and joysticks, a 3 axes tilt sensor is required, and in some smartphones, 4 axes sensors are used
    Resolution: The minimum inclination detected by the sensor is called its resolution
    Sensitivity: The sensor's ability to react to small changes is called its sensitivity
    Measuring range: The range of inclination that can be handled by the sensor is important. Some sensors are capable of measurements up to 10° while others can cover a range of up to 60°
    Noise tolerance: Noise tends to cause harmonic distortions in the function of the sensor, resulting in output variation and reduction of system efficiency.

    Tilt sensors can also be found in game controllers such as the Microsoft Sidewinder Freestyle Pro and Sony's PlayStation 3 controller.

    However, unlike these other controllers in which the tilt sensor serves as a supplement to normal control methods, it serves as one of the central features of Nintendo's Wii Remote and the Nunchuk attachment. Along with accelerometers, the tilt sensors are a primary method of control in most Wii games.

    It is now being used in many different aspects, instead of just games like motocrossing and flight simulators. It can be used for sport gaming, first-person shooter, and other odd uses such as in WarioWare: Smooth Moves

    Another example is a virtual version of a wooden maze with obstacles in which you have to maneuver a ball by tilting the maze. A homebrew tilt sensor interface was made for the Palm (PDA).

    These sensors consist of a rolling ball with a conductive plate beneath them. When the sensor gets power, the rolling ball falls to the bottom of the sensor to form an electrical connection. When the sensor is tilted, the rolling ball doesn’t fall to the bottom so that the current cannot flow the two end terminals of the sensor.

    When the device gets power and is in its upright position, then the rolling ball settle at the bottom of the sensor to form an electrical connection between the two end terminals of the sensor. Next the circuit becomes short circuit and the LED gets sufficient current. If the circuit gets tilted so that the rolling ball doesn’t settle at the bottom of the sensor with the electrical conduction path, then the circuit becomes open. This is about the circuit operation.

    These sensors are gravity referenced sensors and are anticipated for DC acceleration measurements like ships, vehicles, aircraft and seismic events. These sensors are frequently used in inclinometers and tilt meters. Force balance sensors are capable of measuring levels from 0.0001g to 200g, and the frequency range is from DC to 1000Hz. The advantages of these sensors include their high accuracy, a change in broad measurement, insensitivity to temperature change and their high accuracy. The disadvantage of this sensor is its high cost.

    Solid state MEMS are small sensors as they consist of movable proof mass plates that are attached to a reference frame through a mechanical suspension system. This is a technique of combining mechanical and electrical components together on a chip to generate a system of miniature dimensions. Small means that the dimensions are less than the thickness of human hair. MEMS sensors are key components in many medical, industrial, aerospace, consumer and automotive applications. These sensors are used in anything from smart phones, gaming, medical tests and satellites. Steps to fabrication of MEMS involve the basic IC fabrication method.

    Fluid filled Sensor:

    While not as precise or flexible as a full accelerometer, tilt switches can detect motion or orientation simply. Another benefit to them is that the big ones can switch power on their own. Accelerometers, on the other hand, output digital or analog voltage that must then be analyzed with extra circuitry.
    Basic Stats
    These stats are for the tilt sensor in the Adafruit shop which is very much like the 107-2006-EV . Nearly all will have slightly different sizes & specifications, although they all pretty much work the same. If there's a datasheet, you'll want to refer to it

    These Sensors can either be capacitive or electrolytic.

    The electrolytic sensor is used to measure an angle and the angle may be expressed in degrees, arc minutes, or arc seconds. Electrolytic sensors produce extremely accurate pitch measurements in many applications. These sensors easily maintain their high accuracy and small size. These sensors function by using cavity filled with fluid or a glass. The fluid performs between a common positive and negative electrode. When the electrolytic sensor is levelled, both the positive and negative electrodes get consistently submerged within the fluid and produce a balanced signal output. When the sensor is rotated, an imbalance is created between the two electrodes. So, the imbalance of any one of the electrodes is proportional to the angle of the rotation.

    Capacitive Tilt Sensors

    These types of sensors are designed to take non-contact measurements of inclination and tilt. These can operate both as switches and sensors. When the geometry of the capacitor is changed, the capacitor sensor relies on variation of capacitor. Here, the capacitive sensing is independent of the base material. These devices consist of a suspension beams, comb drive capacitors and central proof mass. When a tilt occurs, the central mass moves towards one of the combs so the capacitance increases at one side and decreases at the other side. The main advantage of the capacitive sensor is its performance ratio and cost-effectiveness, whereas a limited response is the main disadvantage of this sensor.

    Tilt sensors are used for:

    Dual Axis Tilt Sensors (Inclinometers)
    Our dual axis tilt sensors, inclinometers and clinometers use fluid filled capacitance, conductive or MEMS-technology for measuring ranges between ±2° up to ±90° inclination in both the X- and Y-axis. The sensor units are reliable, have a wide spectrum of modern technology with high accuracy and resolution.

    Indicating pitch and roll of vehicles, sail boats, and aircraft.
    Monitoring the boom angle of cranes and material handlers.
    Measuring the "look angle" of a satellite antenna towards a satellite.
    Measuring the slope angle of a tape or chain during distance measurement.
    Estimating the height of a building, tree, or other feature using a vertical angle and a distance (determined by taping or pacing).
    Measuring the angle of drilling in well-logging applications.
    Measuring the height of trees or other poles
    Measuring steepness of a ski slope.
    Product Specifications
    Buyers should consider these product specifications when selecting tilt sensors.
    Tilt angle range is the range of desired linear output measured in degrees.
    Number of axis determine direction of tilt
    Bandwidth is the frequency used to measure changes in acceleration.
    Accuracy and frequency range should be considered together, as they indicate the range of frequencies over which tilt switches and sensors meet their accuracy specifications. Accuracy is degraded at lower and lower frequencies unless the device is capable of DC response; and at higher frequencies near resonance and beyond, where its output response rolls off. Frequencies are usually the 3-dB roll off frequencies.
    Electrical Outputs
    GlobalSpec provides information about tilt sensors with different electrical outputs.
    Analog current represents tilt sensed as current (e.g. 4-20 mA).
    Digital transistor-transistor logic (TTL) uses transistors to preform both the logic gating function and the amplifying function.
    Analog frequency or pulse is a signal representing the sensed tilt.
    Analog voltage represents tilt sensed as voltage (e.g. 0-10 VDC).
    Serial interfaces transmit one bit of data at a time. Serial communication tends to be faster than parallel communication.
    Parallel interfaces transmit multiple bits of data at a time using different channels.
    Switched or alarm signals are designed to alert the user when a tilt sensor has been turned on or off indicating that the orientation of the sensor has changed.
    Display Types
    Display types influence how the user interacts with the device.
    Analog meters are basic devices with markings to determine orientation
    Digital numerical displays use LCDs to display orientation angle, voltage or current.

    Used as a warning system on the external surface of dewars (to transport cryogenic liquids) to indicate tilt being too much.
    Measuring and alignment of 2-dimensional plane tilt angles with dual-axis tilt sensors:
    2-axis tilt sensors/ inclinometers utilizing MEMS tilt sensors are capable of simultaneous 2-axis high accuracy (typically 0.001°) and wide angle measuring range (e.g., ±30.000°). The 2-axis tilt sensor technology enables simultaneous 2D (X-Y plane) tilt angles measurement which traditional single-axis tilt sensors are unable to offer. Often, precision industry applications in particular, levelling, angle measurement/ alignment and surface flatness profiling tasks essentially involve 2-dimensional planes rather than single-axis.
    Working Principle
    A tilt sensor has a metallic ball that is designed to move the two pins of the instrument from the 'on' to the 'off' position, and vice versa, if the sensor reaches a pre-determined angle. Tilt sensors are the environment-friendly version of a mercury-switch.
