The Problem: I need a small speaker in my device, but I don’t know where to start.
Speaker or Buzzer: Buzzers or piezoelectric speakers (piezos) can produce loud sounds, but with a very limited frequency range. For playing voice, music, or a variety of tones, a speaker should be selected. Note that there are other small “speaker” components used for near-ear applications (e.g., phones, headsets) which include receivers and balanced armatures. These types of components are supported by Seltech, but not being considered here.
Dimensions and Shape: The size for all three dimensions is often mobile the first determining criteria. The smallest speakers currently on the market are approximately 11x15mm and 9x16mm. It’s ideal to maximize the allotted space in your device to ensure that the best possible sound can be achieved. Based on the industrial design a round or rectangular speaker can be selected. Rectangular speakers tend to be used in designs that are limited in space, especially PCB space.
Connectivity: The main 2 connectivity options are wires soldered to the speaker or spring contacts to be pressed directly against a PCB. Care should be taken if soldering to spring contacts, since too much heat can damage the speaker. Other methods include flex PCB and pin contacts.
Sensitivity: This parameter gives an idea of how “efficient” the speaker is at transmitting sound. It is given in terms of decibels (dB) at a particular input power and distance from the speaker. (For example: 80 dB at 1W/1m) Even though many speakers have a power rating other than 1W, the sensitivity may be shown at 1W to provide a nominalized comparison with other speakers. The rule for changes in input power or distance from the speaker can be seen below:
Frequency Range: The resonance or resonant frequency (Fo) is the frequency at which a speaker naturally vibrates. This value determines the low frequency performance of a speaker. Referencing the chart below, for sounds lower than the resonance frequency, the decibels of the speaker quickly decrease. Above the resonance frequency, a speaker should ideally have a flat response for most of its performance range. Many speakers are rated up to 20kHz, but most adults cannot hear sounds above ~12kHz. mobile Although it’s difficult for small speakers to have good low frequency performance, the solutions offered by Seltech are very competitive.
Electrical: Speakers have nominal and maximum power ratings. A speaker can be driven at its nominal rating for extended periods of time, while the max rating is for short “bursts”. Speakers range in impedance up to a few hundred Ω. Some common impedance values are 4, 8, and 50Ω. The audio amplifier should match the speaker’s impedance.
Challenges: The difficulties with properly designing in a speaker are often more mechanical than electrical in nature.

Freddie got an early morning start to the line at the Apple store today and got his hands on some AirPods.
After about thirty seconds of evaluating how to set them up, hearing their audio quality, and experiencing the nice little features like auto-pausing when removing from your ear, he determined it was time to tear them down and see what they’re made of.
It looks like there are five magnets in the charging/carrying case.

Freddie started by popping off the bottom where the charge contacts are, but realized that they probably didn’t intend to assemble the Pods from the bottom

He changed strategies and cut down the visible seam on the top of the Pods, revealing a continuous folded flexible circuit board.

Part of the flexible circuit board is adhered to the back of the speaker, and the other part is nestled neatly into the main housing.

Freddie desoldered the two speaker contacts to remove the speaker. Next to the contacts is a thin flex that leads to the outer-ear proximity (IR?) sensor. That flex got severed to pull the speaker off and away from the main body.

A Flexible PCB Supplier In 2018

Recent reports from South Korea indicate that LG Innotek is gearing up for the production of flexible printed circuit boards (PCBs) for OLED (organic light emitting diode) smartphone displays. According to sources with supposed knowledge of the matter, LG Innotek will start mass-producing flexible PCBs for the mobile market next year (2018) when it will begin rivaling Samsung Electro-Mechanics on the flexible PCB market. Reportedly, the company’s main clients will be Apple Inc. as well as the conglomerate’s own smartphone branch, LG Electronics.
Samsung Electro-Mechanics is currently leading the flexible PCB segment and the company’s market presence is only expected to increase following its collaboration with Apple. Samsung is currently Apple’s main supplier for flexible PCBs required for the manufacturing of the iPhone 8, which is expected to hit the shelves later this year carrying a curved OLED display in tow. But as the need for flexible PCBs continues to increase mobile, LG Innotek is preparing to capture some of the market share and aims to be able to mass-manufacture flexible PCBs starting next year. The company will reportedly begin the construction of additional flexible PCB facilities in the second half of this year, and according to an unnamed industry representative cited by BusinessKorea, LG Innotek’s flexible PCB business will likely grow to 300 billion Korean Won (roughly $270 million) within the next few years. This expected growth is mainly attributed to LG’s collaboration with Apple as the Cupertino, California-based firm is reportedly looking for other flexible PCB suppliers aside from Samsung Electro-Mechanics in order to avoid potential supply issues and mass mobile production bottlenecks.
