A MCPCB is a Metal Core Printed Circuit Board that integrates a heat spreader in the form of a base metal material—generally an aluminum alloy—which is incorporated as part of the circuit board itself. A MCPCB can achieve a reduced thermal resistance by making use of a dielectric polymer that exhibits high thermal conductivity. As a result, a Metal Core Printed Circuit Board (MCPCB) is capable of transferring heat at a rate 8 or 9 times faster than that of a conventional FR4 material PCB.
Benefits of a MCPCB
Prevention of premature electronic component failure is one of the primary benefits of a MCPCB. The technology also helps to enhance the reliability of the system. Aluminium PCB board (also aluminum PCB, al PCB, aluminium base PCB, aluminium based PCB, metal core printed circuits… ) is a unique metal base copper clad laminate, it is with good thermal conductivity, electrical insulation and mechanical processing properties. Aluminium PCB Board printed circuits is the best performance and the cheapest cooling solutions.
The metal core of the thermal PCB can be aluminum (Aluminium PCB Board printed circuits), copper (copper clad PCB) or mixture of special alloys. Aluminium PCB Board printed circuits is the most common used among them. Aluminium PCB Board printed circuits are composed by a unique 3-layer structure includes copper (conductor layer), dielectric Layer and metal substrate. Its metal base heat dissipation plate is a low-alloyed Al-Mg-Si-based high plasticity alloy plate, which has a good thermal conductivity, electrical insulation performance and mechanical processing properties. This enable Aluminium PCB Board printed circuits outpace conventional FR-4 in the capability of loading currency with the same spec.

A simple layer single sided MCPCB consists of a metal base (usually aluminum, or copper alloy), Dielectric (non-conducting) Layer, Copper Circuit Layer, IC components and solder mask.

The prepreg dielectric provides excellent heat transfer from the foil and components to the base plate, while maintaining excellent electrical isolation. Frequently used aluminum PCB material is mainly 1000 series, 5000 series and 6000 series. The basic characteristics of these 3 series materials are as follows:
1.1000 Series: representative is AL1050, AL1060, AL1070.1000 series aluminum, also known as pure aluminum, with the largest rate aluminum in all series. The purity can reach more than 99.00%. It is also the most commonly used in products because of its simple technology, simple production process and low cost.
2. 5000 Series: representative AL5052, AL5005, AL5083, 5A05 series. 5000 series aluminum is commonly used aluminum alloy series. The main alloy element is magnesium, whose content between 3-5 %. It is also known as aluminum-magnesium alloy. The main characteristic is low density, high tensile strength, and elongation. The weight of aluminum magnesium alloy in the same area is lower than other series, so it is commonly used in aviation, such as aircraft fuel tanks, and also in conventional industrial applications.
3.6000 Series: representative AL6061 .It mainly contains magnesium and silicon ,which combine the advantage of 4000 series and 5000 series. AL6061 is a cold finished aluminum wrought products, used for the products with high requirement on corrosion resistance and oxidation resistance. It is with good use interface features, easy coating, and good process ability. Typical uses of 6061 aluminum PCB: aircraft parts, camera parts , couplers, marine accessories and hardware , electronic components and connectors and so on.
