Why on Earth would you want to buy a desktop PC or Mac in 2017? Simply put, there are computing needs that mobile devices like laptops and tablets can't fulfill as well as the stalwart desktop. Here's what to consider when deciding on your next desktop PC.

Desktop-class CPUs and graphics processors are simply more powerful than their mobile counterparts for the same money. They give you the power to finish whatever task you're working on in less time. Desktop components are less expensive in general, so instead of buying a $500 laptop with a competent Intel Core m3 processor, you can buy a $500 desktop with a powerful Intel Core i5 desktop CPU in it.

The current version of Apple's operating system is macOS Sierra. It's an excellent choice if you're already in an Apple-centric household, since it interfaces seamlessly with devices like iPads and iPhones, and with all your iTunes purchases and subscriptions. The updated version of macOS, High Sierra, will be released in the fall.

Mobile devices emphasize battery life over performance. Indeed, a significant proportion of laptops and almost all Ultrabooks today sport Intel’s energy-sipping microprocessors under the hood. That’s fine for the average office worker, but for power users with heavy multi-tasking needs or those running computationally intensive applications, nothing rivals the horsepower assembly of a desktop machine. This could come in the form of the latest workstation-class 12-core CPUs, or the use of multiple graphic cards in SLI configurations. And though they have fallen out of favor in recent years, dual CPU systems remain an option for the most exacting tasks such as CAD (computer-aided design), media editing, and encoding.

This popular all-in-one desktop PC from Dell is a perfect blend of laptop functionality and desktop productivity, making it the ideal in-home computer for most families. The 24-inch Full HD wide-viewing-angle screen is an attractive display for the Windows 10 tile app interface at 1920x1080 resolution. The computer boasts Intel Core 2.3 GHz i3, 8GB RAM and a 500GB internal hard drive, giving you enough computing power to smoothly run most applications without driving up the price tag with the most powerful hardware.

A single driver at the top fires upwards into a parabolic reflector that shoots audio out at 360 degrees. The result is powerful audio with very little need to plug in external speakers.

Do you work from home a lot and need a dependable desktop? Good news: the 23.8” display Acer Aspire AIO is probably exactly what you’re looking for. Powered by Windows 10, the Acer is priced just right, not too expensive and not budget to the point of feeling underpowered. The 6th generation 2.2GHz Intel Core i5 is paired with 8GB of RAM, a 1TB hard drive and a NVIDIA GeForce 940M graphic card with its own 2GB of dedicated video memory.

The 23.8” Full HD ( x 1080 pixels) display is beautiful, with clear and crisp colors at a 16:9 aspect ratio. The all-in-one body is just 1.4-inches slim which offers a low footprint space in the home office. Connectivity is assisted by 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 alongside four USB 3.0 ports, one USB 2.0 port and two HDMI-in ports. The included keyboard and mouse are fairly generic, so if you’re already using a pair you enjoy, we’d see no reason to unpack these out of the box.

Making movies, playing games and editing photos are a snap with the discrete NVIDIA memory card, which is an extremely nice addition for the Acer’s mid-range price tag. Acer’s built-in TrueHarmony high-performance sound won’t win any awards, but you’re not going to complain if you pop a DVD into the included drive, kick your feet up and watch a movie.

There’s always a danger of form overtaking function, but that’s not the case here. A low-power quad-core Core i5 processor is only a little slower than a full-fat desktop version. With a fast 128GB SSD and 1TB hard disk, there’s a great combination of performance and disk space. And the PC remains quiet in use.

Heavyweight tasks such as recalculating large spreadsheets also tend to require more memory. It’s usually easier to add RAM to a tower than a laptop. You can also add faster graphics cards and multiple hard drives, including Blu-ray drives for backups.

Buying direct from HP, you could get a Pavilion 550-252na tower in red, white or blue for £429. This model has a Core i5-6400 processor with 8GB of memory (2 x 4GB, sadly), a 1TB hard drive and a DVD burner, leaving one internal hard drive bay free. There is no professional service for this, but you could add three years of pickup and return service for £29.

Alternatively, you could get much the same thing with a 2TB hard drive – the Pavilion 550-254na – from John Lewis for £479.95. In this case, the price includes a two-year guarantee.

Buying direct from Dell, you could get an Inspiron 3650 with a Core i5-6400, 8GB of memory (one slot free), Nvidia GeForce 730 graphics card with 2GB of memory, 128GB SSD, 1TB hard drive, DVD writer and Windows 10 Home for £519 (Code CD65032). Sadly, you only get one year of collect and return support with no better options.

At the moment, your Excel work is probably limited by a shortage of RAM. (A PC is more likely to crash if it runs out of memory than if it runs out of processing power.) If your laptop has 4GB of memory, you should start with at least 8GB and make sure you can upgrade to 16GB or more. You can check the upgrade options in the manufacturer’s service or repair manual or, if you know the model number, Crucial’s website.

If you want a stylish PC that you connect your own peripherals and display to, there’s very little choice; it’s lucky, then, that the Pavilion Wave is so good.

But caveats aside, when it comes to pairing pricing and value, Apple’s iMac is still the computer to beat.

Lately, we've seen PCs that are the size of USB flash drives, like the Intel Compute Stick. These have the benefit of disappearing behind an HDMI-equipped monitor or HDTV. You may be limited to one or two configurations and will have to give up expandability and I/O port selection, but stick PCs and similarly sized mini desktops are the most flexible way to play Internet streaming media and access cloud computing in your living room or conference room.

SFF desktops have more internal space, allowing you to attach additional hard drives and possibly even a gaming-grade graphics card. You'll also find more powerful CPUs here, with their more strenuous cooling requirements.

Traditional tower desktops, including mini, midsize, and full-size towers, have the most internal space, so you can install multiple hard drives, more RAM, or multiple graphics cards, depending on your needs. They are the most flexible, but also the bulkiest.

If you're on a tight budget but still want to be able to game, the Chillblast Fusion Drone is an outstanding choice, mixing modest processing performance with capable 3D graphics power. Supplied inside a classy-looking chassis, complete with a water-cooled AMD Athlon X4 860K processor, you won't find a water-cooled PC for less cash.

Graphics performance is provided by and AMD Radeon R7 370 with 2GB of memory. It just undercuts the Nvidia GeFoce GTX 960 in terms of graphics performance but is cheaper by about the same degree, meaning it's an excellent budget choice. With 8GB of RAM and a 1TB hybrid hard disk, Chillblast has created an extremely appealing package suited to gamers with only a little cash available to splash.

While we’re all delighted that the three companies are giving the desktop PC some thought, a lot still needs to be done if there’s any chance of making it as compelling as it once was.

The apparent underlying issue, for starters, is the performance. The products above feature inventive designs and brilliant displays, but none are as powerful as even the average gaming PC. Furthermore, the fans get unpleasantly loud under load, sound output is wanting, and the included mouse and keyboard are a major downside.

However, the biggest letdown with the three products is the cost. It might be easy to vindicate the exorbitant price tags with the sheer size of the machines, but there’s minimal chance a $4,000 PC could achieve mainstream success.

While mobile gear is certainly convenient when you’re trying to conduct business on the go, it’s nowhere near as convenient as a desktop when you’re trying to complete serious work in an office environment.

Sure, today’s laptops can run creative software, such as Adobe Photoshop or Premiere — but you won’t enjoy your time with these applications when fighting with your lap-top’s trackpad or puny screen real estate. To be used efficiently, creative software requires a powerful processor, a high-end graphics card, lots of screen real estate, and peripherals — a keyboard, a mouse, and maybe even a drawing tablet. A laptop with the required specs would either be insanely expensive or physically impossible (in the case of a much-larger screen). A desktop with decent specs, however, will be able to run this software just fine.

Sure, your phone, tablet or even laptop might conveniently fit in your pocket or backpack, but all these devices are fraught with compromises, whether it’s computing power, screen size, or, well, a really expensive price tag.

The so-called post-PC world is not yet upon us. But if you’re still not convinced, here are some reasons you shouldn’t give up your desktop any time soon.

The next generation of desktop computers should, therefore, perfectly balance looks, performance, functionality and price, to have even the slightest shot at a competitive place on the PC market.

A subcategory of entry-level desktops, the chromebox (and its all-in-one counterpart, the chromebase) is a desktop that runs on Google's Chrome OS. Both can be found for as little as $179, utilizing free and paid Google cloud services to store your files, install your programs, and manage your digital life. If you spend a large portion of your computing life online, they're a fine alternative to yet another inexpensive Windows desktop, but given that they typically have scant onboard storage (think 64GB maximum of flash storage), you'll need a good wireless connection to be able to access the cloud-based storage and apps.

The Asus Chromebox isn't for power users or even those who want a media streaming PC. You'll find a wide selection of Intel and AMD processors in this category, from the budget AMD Athlon X4 and Sempron, as well as Intel Celeron up to the slightly more expensive (and much more powerful) Intel Core i3 and i5 processors. You should look for a minimum of 4GB of RAM, while 2GB is acceptable for sub-$300 machines. Only 16GB of eMMC flash storage is found on the least expensive desktop, but 64GB of flash storage or a 500GB hard drive is a better option for most users.

If you want a proper gaming PC, you need to spend £1000 upwards. This kind of money will get you a Core i7 processor, and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 or GeForce GTX 1080 graphics card. These PCs will cope with all tasks, manufacturing PCB assembly and will easily play games at 1440p resolution, with more expensive models even managing 4K resolutions – check online benchmarks to make sure your chosen model can handle the games you want.

For all desktop PCs, you can expect to pay an extra £100 plus for a Full HD monitor, and more for higher-resolution models.

The PC industry in the UK started with independent boutique manufacturers, and manufacturing PCB assembly they’re still a big part. Typically, these manufacturers only sell a specific PC model for a short period, replacing and updating as new components become available. As a result, it’s hard to include specific models in this round-up.

That doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t buy a computer from one of these manufacturers. In fact, in many cases, you may well be better off doing so.

Boutique manufacturers typically build a PC carefully, choosing components from well-known brands to give the best performance at each price point. This can range from a high-performance budget PC to an amazing, super-powered gaming PC capable of 4K gaming at high frame rates. In addition, these PC manufacturers tune components, particularly at the high end, so you can buy a PC that’s pre-overclocked; you won’t get the same kind of performance from a big-name PC manufacturer.

With plenty of expansion slots, there's a lot of options to make your own upgrades too, although you might find that you can certainly cope with what you're given from the get go. Scoring a good strong 64 overall in our rigorous 4K benchmarking test, it's more than capable for the odd bit of photo and video editing. As you'd expect with a graphics card of this caliber, gaming performance was excellent, averaging 30fps with Metro:Last Light Redux on Very High settings with SSAO turned on. The Palicomp AMD Avenger is a great choice for first-time PC buyers, with some commendable performance considering the low price too.

High-end desktops offer top-of-the-line components, like the latest CPUs that will give you all the power you need for multimedia projects, loads of storage (a 512GB SSD or 1TB hard drive, but typically 2TB or more), 3D graphics capability for gaming, or a combination of all three. These high-performance machines typically start at $1,500, and can go up to $5,000 and beyond for workstations or gaming rigs with customized paint jobs and multiple GPUs.

Few PC manufacturers design desktops to look different, which is why it’s so refreshing to see the HP Pavilion Wave. With its spherical body and B&O branding on the front, it looks a little manufacturing PCB assembly like a high-end wireless speaker. Actually, it is.

At the smaller and shorter end of the PC tower spectrum, the Palicomp AMD Avenger contains some pretty modest components, given the cheap asking price. Packed with an AMD Athlon X4 880K processor, which interestingly has each of its four cores already overclocked to an impressive 4.5GHz. There's also a GTX 960 crammed inside too, along with a dual fan cooler.

The battle for the living room has hotted up, but Palicomp's Intel i5 Raven easily meets the demand of the manufacturing PCB assembly PC buyer who no longer wants to be trapped behind a desk. Indeed, the SilverStone case employed by this PC build is compact enough to fit in most reasonably sized media cabinets, and the supplied wireless Xbox 360 controller means you don't have to struggle with a keyboard and mouse when playing games.

Processor performance is reasonable, with a decent mid-range Intel Core i5-6400 supplied. Graphics performance is also excellent, with the 4GB Nvidia GeForce GTX 960 handling the latest games in Full HD resolution without much trouble. It's a solid choice for anybody who wants to game without being tied to a particular console.

The desktop PC (and to a lesser extent the laptop PC) were never things that we needed to have in the number we had them in the early 2000s. They’re poor tools for what people needed, but for a time, they were the only tools we had.

Desktop computers are beyond inconvenient. You can’t take them with you easily, they tie you not just to a specific building but a specific room in that building just to be able to use them. That’s less than ideal for lots of people.

What the desktop PC did for us, however, was give people the means to access the internet. In the days when internet use was growing rapidly, more and more people were finding a need to be able to interact with the internet. To do that, you needed a desktop PC, so people got one. As our needs for internet access grew, we moved from the “family computer” to the idea that each person had their own computer, but they were still mostly desktops because laptops were bulky/heavy things with small screens that were mainly made for professionals who needed to be mobile.

People, however, didn’t need a desktop PC. They just needed a way to interact with the internet.

During my high school junior year, five students had the opportunity to work as Summer Interns at one of the “Big Four” accounting firms, KPMG. Mrs. Brogan nominated me because she saw how hard I worked throughout the finance program and felt I was capable enough to excel in this role. With support and coaching, I successfully progressed through the interview process manufacturing PCB assembly and earned a spot as one of the five Summer Interns. Being in such a fast-paced work environment was nerve-wracking, but I stayed focused and reminded myself of the lesson my parents taught me. After successfully completing the summer internship at KPMG, I felt empowered to venture into other fields that piqued my interest, like social media marketing and writing. I sought out learning opportunities in various industries including the fashion and public relations industries. My parents’ words constantly echoed through my mind: “Have courage and take a risk!”

If you’ve ever spent any time looking for recommendations on a new computer, chances are someone has told you to “just build a desktop.” There’s a reason: building your own desktop is almost always cheaper than buying one from a manufacturer.

The problem, of course, is it that you need to get your hands dirty. But building a PC in 2017 is probably not as difficult as you imagine; it’s kind of like putting together a lego set. And we’re here to help.

One disclaimer: this is not meant to be an exhaustive guide for absolute beginners. There are plenty of those manufacturing PCB assembly on the interwebs; I like this one by Lifehacker and this one by Tom’s Hardware. Instead, this is for the tech-saavy user that already has a solid understanding of PC hardware (do you know what a PCI-E Slot is? Does DDR4 mean anything to you?), but has never taken it upon themselves to build a PC – or hasn’t done so in a while.

Like most kids, doing things alone scared me. As I grew up, that fear faded away. I saw the courage my parents had in immigrating to the United States, felt the encouragement of teachers like Mrs. Brogan, and experienced the rewards of having the courage to take risks. We should all heed the lessons my parents have taught me to propel ourselves forward, as professionals and as individuals. We should step out of our comfort zones more often, take more risks, and most of all be courageous.

Performance from the quad-core processor is exceptional, while the AMD graphics can power 3D applications and games at Medium settings with relative ease. The whole thing whispers along, as well, with its cooling fans barely audible no matter what you’re doing. This is a near-silent powerhouse.

The screen, meanwhile, is excellent, covering 100% of the sRGB colour gamut assembly and 98.6% of the DCI-P3 gamut used some video production settings.

We don’t really like the 1TB Fusion Drive and would strongly recommend paying a bit extra for a nice, fast SSD. You can upgrade to a 256GB SSD for £90, something we reckon is worth paying.

There are still plenty of desktop towers available off-the-shelf from retailers such as John Lewis, Currys PC World and Argos. You can also buy them directly from small British companies, assembly such as (in alphabetical order) Chillblast, PC Specialist and Scan, as well as from giant business suppliers such as Dell, HP and Lenovo. Zoostorm, another British company, sells through a range of outlets including Amazon, Argos and Tesco.

Part of the appeal of direct suppliers is that you can often customise PCs to get what you want. Unfortunately, the number of configuration options has fallen dramatically over the past five years, especially on the cheaper ranges. It can also be a bit of a nightmare trying to find out which parts you can upgrade yourself. If Crucial doesn’t know, you can always ask in the support forums for each PC.

Midrange desktops will stay functional longer, thanks to more CPU power and speed, memory for multitasking, storage, or a larger built-in screen. You will have to make some sacrifices, but even demanding users will be able to find a midrange system that will last them at least five or six years. Look for a capable AMD Ryzen 5 processor, or an Intel Core i5 CPU in this category, along with 8GB to 16GB of memory, and a 1TB hard drive or 256GB solid-state-drive (SSD) storage.

Desktops are one of the best PC options for use as a home or family computer and readily lend themselves to being part of a dedicated work space. As long as mobility isn't top of your priority assembly list for a home computer, a desktop or all-in-one computer might be assembly the best computer type to meet your needs. Additionally, since they typically have larger screens than a laptop or tablet — up to 30 inches in some cases — they're ideal for multitasking, with room for multiple windows open at the same time. Best Buy has options from a variety of trusted brands, so you can easily find a Dell Desktop or Asus Desktop to fit your price range, or check out computers from Lenovo, HP and more.

When connected to a monitor or TV, even the cheapest desktop computer can double as media storage for movies, music, pictures, and all your digital media. If you are planning to use your computer for gaming, a desktop option will let you swap out components and upgrade as games evolve and new hardware is required. Both desktop Macs and PCs offer lots of memory space, are easy to upgrade, have fast processors, use a mouse and don't require a battery.

There are many things to keep in mind when you start to weigh up your desktop PC options. To start with, you should consider the main user/users. Someone who requires no more than the ability to surf the Internet and watch videos or view pictures will not require more than a basic desktop computer.
