    A graphic card is a hardware component of motherboard which shows the data graphically after converting it in digital format. The best graphics card is the one that can strike a balance between high performance and a reasonable price.

    But really, if you want to play brand-new, AAA games at 4K with the best visuals, you’ll need a desktop PC equipped with a powerful graphics card—especially if you want to play your games with the in-game eye candy dialed all the way up. And if you’re investing in a 4K monitor or a 4K TV for gaming, you clearly want things to look as good as they can. Running games at 4K resolution but dialing down the detail and effects settings in your games is working at cross-purposes.

    And indeed, I found entire communities of people creating DIY setups that connected desktop graphics cards to their laptops via ExpressCard or mPCIe slots. It isn’t hard, either. Many do-it-yourselfers end up with a plug-and-play experience requiring little to no modification—though it takes some research first. When it’s done, however, you’ll be left with a console-toppling PC gaming setup for about the same price as a new Xbox One S, depending on which graphics card you choose. That’s far cheaper than building a whole new gaming desktop, and you can still take advantage of your laptop’s portability by disconnecting the eGPU hardware.

    If you want the fastest graphics card on the planet, it's a no-brainer: the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti wins, hands down. Okay, sure, the $1200 Titan Xp beats it, but that's nearly twice the price for 5 percent more performance. In our testing, the GTX 1080 Ti is over 30 percent faster than the GTX 1080, and more than twice as fast as the GTX 970 ... at least if you're running resolutions and settings that need this level of performance. Also good news is that 1080 Ti cards tend to be too costly to attract the attention of cryptocurrency miners, so cards are still available at MSRP.

    You can see quite clearly the problem with prices manufacturing PCB assembly on mainstream hardware right now. Other than budget cards like the GTX 1050/1050 Ti and RX 460 (and RX 560 if I were to test it), a lot of cards deliver less value for the money compared to a few months ago, and even used cards that are several years old are near the top of the charts. AMD GPUs remain in a bad state as far as supply/demand goes. The good news is that things are improving, and prices on RX 570/580 are much better now than last month. Another month or so and things might be back to 'normal.'

    The newcomer RX Vega cards obviously don't do so well, typical of high-end, high-price hardware. The GTX 1070/1080/1080 Ti are simply better values right now, not even factoring in the higher power requirements of Vega. AMD really needs to get the lower priced standalone Vega cards on shelves if they're to compete, though rumors of potentially higher mining performance may be impacting things here as well.

    To find out how much wattage your power supply pumps out, open your case and look for the standard identification sticker all power supplies have, which lists their basic info. While you're there you can also identify how many 6-pin and 8-pin PCI-E connectors are available.

    Picking the right power supply is even more important if you’re upgrading to a multi-card configuration, because you’ll likely need to buy a power supply rated for one or more kilowatts.     A video card is a piece of computer hardware that's rectangular in shape with numerous contacts on the bottom of the card and one or more ports on the side for connection to video displays and other devices.

    The video card installs in an expansion slot on the motherboard. While most video cards are of the PCIe format, video cards come in other formats as well, including PCI and AGP. These additional formats are older standards and don't communicate with the CPU and other components as quickly as PCIe.

    There are two real benefits of being able to run multiple graphics cards. The primary manufacturing PCB assembly reason is for increased performance primarily in games.     Integrated graphics means that the computer's ability to process visual data, such as in movies and video games, is handled by the motherboard. If the most complex visual processing you need your computer to do is watching a movie, integrated graphics will probably be sufficient.

    What makes the best graphics card? For PC gamers, it's a balance of price and performance.     Note that while value is important, the above charts show a skewed view of things. FPS per dollar/pound sounds like a reasonable measurement, but you also need to consider your current hardware, and how much performance you really want. If you're looking to game on a 1440p display, the excellent 'value' of a GTX 1060 3GB doesn't matter much when it typically falls well short of 60 fps. And if you're already using something like a GTX 970 or R9 390, the prospect of upgrading to a GTX 1080 or RX Vega 64 starts looking even more questionable

    Unless you need to remove an existing GPU, you first need to locate the PCI-E x16 slot closest to the heat sink of your processor. This will either be the first or second expansion slot on your motherboard.

    Make sure that there are no loose wires blocking your access to this slot. If you’re replacing manufacturing PCB assembly an existing graphics card, unplug any cables connected to it, remove the screw from its retention bracket on the rear interior of your PC case, and then remove the card. Most motherboards also have a small plastic latch on the end of the PCI-E slot that locks the graphics card in place.     Combined with the architectural improvements of Pascal, long-term we could see even greater improvements in performance compared to Maxwell. Pascal has better delta color compression, resulting in higher effective memory bandwidth by about 20 percent (according to Nvidia). Nvidia also revealed a tiling rendering optimization that enables better use of bandwidth, giving the Pascal cards an additional 25 percent or more memory bandwidth. GDDR5X clocked at 10 GT/s means the 320GB/s of actual memory bandwidth in practice works like 384GB/s, and the tiled rendering yields around 480GB/s (under the right workloads). Graphics preemption can be used to improve load balancing and time-sensitive work (eg, asynchronous time warp in VR), and Simultaneous multi-projection (doing up to 16 projections in a single pass) means in manufacturing PCB assembly VR workloads the GTX 1080 could actually end up being over twice as fast as the 980 Ti.

    Games are rarely bottlenecked by your CPU, but dozens of games every year will push your graphics card to its limits. It's the component you'll want to upgrade most frequently (though if you buy the right card, it should last you at least two years). For gaming systems, it's also likely the most expensive part in your build. On a practical budget, it's critical to find the graphics card with the best ratio of price to performance. That's why we've previously looked at cards in the $300/£250 range, though that's a no-man's-land right now thanks to crypto mining.

    Even with Nvidia now releasing the Titan Xp for nigh-on twice the price of the GTX 1080 Ti, this is still the card we'd realistically recommend for anyone desperate to get in on 4K gaming.

    If you want to be playing games at this Ultra HD 4K resolution then you’re going to need some serious graphics power to cope with the 8.3 million pixels you’ll be throwing around your screen. The step up from the two million pixels of 1080p, or even from the 3.7 million of 1440p, is massive, so you need something with the GPU juice of the GTX 1080 Ti to smooth out the jagged edges of 4K gaming.

    The better-designed graphics cards will come from the factory pre-overclocked to take advantage of the improved hardware and this is why we start to see differences in performance between graphics cards using the same GPU types.

    Think of a computer as a company with its own art department. When people in the company want a piece of artwork, they send a request to the art department. The art department decides how to create the image and then puts it on paper. The end result is that someone's idea becomes an actual, viewable picture.

    It also hits the sweet spot for graphical memory. The GTX 1060’s 3GB of GDDR5 should be just the right amount for 1080p gaming, although higher-resolution textures may push up against that limit. It’s also tied for the least expensive card certified for manufacturing PCB assembly virtual reality, at least until Oculus’ minimum specification program starts.

    The result is a card that has no trouble playing well optimized games like Battlefield 1 or Fallout 4 with the settings cranked. Even at 2,560 x 1,440, we saw average performance of 60 frames per second, or higher. It’s a tough battle between the GTX 1060 and AMD’s similarly priced RX 480, but ultimately we gave the Nvidia option the nod for beating the Radeon in terms of performance at the $200 price point.

    This is the first sub-$1,000 card that’s able to consistently deliver around 60fps at 3840 x 2160 with the bells and whistles of PC gaming firmly on. There are still exceptions to that rule, the punishing DirectX12 Deus Ex: Mankind manufacturing PCB assembly Divided with everything turned on is still able to bring the GTX 1080 Ti’s performance down to a slow grind.

    Gaming on a 4K monitor at native resolutions, especially on a sub 30-inch panel, means you can be a little more relaxed on such niceties as anti-aliasing. The tight pixel pitch of a 4K display means you shouldn’t experience too many obtrusive jaggies when running at 2x MSAA, as opposed to x4 or x8, for example. So even when tough game engines do out-muscle the GTX 1080 Ti’s GPU there will be some simple, non-invasive cuts to the graphics settings that will net you serious frame rate boosts.

    For raw performance, Nvidia's GTX 1080 is a killer card, easily outperforming all older cards, and prices have only gone down since the launch. It's overclockable, quiet, and efficient; more importantly, it's able to run every game we've tested at more than 60 frames per second at 1080p Ultra, and most games break 60 fps at 1440p Ultra. You can argue about price and whether or not you really need Ultra quality settings, but right now, the GTX 1080 is the best graphics card for the demanding gamer in all of us.

    These graphics card rankings are determined by performance in real-world PC gaming benchmarks. A benchmark is measured by the number of frames-per-second (FPS) a computer can achieve playing a certain game at a specified resolution and graphical settings.

    When we test graphics cards, we tend to focus on three major factors: feature set, performance, and price.

    Feature set is often determined by brand and platform, which we always consider as we review a card. It’s not just about whether it can handle a virtual reality headset, or how many monitors it supports. We check out graphical standard and API support, and special features like Nvidia’s Ansel, or AMD’s WattMan overclocking software.

    Nvidia’s inaugural Pascal-powered GPU was built to tackle gaming at manufacturing PCB assembly 3840 x 2160 and was the first GeForce card to really be able to deliver on that promise. The Maxwell-powered GTX Titan X, and subsequent GTX 980 Ti, got close to delivering 4K gaming, but the GTX 1080 took that just a little further. Though we’re still not talking about nailing 60fps in every modern game at the top settings here – that’s the purview of the new GTX 1080 Ti in all its glory.

    Across our testing suite the GTX 1080 is mostly operating in the range between 40fps and 60fps on average. Serious frame rate compulsives may baulk at such ‘low’ performance, but those results are with the post-processing and texture settings pushed pretty much as high as they’ll go in-game. When you’re paying this much for your graphics card the idea of compromising on image quality might be a painful one, but with some smart cuts here and there you’ll definitely be able to nail a solid 60fps.

    The GTX 1080 Ti is now manufacturing PCB assembly here, rocking the same GP102 GPU as the latest Titan X, making it the go-to 4K graphics card of today. But it still commands a more egregious price premium than the GTX 1080. Though I guess it all depends on how much you’re willing to spend in the pursuit of smooth Ultra HD gaming.

    Of course, performance is key. We run review units through a series of synthetic and real-world benchmarks, even beyond those we report. We keep detailed records of frame rate trends, frame times, and any anomalous activities, like noise, heat, or artifacts.

    Ultimately, it all comes down to cash. With so many GPUs, board partners, and differences in clock speed and memory, there’s no shortage of options, and it’s all too easy to overpay. We check the price of each individual card, and even help determine availability at launch.

    So, if you're the kind of enthusiast PC gamer who likes to jump on games on the day they're released, multi-GPU options aren't ideal solutions. You might run across issues with frame timing on multi-card or multi-GPU systems, as well, where onscreen game frames don't get delivered at exactly the right time, resulting in a subpar experience. For this reason, we generally recommend buying the best single card (or single-chip card) for the performance you're after, whenever possible.

    Whatever your budget, there’s a bewildering array of options when it come to graphics cards. With multiple variations on a theme from each vendor, coupled with impenetrable acronyms and an unpronounceable product names, choosing a graphics card can be a daunting task.

    But, stick to a few guidelines and the whole process becomes a lot easier.

    If you want to upgrade your PC with a high-performance card for gaming you'll need to be willing to spend anything ranging from around £100 right up to as much as some might consider spending on an entire PC. Budget then, will manufacturing PCB assembly be your first constraint.

    In a desktop, since the motherboard, case, and expansion cards are designed with compatibility in mind, the side of the video card fits just outside the back of the case when installed, making its ports (e.g. HDMI, DVI, or VGA) available for use.

    Some video cards have only one port for connection to a standard monitor or projector while more advanced cards may have ports for connections to multiple output sources including additional monitors and televisions.

    Still other cards may have inputs for video editing and other advanced tasks.

    Plus, Thunderbolt 3 and graphics cards have only recently started to play nicely together thanks to Intel’s Thunderbolt 3 external graphics compatibility technology, which PC makers must specifically enable.     High-end cards, like the Titans and the GTX 1080 Ti, are luxury components, the McLaren 650S of graphics cards, aspirational GPUs. Few will have been made, the costs are seriously prohibitive and I bet there are only a handful of gamers who've bought a Titan and thought ‘I’m glad I dropped a grand on that’ a year down the line.

    To us, what makes the best graphics card for you to buy right now is that heady mix of architectural elegance, impeccable gaming performance, and excellent value. An expensive card manufacturing PCB assembly isn’t necessarily bad value if it blazes a trail none can follow, nor is a cheap GPU inherently good value – as with all things PC gaming the best graphics card is all about striking the perfect balance.

    That said, it isn’t going to deliver top performance in every game. Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is by far the most demanding game we’ve tested, and the GTX 1060 delivered just 37 frames per second on average while running at ultra settings in 1080p. This video card is great in most situations, but at $200 to start and no more than $280 for the fastest incarnations, it’s not the most powerful available. If you want that – read on.

    A graphics card works along the same principles. The CPU, working in conjunction with software applications, sends information about the image to the graphics card. The graphics card decides how to use the pixels on the screen to create the image. It then sends that information to the monitor through a cable. ­

    Sometimes speed boosts are negligible, but on occasion a more radical redesign can achieve larger speed boosts, taking the graphics card into the same territory as non-overclocked cards from the next tier above.

    Factory overclocked cards can often therefore deliver excellent value for money.

    Most graphics card vendors have at least one model for each GPU with an enhanced and more efficient cooler which allows the underlying components to run faster without overheating, giving you increased frame rates. But it’s also important to consider manufacturing PCB assembly the noise output from the fans.

    AMD's current range is its RX 500 series of graphics cards, which is a relatively minor update to the RX 480, 470 and 460 from 2016. They are, in general, better value and faster than their predecessors and have a couple of new features including Radeon Chill that reduces power consumption.

    However, keep an eye out for the 400-series cards as they can be as fast (or faster) in certain games, so if you spy one at a low price, it could be the better buy.

    Since most people purchase graphics cards for their gaming capability, we view real gameplay benchmarks (as opposed to synthetic benchmarking programs) as the best way to measure the performance of a graphics card. Graphics card performance can vary from game to game, but this comparison table reflects the general rankings of each card.

    While the GTX 1080 is the card we'd recommend to most—but not all—PC gamers, that's primarily due to scarcity and pricing on the mainstream offerings. The GTX 1070 only costs about 10 percent less right now, but it's over 20 percent slower. Meanwhile the GTX 1060 6GB is a bit too slow in some games, particularly if you have a 1440p display. But if you can wait, the 1070 should return to its $350 MSRP in the coming months and reclaim our primary recommendation.

    The big disadvantage to running multiple graphics cards is the cost. With the top of the line graphics cards already pushing $500 or more, its very tough for consumers to be able to afford a second one. While both ATI and NVIDIA offer lower priced cards with the dual card capability, it is often better for the consumer to instead spend an equal amount of money on a single card with equal or sometimes better performance than two lower priced graphics cards.

    The other problem is that not all games can benefit from the multiple graphics cards. This has improved greatly since the first multiple card setups were introduced but some graphics engines still do not handle it well.

    In fact, some games might actually show a slight decrease in performance over a single graphics card. In addition to this, the AMD CrossFire setups have show a problem with frame pacing that while might show improved framerates in benchmarks but result in delayed frames and some stuttering.

    Today's graphics cards are very power hungry. Having two of them in the system can essentially double the amount of power required to run them in tandem. For instance, a single high end graphics card might require a 500 watt power supply to function properly. Having two of those same cards might end up needing around 850 watts.

    Most consumer desktops do not come equipped with such high wattage power supplies. As a result, it is important to be familiar with your computers wattage and the requirements before jumping into running multiple cards.

    Video games have much assembly higher processing demands for visual data. Integrated graphics will usually have lackluster performance in computer video games because it uses the resources from the CPU and RAM, which slows down the entire system. Graphics cards solve this problem by providing separate hardware that can plug into the motherboard dedicated solely to video processing. Video cards have their own processing (CPU) and memory (RAM) to conserve valuable resources, and generally even a low-end one will outperform almost any integrated graphics.

    Like all hardware, a video card requires a device driver in order to communicate with the operating system and other computer software. The same process you'd use to update any sort of hardware applies to updating a video card driver.

    EVGA’s GeForce GTX 1060 gaming card has new and innovative technology that makes it the best you're able to get the sub $250 price point. Utilizing NVIDIA’s new Pascal GPU architecture, the GTX 1060 offers excellent performance for the price (and even enough power to run virtual reality software and beyond). The 1060 consumes very little power; the likely gaming load is just 120-135W. Thanks to additional energy efficient designs, the card only requires a 400-watt power supply and a single six-pin power connector, which leads to less heat production overall.

    At just under seven inches long, the 1060 can more than handle games at Full HD scaling of 1920 x 1080 with details close to or at maximum settings for a frame rate of 60fps. It’s likely that you’ll also get the opportunity to assembly utilize scaling at 2560 x 1440 for some games, but doing so would require a reduction in quality settings. Beyond scaling, the 1060 offers more than enough juice to power through VR games on the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, opening the door to a whole new world of gaming. Additionally, the inclusion of 6GB of DDR5 memory and overclocking the boost speed from 1.7GHz to over 2GHz promises the average PC gamer a 15 percent faster performance than similar gaming cards.

    If you know what video card driver you need, you can go to directly to the manufacturer's website and manually download it. This is always the best way to get drivers because you can be confident that the driver is stable and doesn't contain any malware.

    The GeForce GTX 1080 Ti is the card you'll want to opt for, though, if you want butter-smooth frame rates at or above 60 frames per second (fps), rather than 30fps. Alternatively, you could pick up two GeForce GTX 1080 cards. In many games, that setup should deliver significantly better gaming performance than a single 1080 Ti card.

    Note, though, that if you do go the dual-graphics-card route, multi-graphics setups can introduce a host of side issues. Most games don't ship on launch day with the optimizations in place to take advantage of multiple-card or multiple-GPU graphics, and some games never deliver multi-graphics support at all.

    At the moment, to deliver smooth frame rates at high settings at 4K (that’s 3,840x2,160 resolution, for the record) with the most-demanding games, you’ll need to opt for one of the most powerful graphics cards available. These days, those cards include Nvidia’s new-architecture GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Founders Edition$699.99 at EVGA, the one-step-down Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 Founders Edition, or one of the many custom-cooled and/or overclocked models based on the GTX 1080 graphics processor (GPU). But those cards don’t come cheap, generally starting at above $699 for the Ti model, with the most basic versions of the GTX 1080 models now selling for around $500.

    Nvidia's GTX 1070 has been our top pick since it launched, but cryptocurrency miners have caused a shortage of the cards, resulting in prices that are nearly the same as the GTX 1080. If you're looking for a fast graphics card for gaming, right now the GTX 1080 is a much better buy. In short, the 1080 delivers excellent performance, and with the price reduction after the 1080 Ti launch it's now within reach of many gamers. It's also faster than anything AMD currently offers while using significantly less power, and RX Vega 64 fails to shake things up in any meaningful way.

    My desire to power up a laptop with an external graphics card began in, when I set out on a quest to get back into PC gaming—a beloved pastime I’d neglected since childhood.

    There’s no point picking up a Titan Xp if you’re only ever going to run it on a 1080p monitor and support it with a ropey AMD APU. Sure, you’ll still be able to nail 60fps, but you will have hobbled your expensive new GPU by saddling it with a poor processor and bottlenecking assembly it at a low resolution. At 1080p, your processor choice becomes very important – we’re at a time now where certain games are becoming CPU-limited at that resolution, and sometimes even at 1440p.

    Multiplayer Battlefield 4 is one such game and so is Total War: Attila – even with our test rig’s Core i7 6700K there is no difference in performance between a GTX 1080 and GTX 1070 because it’s the CPU holding things back. Switching to an 8-core 5960X though and frame rates push on much further. Intel processors are still currently your best bet for getting the most out of your card. AMD’s CPUs and APUs traditionally struggled to deliver enough single-threaded performance to keep the GPU fed and could significantly hold back a graphics card’s frame rate capability. That hasn't completely changed with the advent of Ryzen, with Intel still able to maintain a assembly performance lead in gaming terms, but there is much less of a difference between the CPU rivals these days.

    Your chosen display – or your next panel purchase – is also an important factor too. You’re not going to want to run your games on a 1080p monitor if you’ve just spent the best part of a grand on a new GPU. If you do only have a 1080p screen there’s little point spending more than £250 on a GPU unless you’re also looking to upgrade your monitor in the next 12 months.

    But the only PC I had at the time was a Lenovo ThinkPad X220 laptop with Intel HD 3000 integrated graphics. That just won’t cut it for proper PC gaming. Sure, the laptop would work well enough for older titles like Diablo III, especially on the laptop’s tiny 1366x728-resolution display—but forget about more graphics-intensive modern games on an external 1080p monitor. That’s why I decided to examine external graphics card (eGPU) setups.

    As a result, if you opt for an older AMD card and plan on plugging your PC into a 4K HDTV, you’ll be stuck doing things at 30Hz, or dialing the resolution back to 1080p. This will bother some buyers and gamers more than others. Many games are certainly playable at 30Hz. But competitive twitch gamers (think of titles like League of Legends and DOTA 2) will want a higher refresh rate in order to remain competitive. And even if you’re fine with playing games at 30Hz, you may be annoyed by things like choppy mouse-cursor movement if you’re computing or gaming on a 4K screen limited to just 30Hz.

    Historically, crypto-mining has been most effective on AMD GPUs, so they took the hit first, meaning it's still a struggle to find Polaris 10-based GPUs - and the ones you can find aren't cheap. That's why we're no longer recommending the 8GB Radeon RX 480 or 580 as the best graphics card right now. We've made the switch back to recommending Nvidia's GTX 1060 instead.

    But that's no real trauma as we originally had the GTX 1060 as our go-to GPU from when it launched. But when the prices of the 8GB RX 480 dropped dramatically, that became the card we'd recommend at this end of the market. When the Polaris cards were cheaper (and available) it made sense for them to take pole position, but even though prices for the GTX 1060 have risen now too (again thanks to the miners), they are at least there to buy. The GTX 1060 is also, for the most part, the faster GPU.

    The GTX 1060 doesn’t have everything its own way, however. The competing AMD Radeon RX 480 is generally a little off the pace by comparison, except when you start to throw new graphics APIs down its ample pipes. In the Hitman DX12 benchmark even the RX 470 is able to deliver gaming performance on par with the GTX 1060, while the RX 480 leaves it trailing in its volumetric dust. The same thing happens in Doom when using the Vulkan build, where the

    MIND THE VIDEO MEMORY. The other thing to watch for while shopping for a 4K-ready gaming card is the amount of dedicated video memory your card has. Generally, 2GB of memory is plenty if you’re gaming at 1080p or below. But when you step up to 4K, a graphics card needs to very quickly handle much more data. To keep your gaming sessions running smoothly at 4K and high detail settings, you’ll want a card with at least 4GB of memory.

    A card with 6GB or more can be a better bet, especially if you’re the type who likes to download game mods and/or high-resolution texture packs, which are sometimes specifically created to deliver a greater level of in-game detail for high-end cards that have extra memory capacity. But you usually need to specifically download these additional files, either from the game developer’s Web site, Steam, or other gaming-community sites.

    CONSIDER (AND MATCH) THE MONITOR. The first consideration has to do with the kind of display you’ll be using. If you opt for a 4K monitor with a DisplayPort input (which has the bandwidth to deliver 4K assembly content at 60Hz, or up to 60fps), any of the above options should serve you well. But if you are thinking of using a 4K television for a larger-screen (and sometimes lower-price) gaming display, you may not want to opt for an older AMD Radeon-based card.

    Graphics performance isn't the only consideration. The quality of game drivers and other features supported by the card are important. The card's noise level, power draw, and temperature matter, too. Thankfully, nearly all of the cards run fairly quiet, even under load, and temperatures are within the acceptable range as well—though Nvidia still has an advantage when it comes to power.

    From a high level, we tested each card on a high-end PC (4.5GHz overclocked i7-5930K), at 1080p medium, 1080p ultra, 1440p ultra, and 4K with ultra/high settings (depending on the game). We include results from assembly fifteen games, mostly newer releases, using the 'best' API for each GPU on each game. That means low-level APIs are mostly used for AMD cards, while DX12/Vulkan are only used in certain games for Nvidia cards.
