The three general categories of modern UPS systems are on-line, line-interactive and standby.[3][4] An on-line UPS uses a "double conversion" method of accepting AC input, rectifying to DC for passing through the rechargeable battery (or battery strings), then inverting back to 120 V/230 V AC for powering the protected equipment. When all power runs out, any data in your computer's random access memory (RAM) is erased. When power surges occur, a UPS intercepts the surge so that it doesn't damage the computer.

Its life cycle is usually far greater than a purely electronic UPS, up to 30 years or more. But they do require periodic downtime for mechanical maintenance, such as ball bearing replacement. In larger systems redundancy of the system ensures the availability of processes during this maintenance. Battery-based designs do not require downtime if the batteries can be hot-swapped, which is usually the case for larger units. Newer rotary units use technologies such as magnetic bearings and air-evacuated enclosures to increase standby efficiency and reduce maintenance to very low levels.

You won’t find many in-depth editorial reviews of the CP685AVR or most other battery-backup units. UPS comparison isn’t a sexy topic, and the units aren’t easy to test. But the company’s AVR Series has user reviews dating back almost 10 years. Although we’ve become wary of user-review averages for some product categories, CyberPower isn’t a no-name brand, and the UPS’s review distribution is what we expect to see for a good product with fair reviews—mostly five- and four-star ratings, trailing off until you get to a slight uptick of one-star reviews that (in our experience with customer reviews) often overrepresent the rate of failure. For the most part, users have found the CyberPower offering to be a competent UPS, which is about what you’d expect for a utilitarian device.

Our simulated workstation, drawing 300 W of power, was near the maximum output of both units. However, although each model is technically capable of providing that much output, we don’t recommend using more than 50 percent of a UPS’s maximum output if you want to get the best performance—real-time or long-term—out of the battery. Since battery life isn’t linear, a slightly higher draw can lead to a greatly reduced run time. Though both models in our tests ran a 50 W load for almost an hour, when powering our 300 W load the APC BE650G1 averaged only 5.6 minutes and the CyberPower CP685AVR squeaked out just 4.6 minutes. As with the 50 W test, these results are close enough to be a tie—in either case, that’s just enough time for you to quickly save your work and safely shut your computer down. (A small UPS simply isn’t meant for this level of power, so if you expect to draw over 100 W, you should step up to our more powerful pick instead.)

Sudden loss of power and power surges are two of the principle causes of damage to computers and other sensitive electronics. Even cheap power strips will do a decent enough job protecting against the power surges, but they offer no protection against drops in line voltage, brownouts, blackouts, and other power supply issues.

In order to protect your computer against power supply interruptions, you need a battery backup. UPS units are like power strips that contain a big battery inside, providing a buffer against power supply interruptions. This buffer can range from a few minutes to an hour or more depending on the size of the unit.

A simple way to think about the utility of a UPS unit is to think about working on a laptop. You’re at home, your laptop is plugged into an appropriate surge protection strip, and you’re busily manufacturing PCB assembly finishing up some reports for work. A summer storm knocks the power out. Although the lights go out, your work on the notebook computer is uninterrupted because the notebook switched over to battery power seamlessly when the flow of electricity from the power cord vanished. When power loss occurs, the rectifier simply drops out of the circuit and the batteries keep the power steady and unchanged. When power is restored, the rectifier resumes carrying most of the load and begins charging the batteries, though the charging current may be limited to prevent the high-power rectifier from overheating the batteries and boiling off the electrolyte. The main advantage of an on-line UPS is its ability to provide an "electrical firewall" between the incoming utility power and sensitive electronic equipment.

When investigators would like to view deleted data, a file system acquisition is called for. We’ll go over how this type of acquisition can recover deleted items in a moment. For many people, a UPS falls into the murky gray area between need and want. If you have a desktop computer or network-attached storage, you may need a UPS to prevent your drives from losing data in the event of a sudden power outage. A UPS makes sense in a lot of scenarios, but not in all of them. If all you’re looking for is surge protection, you have no need to spend money on a bulky UPS when better and less expensive surge-protection options are available. Neither is a UPS the right choice to keep an extensive home theater powered up, or to run most any household appliance—the UPS units we’re covering here don’t provide enough power. If your needs are on that scale, you might want to consider a home generator, or a battery system designed for off-grid power. Similarly, if you’re trying to figure out how to power electronics far from the grid, companies such as GoalZero and Renogy offer a more appropriate option.

Indiegogo and Kickstarter backers agreed with start-up ChargeTech that someone should make a better portable battery. The result was the PLUG, which more than met its funders expectations to become the best portable UPS on the market. When power fails the batteries drive the inverter, which continues to run the information technology (IT) load. When power is restored, either from the utility or a generator, the rectifier delivers direct current (DC) to the inverter and simultaneously recharges the batteries. The inverter runs full time. Utility input is completely isolated from the output, and bypass is only used for maintenance safety or if there's an internal electronics failure. Since there is no break in the power delivered to the IT equipment, vacuum fault interrupter (VFI) is generally considered the most robust form of UPS. Most systems synchronize the output frequency with the input, but that's not necessary, so it still qualifies as frequency independent.

This type of UPS is able to tolerate continuous undervoltage brownouts and overvoltage surges without consuming the limited reserve battery power. It instead compensates by automatically selecting different power taps on the autotransformer. Depending on the design, changing the autotransformer tap can cause a very brief output power disruption,[6] which may cause UPSs equipped with a power-loss alarm to "chirp" for a moment.

This has become popular even in the cheapest UPSs because it takes advantage of components already included. The main 50/60 Hz transformer used to convert between line voltage and battery voltage needs to provide two slightly different turns ratios: One to convert the battery output voltage (typically a multiple of 12 V) to line voltage, and a second one to convert the line voltage to a slightly higher battery charging voltage (such as a multiple of 14 V). The difference between the two voltages is because charging a battery requires a delta voltage (up to 13–14 V for charging a 12 V battery). Furthermore, it is easier to do the switching on the line-voltage side of the transformer because of the lower currents on that side.

However, keep in mind that many UPS units only provide surge protection on some ports. The outlets powered by the battery will likely be less than the maximum number of ports. Inexpensive options often manufacturing PCB assembly cut costs by only providing battery backup to four or six outlets, leaving the remainder unpowered. That’s won’t be a problem for everyone, but it can be a nasty surprise if you learn about it the first time the power goes out. Fortunately, you’ll notice just by looking at the UPS whether or not it has ports without backup power.

When incoming power fails, or the voltage goes out of range, the bypass quickly disconnects from the input and the battery drives the inverter. When input power is restored, the bypass re-engages the input, re-charges the batteries, and keeps output voltage constant. UPS vendors who use paralleled power sources claim no loss of reliability. A rotary UPS uses the inertia of a high-mass spinning flywheel (flywheel energy storage) to provide short-term ride-through in the event of power loss. The flywheel also acts as a buffer against power spikes and sags, since such short-term power events are not able to appreciably affect the rotational speed of the high-mass flywheel. It is also one of the oldest designs, predating vacuum tubes and integrated circuits.

This type of UPS is able to tolerate continuous undervoltage brownouts and overvoltage surges without consuming the limited reserve battery power. It instead compensates by auto-selecting different power taps on the autotransformer. Changing the autotransformer tap can cause a very brief output power disruption,[citation needed] so the UPS may chirp for a moment, as it briefly switches to battery before changing the selected power tap.[dubious – discuss]

If the battery wears out in two years or less, you may want to consider the next level up in topology, or a different type of battery.

The UPS itself should be good for five to eight years, but, like most electronics, newer ones will be more efficient and offer more features. So it may be worth replacing the entire UPS instead of just the battery.

Remember, buying a good UPS once every three or four years (and a fresh battery every two years) costs you about a dollar or so a week. One power event can interrupt a critical task, mean hours of lost productivity, or hundreds of dollars in hardware damage. That UPS is a business expense: Don't be a short-sighted cheapskate.

This has become popular even in the cheapest UPS because it takes advantage of components already included. The main 50/60 Hz transformer used to convert between line voltage and battery voltage needs to provide two slightly different turns ratios: one to convert the battery output voltage (typically a multiple of 12 V) to line voltage, and a second one to convert the line voltage to a slightly higher battery charging voltage (such as a multiple of 14 V). Further, it is easier to do the switching on the line-voltage side of the transformer because of the lower currents on that side.

To gain the buck/boost feature, all that is required is two separate switches so that the AC input can be connected to one of the two primary taps, while the load is connected to the other, thus using the main transformer’s primary windings as an autotransformer. Note that the battery can still be charged while “bucking” an overvoltage, but while “boosting” an undervoltage, the transformer output is too low to charge the batteries.

Alternatively, you can look at the power supply rating for your computer as a measure of the maximum power the computer will pull. It’s important to note, however, that a 400w power supply is not pulling a constant load of 400w. Our home server has a 400w power supply, but when measured with a Kill-a-Watt measuring tool, it has a peak startup load of a little over 300w and a consistent operating load of only around 250w.

If you’re looking to be very conservative in your power estimation needs, go with the maximum rating of the PSU and peripherals (this way you’ll end up with extra battery life instead of too little battery life). Alternatively, you can increase the precision of your calculations by using a measuring device and allocate more of your budget toward UPS unit features you want and less toward buying a bigger battery.

Regardless of whether you use the less precise or more precise method, you’ll have a wattage value. For our calculation examples, we’re going to use 400w as our value.

In telecommunication, Carrier Class Reliability is a measure of system resilience to failure. Systems are designed to stay up regardless of internal or external failures. Power failure, an external factor, is handled by redundant power systems (UPSs). These systems provide backup power to standard telecommunication rectifier power supplies and therefore are called telecom rectifier UPSs. A key factor in keeping telecommunication system operational is reliable power supply design.

In telecommunication, carrier class is the name of the standard for the highest level of reliability and availability. The standard calls for 99.999% availability. This standard, also called “five nines”, is a system availability target. Such a high reliability target can only be attained through the use of rectifier UPS sub-systems, continuous system monitoring, and program of regular preventive maintenance. Telecom rectifier UPS systems are used in a wide range of applications to achieve carrier class reliability. In applications where carrier class reliability is not required, UPS systems are still useful in assuring overall system reliability and superior operational reliability.

Autotransformers can be engineered to cover a wide range of varying input voltages, but this requires more taps and increases complexity, and expense of the UPS. It is common for the autotransformer to only cover a range from about 90 V to 140 V for 120 V power, and then switch to battery if the voltage goes much higher or lower than that range.

In low-voltage conditions the UPS will use more current than normal so it may need a higher current circuit than a normal device. For example to power a 1000 watt device at 120 volts, the UPS will draw 8.32 amps. If a brownout occurs and the voltage drops to 100 volts, the UPS will draw 10 amps to compensate. This also works in reverse, so that in an overvoltage condition, the UPS will need fewer amps of current.

It can be considered to be on line since it spins continuously under normal conditions. However, unlike a battery-based UPS, flywheel-based UPS systems typically provide 10 to 20 seconds of protection before the flywheel has slowed and power output stops.[10] It is traditionally used in conjunction with standby generators, providing backup power only for the brief period of time the engine needs to start running and stabilize its output.

New VFD concepts have the inverter producing power within 2 ms after being activated. The bypass is normally engaged, just as with VI, so equipment operates directly from the utility or generator. Since the inverter isn't working until power fails, there is no voltage control or power consumed, enabling efficiencies as high as 99%. Power failure or voltage outside of range opens the bypass switch, disengaging input from output; the inverter starts operating from the batteries. The rectifier is only large enough to keep the batteries charged.

The rotary UPS is generally reserved for applications needing more than 10,000 W of protection, to justify the expense and benefit from the advantages rotary UPS systems bring. A larger flywheel or multiple flywheels operating in parallel will increase the reserve running time or capacity.

Because the flywheels are a mechanical power source, it is not necessary to use an electric motor or generator as an intermediary between it and a diesel engine designed to provide emergency power. By using a transmission gearbox, the rotational inertia of the flywheel can be used to directly start up a diesel engine, and once running, the diesel engine can be used to directly spin the flywheel. Multiple flywheels can likewise be connected in parallel through mechanical countershafts, without the need for separate motors and generators for each flywheel.
