    The first digital pocket watch was the invention of Austrian engineer Josef Pallweber who created his "jump-hour" mechanism in 1883. Instead of a conventional dial, the jump-hour featured two windows in an enamel dial, through which the hours and minutes are visible on rotating discs. The second hand remained conventional. By 1885 Pallweber mechanism was already on the market in pocket watches by Cortébert and IWC; arguably contributing to the subsequent rise and commercial success of IWC. The principles of Pallweber jump-hour movement had appeared in wristwatches by the 1920s (Cortébert) and are still used today (Chronoswiss Digiteur). While the original inventor didn't have a watch brand at the time, his name has since been resurrected by a newly established watch manufacturer.[1]

    Plato clocks used a similar idea but a different layout. These spring-wound pieces consisted of a glass cylinder with a column inside, affixed to which were small digital cards with numbers printed on them, which flipped as time passed. The Plato clocks were introduced at the St. Louis World Fair in 1904, produced by Ansonia Clock Company. Eugene Fitch of New York patented the clock design in 1903.[2] 13 years earlier Josef Pallweber had patented the same invention using digital cards (different from his 1885 patent using moving disks) in Germany (DRP No. 54093).[3] The German factory Aktiengesellschaft für Uhrenfabrikation Lenzkirch made such digital clocks in 1893 and 1894.[4]

    The earliest patent for a digital alarm clock was registered by D.E Protzmann and others on October 23, 1956, in the United States. Protzmann and his associates also patented another digital clock in 1970, which was said to use a minimal amount of moving parts. Two side-plates held digital numerals between them, while an electric motor and cam gear outside controlled movement.[2]

    In 1970, the first digital wristwatch with an LED display was mass-produced. Called the Pulsar, and produced by the Hamilton Watch Company, this watch was hinted at two years prior when the same company created a prototype digital watch for Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey.[5] Throughout the 1970s, despite the initial hefty cost of digital watches, the popularity of said devices steadily rose.

    Over the years, many different types of digital alarm clocks have been developed.

    In Soviet Russia, the 7-segment digital clocks were known as Elektronika 7.

    Digital clocks typically use the 50 or 60 hertz oscillation of AC power or a 32,768 hertz crystal oscillator as in a quartz clock to keep time. Most digital clocks display the hour of the day in 24-hour format; in the United States and a few other countries, a more commonly used hour sequence option is 12-hour format[citation needed] (with some indication of AM or PM). Some timepieces, such as many digital watches, can be switched between 12-hour and 24-hour modes. Emulations of analog-style faces often use an LCD screen, and these are also sometimes described as "digital".

    To represent the time, most digital clocks use a seven-segment LED, VFD, or LCD for each of four digits. They generally also include other elements to indicate whether the time is AM or PM, whether or not an alarm is set, and so on.

    This application note describes how to make a digital clock based on 3 GreenPAKs (SLG46620V), an external crystal, four 7-segment displays and 60 LEDs to display seconds. It is capable of operating via an internal battery when the main power is lost, and shutting down the display for battery power savings. It also includes an internal every-hour buzzer which can be turned OFF.

    Figure 1 shows the completed device’s appearance.

    Go to the online JavaScript Conway life simulator. Click import, paste the design text. You should see the design. Then, go to settings and set the generation step to 512, or something around those lines, or you'll have to wait forever to see the clock display updating.

    Note that the only algorithm that makes this huge design useable is hashlife. But with this, you can achieve the whole clock wraparound in seconds. With other algorithms, it is impractical to even see the hour changing.

    How it works

    It uses p30 technology. Just basic things, gliders and lightweight spaceships. Basically, the design goes top-down:

    At the very top, there's the clock. It is a 11520 period clock. Note that you need about 10.000 generations to ensure the display is updated appropriately, but the design should still be stable with a clock of smaller period (about 5.000 or so - the clock needs to be multiple of 60).
    Then, there is the clock distribution stage. The clock glider is copied in a balanced tree, so at the end, there are 32 gliders arriving at the exact same moment to the counters stage.
    This must be done in a way which is most appropriate for the game and the sport concerned. DGT clocks offer many different methods for the timing of a game. While several methods are well-known, others may be less familiar. Some of these methods have been in use for a long time; others are the result of the possibilities offered by modern electronics. Each timing method has its own charm and each has a different influence on the manner in which a sport is experienced.

    In chess the traditional “blitz” game of 5 minutes per person is different from 3 minutes using “Delay” or “Bonus” when every move attracts an extra couple of seconds of thinking time, although the total thinking time for a game may not be much different.

    The counter stage is made using a RS latch for each state, and for each digit (we're counting in decimal). So there is 10 states for the right digit of the minutes, 6 states for the left digit of the minuts, and 12 states for the hours (both digits of the hours are merged here). For each of these groups, the counter behaves like a shift register.
    After the counting stage, there are the lookup tables. They convert the state pulses to display segments ON/OFF actions.
    Then, the display itself. The segments are simply made with multiple strings of LWSS. Each segment has it own latch to maintain its state. I could have made a simple logical-OR of the digit states to know wether a segment must be ON or OFF, and get rid of these latches, but there would be glitches for non-changing segments, when the digits are changing (because of signal delays). And there would be long streams of gliders coming from the lookup table to the digit segments. So it wouldn't be as nice-looking. And it needed to be. Yes.
    Anyway, there is actually nothing extraordinary in this design. There are no amazing reactions that have been discovered in this process, and no really clever combinations that nobody thought of before. Just bits taken here and there and put together (and I'm not even sure I did it the "right" way - I was actually completely new to this). It required a lot of patience, however. Making all those gliders coming up at the right time in the right position was head-scratching.

    The Digital Clock block outputs the simulation time only at the specified sampling interval. At other times, the block holds the output at the previous value. To control the precision of this block, set the Sample time parameter in the block dialog box.

    Use this block rather than the Clock block (which outputs continuous time) when you need the current simulation time within a discrete system.

    The CTH10 is an attractive wall clock features an oversized 4.3" (109mm) digit time display that can be easily view from a longer distance than regular sized clocks. It receives Time Code from NIST Radio Station WWVB and it automatically adjusts year, date, day, hour, minute, second, and Daylight Savings Time. In addition, it also measures Temperature and Relative Humidity! Perfect for desktop or wall mount display. This clock meter also features automatic adjust for daylight savings time (DST), programmable alarm clock with snooze feature, and a built-in stand for desktop or wall-mount. Complete with built-in stand and three C size batteries

    Now that you've built the circuit on a breadboard transfer it to a prefboard so you can house everything inside a box. it wouldn't be that hard to copy everything onto a prefboard. But keep in mind do not solder the pushbuttons on the prefboard itself, using some wire extend the pushbuttons so that we can stick it outside the box

    Since we have built the clock mechanism, display and all let's build a body to house all our electronics. I prefer using cardboard for making it because it's much easier to use and best of all it's bio-degradable.

    Making the Box

    We are going to make a box that houses all our electronics, Arduino, etc. The required dimensions of the box are 8cm (length) x 5cm(breadth) x 4cm(height)

    Copy the template onto the cardboard either by drawing the diagram onto the cardboard or by printing the (the real box template) template given below on an A4 sheet and then sticking it onto the cardboard.
    Cut out the template.
    Cut out the 'x' marked rectangle so that LCD display can be seen.
    Cut along the red line so that we can fold everything to make a box.
    Place the electronics inside the box.
    Fold up everything and stick them using hot glue.
    Cut holes so that you can take pushbuttons out and stick them on the side of the box and to connect 12 v adapter to power the electronics.
    Building the circles

    Wondering why I chose this kind of design?

    It's because I'm planning to add some more features to this clock and when I finish it, I'll let you guys know.

    Time forms an integral and exciting part of every sport, especially in mind sports and games such as Chess, Go, Draughts (Checkers), Shogi, Stratego, Othello and Scrabble™. The difference in skill and playing strength between players is not only determined by the potential performance level and decisions each individual player takes, but also by the time a player needs to reach this level and to make the decisions. The more a sport is seen as a measure of performance, the more important it is to limit the time a player needs to make a move.

    Data Type Support
    The Digital Clock block outputs a real signal of type double. For more information, see Data Types Supported by Simulink in the Simulink® documentation.

    Parameters
    Sample time
    Specify the sampling interval. The default value is 1 second. For more information, see Specifying Sample Time in the Simulink documentation.

    Do not specify a continuous sample time, either 0 or [0,0]. Also, avoid specifying -1 (inheriting the sample time) because this block is a source.

    Possible optimizations:

    Instead of copying and distributing the same root clock to the n counter cells, I could have just put the same clock block n times (once for each counter cell). This would actually be much simpler. But then I wouldn't be able to adjust it as easily by changing the clock at a single point... And I have an electronics background, and in a real circuit, that would be horribly wrong.
    Each segment has it own RS latch. This requires the lookup tables to output both R and S pulses. If we had a latch that would just toggle its state from a common input pulse, we could make the lookup tables half as big. There is such a latch for the PM dot, but it is huge, and I'm unable to come up with something more practical.

    Clock Schematic Analysis

    The entire clock schematic can be divided into a few parts. The main power supply (not described here) is responsible for transforming 100-250VAC down to 7-15VDC; DC power supply which includes a 5V LDO, 3V battery (CR2032), 2 Schottky diodes, a voltage divider (R3 and R4) and 3 capacitors for proper LDO operation. The voltage divider creates a PwrDet signal which monitors the main power (5V). If the main power is present, the clock operates in normal mode. If the main power is absent (clock is not plugged to the wall), the clock operates using the internal battery (3V), but the time information is not displayed on the 7-segment displays and LEDs to conserve battery life. The clock oscillator source includes a 32.768 kHz crystal oscillator, two resistors and two capacitors. This scheme is based on the Pierce oscillator, and component values are chosen for the best accuracy. The clock includes 3x SLG46620V chips which communicate with each other. Each chip corresponds to some part of the functionality. The clock has 4 buttons; 3 of them are simple (unfixed) and correspond to setting time, whereas 1 button is fixed and corresponds to turning the buzzer ON/OFF.

    If people find difficulty in setting the time in some designs of digital clocks in electronic devices where the clock is not a critical function, they may not be set at all, displaying the default after powered on, 00:00 or 12:00.[6][7]

    Digital clocks that run on mains electricity and have no battery must be reset every time the power has an accident or if they are moved. Even if power is cut off for a second, most clocks will still have to be reset. This is a particular problem with alarm clocks that have no "battery" backup, because even a very brief power outage during the night usually results in the clock failing to trigger the alarm in the morning.

    To reduce the problem, many devices designed to operate on household electricity incorporate a battery backup to maintain the time during power outages and during times of disconnection from the power supply. More recently, some devices incorporate a method for automatically setting the time, such as using a broadcast radio time signal from an atomic clock, getting the time from an existing satellite television or computer connection, or by being set at the factory and then maintaining the time from then on with a quartz movement powered by an internal rechargeable battery. Commercial digital clocks are typically more reliable than consumer clocks. Multi-decade backup batteries can be used to maintain time during power loss.
