The use of flexible LED strip lights is rapidly rising in modern lighting design around the world. Architects and lighting designers are implementing LED strip lights into residential, commercial, and industrial projects at an increasing rate. This is due to an increase in efficiency, color options, brightness, and ease of installation. A homeowner can now design like a lighting professional with a complete lighting kit and an hour or two.

Our High-Density LED Flex Strips are perfect for lighting professionals as well as home owners with a do-it-yourself attitude. They are easy to use, making it possible to install yourself even with minimal knowledge on the electrical side. The strips are sealed in silicone, making them waterproof (IP65 Rated) so they can be used for outdoor applications or in areas where they might be exposed to water (kitchens, bathrooms, etc.). They come with double-sided 3M adhesive tape, adding to the ease of installation. They must be powered from 12VDC and NO LED DRIVER IS REQUIRED.

Simply unroll the strip light and cut to the appropriate length. Then, remove the adhesive backing and stick into place. We’ve also included clips and hardware for more custom installations.

LED strip lights most commonly operate on 12 or 24 volts of direct current from a power supply, sometimes referred to as a driver. USB strip lights operate on the standard 5-volt direct current used by USB devices. Mains voltage LED strips are also available. These have the advantages of being usable in much longer single runs without a brightness drop along the length, but are less flexible and heavier due to higher voltage and current ratings and thick coatings for shock safety and high IP ratings in their intended outdoor positions, with limited cut points. No separate power supply is needed, although there must be a rectifier between the mains supply and the end of the LED strip. The most common PCB designs use multiple parallel circuits consisting of passive dropper resistors in series with a certain number of LED SMDs, to operate at a certain current and power level with the expected input voltage. This design is referred to as constant-voltage and is rather sensitive to small variations in input

The number you are looking for is AMPS.
Take the total WATTAGE of the line of LED Strips for the type of LEDs you desire,
DIVIDE that number by the VOLTAGE (in your case 12V, Car battery is actually 13.5 but close enough)
The resulting figure EQUALS the AMPERAGE of line.
The Fuse you will require is typically + 50%

Use the flat head and remove the push clip in the fender skirt and pull it back. Then reach in and remove the parking light (make sure you get the one that only has 2 wires. I then used a razor to slice the black tubing about 1" that covered the wires to make accessing them easier.

Available in warm white, natural white or cool white LED.

Second, to get high density, the controller chip is inside the LED, which is kind of cool, but also means that the chip only uses a single pin for input and a single pin for output. The protocol used is very very timing-specific and can only be controlled by microcontrollers with highly repeatable 100nS timing precision. We have example code for using with the Arduino Uno/Mega microcontroller at 8MHz and 16MHz, and with a little effort you can use with the Raspberry Pi, or Beagle Bone Black, but it will not work with the Basic Stamp, NETduino, any other interpreted/virtual machine microprocessor or any processor slower than 8 MHz. For those processors, check our DotStar digital LED strip which has SPI-like input/output and works easily with Pi, NETduino, and other processors.

Alternative design is the "constant current" design where each parallel circuit of several SMDs includes a small integrated circuit to provide a fix current to that group of LEDs, within a wide range of applied voltages. These flexible SMD LED consume very little energy but provide a powerful bright light, and under ideal conditions of optimal temperature, current and voltage the average lifetime of flexible LED SMD light strips can reach up to an amazing 100.000 hours.

The wide selection of colour options gives flexibility in design which is essential to create light scenarios for several areas onboard a vessel - for both indoor and outdoor applications. AL45 LED strips can be built into ceilings, walls, floors and as step lighting indoor. Outdoor it can be used for logos, paths and as decorative lighting.

Now let's take a closer look at the differences between a flexible 3528 LED lighting strip and it's more powerful cousin the 5050 type SMD LED strip and compare their features:

Basically, the flexible SMD 3528 LED light strips consists of only LED light emitting chip per lighting source, whereas the far more powerful 5050 SMD feature 3 chips in one housing, and because of this they are sometimes also called tri-chips or triple core LED strips.

These strips can be purchased in 3-foot increments up to 16.4 feet long (1 full reel). However, we realize that all applications have different lengths which is why the strips are actually cuttable every 3 LEDs (2 inches). There is a thin black line between solder pads, which marks where you are to cut the strips

2. Color Quality and Accuracy - When you purchase a 'warm white' producing LED strip light you should not expect to get a bright white color from the LEDs. Ask for test reports that prove the color you are purchasing is what will arrive.

SMD 3528 LED lighting strips have this name because the dimension of the single chip is 3.5mm x 2.8mm, and they are often found in indoor applications such as in bars and restaurants, living room decorations and more basic illumination projects with lower luminosity or mono-color requirements and especially also when cost-controlling is the important and in order to save more power.

To sum it up, the SMD 3528 chips are more power-saving and cost effective but not as bright as the SMD 5050.

Flexible SMD 5050 LED lighting strips are high-performance, bright and have a wider array of options such as their availability in single colors and also as a RGB color-changable type. The SMD 5050 RGB version requires an additional control unit but features highly flexible multi-color mode and can easily be adjusted into various colors and color combinations. SMD 5050 is about 3x brighter than the SMD 3528 type and is often used where higher light-levels are needed and can be used as a replacement for traditional fluorescent light tubes.

Less common designs may have 3014, 4014, 7020, 8020, or other SMDs.

CCT (Correlated Color Temperature) refers to the color temperature of light, measured in degrees Kelvin (K). The temperature rating directly affects what the white light will look like; it ranges from cool white to warm white. For instance, a light source that has a 2000 – 3000 K rating is seen as, what we call, warm white light. Warm white light looks very orange and/or yellow. When increasing the degrees Kelvin, the color will change from yellow to yellowish white to white and then a bluish white (which is the coolest white). You can now put your parking light bulb back into the lamp, and replace the fender skirt.

Now you need to apply the double sided tape to the LED strip. The thin double sided tape from 3m fit the width perfectly. **I made the mistake of putting the double sided tape on them first and one of my LED's wires go towards the grill instead of the parking light which left excess wire in the engine bay and 3M tape is a pain in the ass to remove.

Now you can pull the backing off of the 3m tape and apply it the way you want it to your headlight. I followed the etched line in the headlight with my LEDs because it flows perfectly with the hood.
Wire tie any excess wires under the hood and repeat for opposite side.

Lets assume your running boards are 2 Meters (about 6' 6" long).
and you will be using a 3529 strip which uses 5 Watts per Meter
2 x 5 = 10 watts per each running board
10 Watts divided by 12 Volts = .83 Amps
(10 / 13.5 = .740 Amps, as I said, close enough)
(if volts go up, amps go down, watts always stay the same)

If you used one fuse for each side you would need a 1.66 Amps fuse. (.83 + 50%)
1.5A fuse would be fine

Both the SMD 3528 and the more powerful SMD 5050 version are usually supplied in 5 meter reels, with the average power consumption of SMD 3528 being ca. 5W per meter, while SMD 5050 consumes more power and a ca. 7.5W per meter, while sometimes LED manufacturers might also offer extra powerful ultra-white SMD 5050 LED light strips that can emit up to 720lm per meter with a power usage of up to 14.5W per meter.

From a cost perspective, the more powerful SMD 5050 LED light strips are more expensive however and for illumination settings that require high luminosity one would mostly opt for SMD 5050 because the cost per lumen is lower than with SMD 3528.

Internal wires in strip contain copper, improving product performance and lifespan.

LED strips, also known as "LED tape" or "ribbon lights" are used to produce lines of light, a method that has been adopted as a principal way to illuminate interiors. A line of light can be obtained via a LED strip hidden from view inside a cove in the wall or ceiling that illuminates an adjacent surface. Light is reflected from this surface into the space that has to be illuminated. That is why lines of light are commonly known as cove or indirect lighting.

These 120V LED Strip Lights are dimmable with most commercially available wall mounted dimmers.

Sometimes you may need to cut small strip sections where there is a break in your application. You can still run small strips together using 24 gauge wire to run them in series (end-to-end). TAKE NOTE: You may only run strips in series up to 16.4 feet long (1 reel) as after this the voltage drop becomes too great and you will lose light and efficiency from your system. If your application needs over 16 feet you will have to get another power supply or run wire from the extra strip directly back to the first power supply (wiring in parallel).

Connections can be made by soldering wire in between strips or by using solderless clamps (see right). Only one end of the strips come with wires on it so if you want to make more connections you will need to solder or use solderless connectors.

These LED strips are even more fun and glowy. There are 60 RGB LEDs per meter, and you can control each LED individually! Yes,manufacturing that's right, this is the digitally-addressable type of LED strip. You can set the color of each LED's red, green and blue component with 8-bit PWM precision (so 24-bit color per pixel). The LEDs are controlled by shift-registers that are chained up down the strip so you can shorten or lengthen the strip. Only 1 digital output pin are required to send data down. The PWM is built into each LED-chip so once you set the color you can stop talking to the strip and it will continue to PWM all the LEDs for you.

Third, just because you have all those pixels doesn't mean you have the RAM for it - the entire strip must be buffered in memory, and we've found many Arduino UNO projects only have about 1500 bytes of RAM available after all the extras are included - enough for about 500 LED pixels. If you want to drive the entire strip and have some other libraries included, use a Mega.
