The Logi ZeroTouch Air Vent Car Mount and Dashboard Cell Phone Holder are very good at what they do. Of the two, we prefer the more discreet Air Vent model, as it works in more cars; the obelisk-shaped Dashboard unit draws attention to itself and might invite some GPS-unit-snatchers to take a closer look. One big drawback for both is Android exclusivity—iOS doesn’t currently allow accessories to control your phone the way Android does. The other major drawback is price: The Air Vent Car Mount costs almost six times what other great car mounts do. For the features it provides, however, the investment may very well be worth it if you’re an Android user.

Later, at CNET's Car Tech Lab (ahem, my desk), the Vu fared significantly better, juicing the Nexus 5's battery from 15 percent to full in about an hour with the screen off. A second test with the screen locked on took the battery from 25 percent to full in about 3 hours. I should note that my phone got fairly warm during my screen on testing, reaching about 111 degrees F (about 44 degrees C) at its hottest point.

Our survey turned up some very interesting results. Not surprisingly, almost everyone–98% of respondents–uses their smartphone for maps and GPS directions in the car. But where people currently mount their phones mounted varies much more than we expected. Of those who already own a mount, that mount is likely located on an air vent (28%), the dashboard (27%), or the windshield (26%), with only 12% using the CD-player slot. The most surprising result, however, was that while nearly 90% of respondents’ cars have CD players, those people play CDs only 5.7% of their time in the car, on average—most people never use the CD player, while those who do tend to use it fairly often, pulling the average up. We also found that 70% of respondents use a case on their smartphone (a little bit lower than the 78% Apple executives noted during 2012 court testimony).

With this information in hand we felt much more confident in making our decisions. The first step was to decide on a mounting style from the three major options: windshield/dashboard, air vent, or CD slot. We mounted ruled out the first for a few reasons. Windshield and dash mounts generally use a suction cup to attach to those surfaces. Mounting to your windshield generally gives you a sturdy setup, but it mounted means that the mount and your smartphone partially block your view of the road. (Some people also dislike the circular marks suction-cup mounts can leave on the glass.) Sometimes a suction cup mount will work directly on a dashboard, but manufacturers also usually include an adhesive-backed disc that sticks to the dash and gives the suction cup a smooth place to stick. All manufacturers warn, however, that the adhesive on this disc can cause permanent damage to the dash. With these (significant) drawbacks in mind, we recommend windshield/dash mounts only for people who absolutely can’t use one of the other two types.

Vent mounts generally have rubber arms that firmly grip the slats in your car’s air vents, using one of various types of phone holders on the other end. We like these a lot, as they’re generally small mounted and easy to use without causing any damage to the vehicle. One problem, however, is that if you’re blasting hot air from the vent in the winter, that heat can cause the phone to overheat and shut down. Given that our survey respondents said that they turn on the heat in an average of 4.7 months of the year, this could be an issue for many people a good portion of the time. Additionally, the weight of today’s increasingly larger phones makes a mount’s sturdiness especially important, and depending on the car, the mount, and the phone, a vent mount that’s not secure can result in drooping, bouncing, or other issues.

The Ram Mount X-GRIP series looks a little cumbersome, but don’t let looks fool you. The X-Grip is available in several form factors depending on whether you want your mount to live in your cup holder and bring your phone up to hand-level, sit in your air vent, or attach to the dash or windshield via suction cup. In almost all of them you get an adjustable arm and that X-shaped attachment arm that holds your phone securely thanks to an adjustable knob that can tighten down or loosen the arms of the grip to fit your phone. The arm itself is adjustable too, so you can swivel it into the perfect position for you, and it holds your phone securely without vibrating or wiggling around. There are even extension options for the arm so you can mount it closer to you if you need it, and X-Grip models for larger devices like phablets and full-on tablets. If you prefer a dashboard or windshield mount, you need to consider Logitech Drive One-Touch. With one quick twist, it mounts to your dashboard or your windshield, and it can be removed just as easily. This mount is ideal for those who use multiple vehicles and need the car mount to transfer easily; it's also great for single-vehicle households with multiple drivers.

Now we need some thin and small magnets. We can stack them together if we need more “pull” so mounted let’s buy a bunch of 15 x 1mm N52 Strong Disc Rare Earth Neodymium Magnets. eBay is about the cheapest source I could find.

The size. The Montar Air is a bit less bulky than the TYLT VU and takes up less space in your windshield. That space could be useful.
It grips better and easier. It’s easier to get a good grip on your device with the Montar Air than it is with the TYLT VU. My device has slipped out of the TYLT VU on occasion, but I have no concerns with that happening when I use the Montar Air.
The release mechanism is faster. For some odd reason, the TYLT VU has a slow release mechanism so you need to wait (probably only a second) to pull your device out. The Montar Air release just pops open.
The Montar Air uses microUSB to power the Qi charger, but the TYLT VU doesn’t. So if your friend’s Android phone isn’t as cool as yours and doesn’t have wirless charging, they’re not out of luck; just unplug the Montar Air and charge away. The Montar Air feet even have a gap in them so devices can easily receive wired power. With the TYLT VU, you’d need a seperate microUSB cable to help your friend out.

The Explorer2 is a true go-anywhere solar charger. It weighs under a pound (14.8 ounces) and folds down to a compact 4.5 by 9.5 inches, but unfolds to 27.25 by 9.5 inches. If you’re going for a day hike with only a small pack, the unit will fit nicely. It charges directly but only has a USB output—fine for most handheld devices, but for larger items you’ll need a separate power system. The four solar panels increased the charge of the 4S by about 35 percent in one hour. Corner grommets allow the unit to be strapped down or hung up. At under $100, the Explorer2 is a great value.

I don't have this particular mounted case, I have the life proof battery case so I know it's not exactly what you're looking for but it doesn't work with my life proof. The life proof battery case is super thin. What I did to make it work was stick the receptacle pad to the back of my case on the outside instead of putting it inside and it works just fine.

Your iPhone will stay securely in view, thanks to the magnetic universal adapter, which works well through most cases. The only downside is that Logitech only supports horizontal or vertical placement. It does not turn, swivel, or offer an mounted alternate angle. As long as you are satisfied with your iPhone's position, this won't be an issue, but it's good to know in advance.

For consumers with devices lacking built-in support for Qi wireless charging don’t leave yet. Put2Go has Qi wireless receivers for devices with a micro-USB, lightning, and type-C ports. For the Qi wireless receiver users, an extra nifty gadget is also available alongside it. To use the port without removing the receiver, a smart magnetic adapter is available. It’s reversible and also removes the wear and tear that would occur from constant usage of the port.

Position and glue the magnets on the inside of your phone case. It is helpful if you let the glued magnets on the inside of the wireless charger case dry a bit and then rest your phone case on the outside of the wireless charger case to position the magnets and the case. The magnetic bond between the phone case magnets and the wireless charger case magnets will hold them in place while the glue dries. Depending on the glue you select, it could take ten minutes to 24 hours to fully set. Loctite is sticky enough after ten minutes to do this step.

For the car, I’ll need a reliable plugin with good power delivery. I am using the Aukey Car Charger with Dual Quick Charge 3.0 Ports. I’ve also used the Anker 36W Dual USB Car Charger successfully.

For the office, I’ll need a good wall wart to power the Choetech 3 Coil Wireless charger. The Quick Charge 3.0 Aukey 2-Port USB Wall Charger gives me the ability to charge two of the Choetech devices from a single plug.

The Kenu Airframe is another smartphone mount that makes use of your car’s air vents as a mounted perfect place to keep your phone within arm’s reach for navigation and quick dialing, but still within an easy glance. Since I’ve got an extra USB port for charging, it’s handy to have an extra cable. I could use a second StrikeLine Pro, but I instead toss Skiva’s $50 ($19 on Amazon.com) 2-in–1 Lightning + Micro USB Charge and Sync Cable in my bag. The one-meter, USB-to-Lightning cable is sturdy, but what makes it especially useful is that the Lightning connector pops off to reveal a Micro-USB plug, so I can charge my Bluetooth headset, my portable Bluetooth speakers, or my Kindle. The removable Lightning connector (simply a Micro-USB-to-Lightning adapter) is permanently attached to the cable by a plastic “leash,” so it won’t get lost.

We recently tested two new magnetic mounts from TechMatte, and while we like the concepts behind both models, neither works as well as our current picks. The MagGrip Mini CD Magnetic Car Mount uses a spring-loaded system mounted to grip the inside of your car’s CD slot, rather than the thumbscrew of the standard MagGrip CD. Although this version is easier to use, we found the original model to be more sturdy in a wider array of CD slots. The MagGrip Orbit, meanwhile, is a vent mount that allows for a wide range of viewing angles thanks to a magnetic ball mechanism, but in our tests it was too heavy for our vents and wouldn’t stay where we wanted.

Logitech’s Logi ZeroTouch Air Vent Car Mount and Logi ZeroTouch Dashboard Cell Phone Holder are two different takes on the same concept. Like our top picks, these mounts use magnets to mounted hold your phone; both of the ZeroTouch mounts come with two metal stickers to attach to the back of your handset or case.

What makes the ZeroTouch mounts different is their smarts. They use NFC to launch a safe-driving app—currently exclusive to Android, though Logitech has promised eventual iOS support—on your phone when you place it on the mount. You mounted trigger voice commands by holding your hand an inch or so away from your mounted phone’s screen. Wirecutter writer and Android expert Kevin Purdy tested the rig extensively. “The app itself is as polished as any Distraction-Free/Car Mode app I’ve seen,” he said. “I have had no problems with text transcription, either reading or dictating. The Music launching is more advanced than Logi even gives it credit for, playing my podcast app (PocketCasts) when asked.” He noted, too, how important the automatic app-launching is, as it’s easy to forget to launch a driving app before you start driving, and difficult to then fumble around while driving to launch it later.

What you're paying for here is the mounted convenience of not having to fumble with a cable and aesthetics, these are the Vu cradle's main (and only) advantages. With the Vu, the phone can just be dropped into the cradle, saving a few moments at the beginning and end of each trip. Plus, the user can be more clever managing the fixed power cable for a tidier cabin. There's no denying that the Qi-wireless Tylt Vu charger is a slick and cool looking way to charge a phone on the go.

But at an MSRP of $79.99 (£59.95 in the UK and AU$108.99 in Australia), the Vu wireless car charging cradle is significantly more expensive than a conventional, nonpowered mount and USB car charging cable. Additionally, the wireless Vu charges more slowly than a cable, which is why I'll likely be sticking to a 1A USB charger for the foreseeable future.

The Airframe is a lot sturdier than I expected, it’s tiny and light, and it works great. It’s earned a permanent place in my bag.

To be clear, this won’t stay in one place during rapid acceleration and braking, but a quick mounted readjustment during driving is easy and it is nice to be able to bring it close when you need it for navigating and then moving it out of the way when it is playing music from a playlist or charging. I’ve found that it works even better as a passenger seat car mount because it is so easy to manipulate. Keep in mind that the cable isn’t strong enough to keep the iPhone aloft alone, it will need to be leveraged or wrapped around something.

In this instructable project, we will try to DIY a magnetic mount QI wireless charger. Most of us if not all have experienced what it's like to run low on battery, or worse run out of battery while we are out and about. If this happens while we are driving, just imagine the potential hazard of having to dig and untangle wires in order to charge our phones.

With this in mind I mounted came up with the idea to combine a magnetic mount and QI wireless charger. This way we can charge our phones by simply placing it on the magnetic dock as shown in the picture.

This is another neat little mount. Simply slide the attachment into a vent on your dashboard and slip the strong magnetic plate provided inbetween a case and your phone and voila - easy on and off and easy to adjust on the ball mount.

If you don't want to have the metal plate touching the back of your phone between it and your case, then the mount also comes with two circular magnets with adhesive backs to stick directly to the outside of a case or your phone. Bear in mind that the set doesn't come with a case like the red one pictured here.

Wireless charging isn’t fast, it’s not cheap, and not many phones have the feature built-in. There are ways to make your phone wireless charging capable, but that may ruin the convenience of the experience in the first place. So what I’m trying to say is, wireless charging isn’t for everyone. But I love it and I want more of it.

I’ve reviewed one other Qi wireless charging car mount here on Android and Me, mounted the TYLT VU Wireless Charging Car Mount. When I first reviewed it, I wasn’t terribly excited about the in-car wireless charging experience, but that changed when I changed devices. The experience changed so much that I wrote a follow-up review. Today I’m reviewing another in-car wireless charging device, the Montar Air Qi Car Mount by WinnerGear, the same company that introduced the world to reversible micro-USB. Spoiler alert: I like the Montar Air better than the TYLT unit in almost every way.

Finding the perfect mount for your smartphone in your car can feel like looking for a needle in a haystack. There are tons of options. Some flat out cheap, others pricey and heavy with widgets and features you may not need. Then there are others that are just right. This week we’re looking at five of the best, based on your nominations.

Earlier in the week we asked you for the best car smartphone mounts, and you weighed in with tons—we mean tons of great mounted nominations—enough that there’s something in there for everyone. The surfaces of the arms and cradle that come into contact with the phone are covered with a soft-touch rubbery material that is purple for my example, but gray is also available. The large charging surface is also embossed with the "TYLT" logo. Flip the cradle on its side and you'll find a small, dim indicator LED on the left edge. A solid green light indicates that everything is OK and faults are indicated by flashing. The glow is fairly dim, so it is barely noticeable in daylight and not at all distracting at night.

The cradle connects to an included mounting arm via a single ball joint. At the business end of that arm is a 2.8-inch-wide, semiadhesive "micro-gel" suction cup. The tacky cup locks into place with a lever and should stick to a dashboard as well as windshield glass.

2 Amp fast charging. The Montar Air is compatible with all Qi-supported devices, but the Montar Air also supports fast wireless charging. So if you’re lucky enough to have one of the few currently supported fast wireless charging devices, like the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ or Note 5, this could be the bees knees for you.
I like the Montar Air over the TYLT VU car mount in almost every respect. The one feature that I do prefer on the TYLT VU charger is the charging adapter. The Montar Air’s adapter looks like a cheap $0.99 eBay special car charger. It also lights up with a fairly bright blue light that I wish was a little more dim. Meanwhile, the TYLT’s charger has a clean, crisp design with a built-in USB port so that you can still charge your friend’s device as long as you have a cable with you. Everything else about the Montar Air’s design is great, but the charger seems a bit out of place and feels like an afterthought. That said, the Montar Air does use microUSB, so you might be able to replace the charging adapter with a different microUSB car charger, but I don’t know how that will affect the charging speeds.
