You know with Dyson you’re going to get something impressive, and this small robot vac didn’t disappoint. Although this one has the largest price tag, it’s the smallest and most compact (roughly the size of a Quality Street tin), taking up minimal space in the cupboard or at its charging dock. It’s simple to use – you leave it to charge and then press the (only) button to get it going. It works its way methodically around your home and if it gets stuck on rugs or shoes, it turns off, navigates its way back to safety and starts again. It maintains Dyson’s high suction power, although still not as good as a standard vacuum cleaner, and certainly sucked up the most dirt out of all the robots tested. There’s an app too, so you can schedule when you want your robot to start cleaning and the instruction manual is clear to follow (unlike others we read).
A younger sibling to electronics brand Anker, Eufy has created a reasonably priced robot vac that is certainly one to consider. Its simple, elegant design means it doesn't look out of place in a modern home and it’s easy to set up and use. Attach the sweeper brushes underneath the machine and charge using the docking station. Then switch on and use the remote (batteries not included) to set up the cleaning mode you desire – pick from auto, scheduled, spot clean, edge clean (for skirting boards) , maximum clean (similar to turbo) or single room clean. There are no accessories such as virtual walls but there are two replacement sweeper brushes. The robot works by bounding along the floor (it almost looks like it bounces) until it detects a wall or piece of furniture, after which it will change direction. The suction is good, while the side sweepers do an impressive job at collecting additional dirt. But the most impressive part is that it barely makes a sound - you can easily watch the TV or chat while it gets to work. It's a great option if you want to test out the world of robotics without spending too much.

Unlike the Roomba, the tiny Mint has no suction—again, it's not a vacuum—and ergo no place to store the dirt it encounters. This is its greatest flaw. The mint relies on reusable cloth pads or store bought Swiffer wipes that are somewhat clumsily tucked into its foot, whereupon it'll slide neatly across your floor, through dust and silt and whatever. It's not electronic manufacturing a very methodical slide, however—the Mint doesn't have the rigorous mapping of its competitors, navigating in lazy back and forths, avoiding walls, and often failing to link up with the "NorthStar" navigational unit that supposedly tells Mint where to go from above. Which is a shame, because the idea of outsourcing the nav process to a little box you can place anywhere is great! Shucks. Instead, the Mint just shuffles around like a quiet toddler. And in the process, it'll accumulate a giant, disgusting hairball in its wake. Remember, this isn't a vacuum.

Surprisingly, it works at getting dirt off the floor. Granted, it's in the most inelegant way—just dragging it along into one big snowballing dirt mound—but at the end of the cleaning cycle, my floors were clean. But what then? Regular sweepers are the most commonly seen. They are large, light blue and red-colored vehicles with one large eye and a funnel on top which spews out smoke. They have two large, rotating brushes in the front which suck up scrap, similar to vacuum cleaners. Why Do I Need Mini-Mole?
We know that it's difficult and time-consuming to clean dust, fur, and other debris from your floors. Hard-to-reach places—like underneath your furniture—are often overlooked or ignored.

In modern greenhouses there is a high demand to automate labour. The availability of a skilled workforce that accepts repetitive tasks in harsh greenhouse climate conditions is decreasing rapidly. The reduced capacity and the resulting increase in labour costs is putting major pressure on the competitiveness of the European greenhouse sector. Present robotization of this labour has entered a high level of technological readiness. However, a gap remains which halts the transition from science to economic and societal impact; the so called ‘Technological Innovation Gap’.

SWEEPER’s main objective is to put the first generation greenhouse harvest robots onto the market. Until now this has never been achieved and this will ensure Europe’s leading role in agricultural robotics. It will solve the current labour capacity problems in modern greenhouses, where harsh climate conditions and repetitive work puts pressure on the workforce supply. Without further mechanization, greenhouse food production will most likely migrate out of Europe due to increased labour costs, which has an expected increase in costs of 40% in the coming 10 years. Increasing the efficiency and reduced labour dependence will ensure Europe’s leading greenhouse food production yields and competiveness. SWEEPER secures moving into this direction. When a proven system is moved towards the market, it opens up a whole new high tech commercial area. Although SWEEPER aims at a singular crop, which has an estimated European yearly yield of 1,300,000,000 kg, knowledge and technology can be easily migrated to other greenhouse areas thereafter.

In the EU-FP7-project CROPS extensive research has been performed on agricultural robotics. One of the applications was a sweet pepper harvesting robot. It was shown that such a robot is economically and technically viable. In SWEEPER, the proven hardware and software modules developed in CROPS will be used as the groundwork, and the knowledge gained in CROPS will directly be put to benefit. The successful software modules based on the Robotic-Operating-System (ROS) will be maintained and expanded. Also the gripper end-effector will be retained. This patent pending module is able to grasp the sweet pepper without the need of an accurate measurement of the position and orientation of manufacturing the fruit. Further it was concluded that instead of a 9 degree of freedom (DOF), a 4DOF robot arm is sufficient, greatly reducing costs. To improve the level of robotic cognitive abilities, crop models will be applied to approximate location of sweet peppers. This “model-based vision” will increase and speed up fruit detection, localisation and rating of its maturity. Based on the insights of CROPS, sensors will be placed onto the gripper only. Also a time-of-flight sensor will be introduced which is able to record both colour and 3D information simultaneously. In CROPS it revealed that different growers use different cropping systems ranging in crop density. In SWEEPER, the cropping system itself will be optimized to facilitate robotic harvesting.

The SWEEPER objectives are:
1: Revise and improve the CROPS hardware and integrate it into a sweet pepper robot.
2: Develop and improve the software to control the robot.
3: Optimize the standard sweet pepper production system in order to make the robot perform best and demonstrate the final system.
4: Test the robot under laboratory and operational conditions in the greenhouse.
5: Support market introduction.

One great feature about the A4 is how quiet it is: it’s far more quiet than the Neato BotVac (which, again, has a lot more suction power) but a tad bit louder than the Braava (which just sweeps — and is near silent at that). In any case, the A4 can definitely be run “in the background” while you’re doing something like watching TV or listening to the radio or your favorite music or podcast.

I’ve witessed much more expensive cleaning robots have trouble getting back to their charging cradles (usually the rule is to give them 3 feet of clearance on all sides, but in many houses that just isn’t going to be possible). But the A4 always seems to find it’s way back to home base like a champ (and in my testing scenario there is only about a foot of clearance, or maybe even a little less, on each side of the charger). This is important because you wouldn’t want to go to turn on your robot and have it start cleaning only to find that it lost it’s way and hasn’t been charged.

Some people might really like the fact that this robot comes with a remote control. Personally I don’t use it much (ever, actually) because it’s just as easy for me to reach down and hit the on button (or just press it with a toe, ha). The remote does, however, have more options and can enable more features than you’d get if you chose not to use it.

I’d call the A4 well-built. I’m not worried about it breaking at all. It’s not as heavy as other robots (I’m thinking pretty specifically about the Neato here) and yet it doesn’t feel cheap.

4. Do you have a small apartment or studio?
Robot vacuums aren’t really built to handle large homes, and until iRobot develops an airborne Roomba, multi-story houses are a no-go. But if you live in a studio or a one-bedroom apartment, a robot vacuum can be a great way to keep your living space tidy.

Once you start adding additional rooms into the mix, the cost of running a robot vacuum begins to skyrocket. With the exception of the priciest Roombas, most robot vacuums can only effectively clean a single room. A Roomba can be set to clean additional rooms through the use of an iRobot Lighthouse (sold separately), which acts as a homing beacon, but the majority of robot vacs will get lost if they stray too far from home.

5. Do you have pets?
If you have cats or dogs, you already know how much of a hassle it can be to keep their hair under control. A robot vacuum will definitely save you a lot of time in this department—time you will now be able to spend recording and posting adorable “pets riding on Roombas” videos to YouTube.

Still, robot vacs have small dirt receptacles and can get clogged easily if your Great Pyrenees likes to bed down on the carpet.

The robots are meant to do their job safely and efficiently, and then put themselves away as quickly as possible. The main “interface” task they have is to keep nearby humans informed and safe. (Did Asimov write a law for vacuum cleaners?) A minor secondary goal might be to distinguish the function of each by their shape. The robots inform observers explicitly with the stanchion robots’ beacon lights and bright red patterns. In addition, the whirring sounds of each robot’s motors and actuators help to reinforce the fact that they are working. If they were completely silent they would be more problematic for people not looking or unable to see. The beacon might be a bit of overkill and distracting to someone at a distance, but since the robots are small enough to be a trip hazard, and Cornelius is in fact less than a meter away at the time of sweeping, I can see why it might be needed in this particular case. That they are each readily distinguishable means it might be easier to intervene or select a particular one for maintenance. So, aside from the faulty logic they’re meant to embody, mostly really well designed.

The XV-12 is the only serious competition. But it's really serious competition. If the Roomba is a great, reliable sedan, the XV-12 is a goddamn vacuum tank.

This robo vac is the largest of the bunch and looks like something you’ve probably seen avoiding Sir Killalot on Robot Wars. But it does a good job of sucking up dust and fluff from carpet, and so it should for the price. It’s robust, so will bounce off walls with no damage done to itself (or the wall) and is good at navigating around furniture. There are an impressive six electronic manufacturing cleaning modes to pick from – auto, manual, spot, point cleaning, turbo and dust sensor – and a remote so you can steer it to a particularly dirty spot. There’s an app too, so you can control it even when you’re not in your home. This robot is worth considering, although it doesn’t quite match the Dyson 360 Eye on suction.

4. AirCraft Vacuums Pilot Max Robotic Vacuum Cleaner: £271.44, Amazon

We think this one wins when it comes to looks. The sleek and compact white design would fit perfectly in modern homes and shouldn’t take up a lot of space either. It comes with sweeping brushes that electronic manufacturing stick out the side to sweep in and suck up dirt in corners, which is fairly effective. And it’s very quiet, so won’t disturb you if you’re watching TV. It also comes with a virtual wall, so you can block off areas you don’t want cleaning and a remote control. Our only annoyance was having to charge and put the battery pack in ourselves, which we found a little bit fiddly. For the price though, it does a decent job of vacuuming and is worth considering.

5. Neato Botvac Connected: £679.99, Amazon

This is the most advanced machine from the robot vacuum specialist, utilising the same navigation technology Google puts into its self-driving cars. It uses lasers to scan the room it’s cleaning, noting any obstacles and then returning to the same spot from which it started, which can be useful for storage. It has good suction, the power of which can be increased by switching on the turbo mode (this increases the machine’s speed and noise, too). It didn’t get stuck on the large rug in the middle of our testing room, which electronic manufacturing was a problem for some. The app, available for iOS and Android devices, means you control the vacuum’s actions from wherever you are, whether that be the office or the supermarket.

There is already a wide range of personal/domestic robots on the market capable of performing various tasks. We haven't however been able to find any commercially available robots designed for effectively performing the task of backyard sweeping. This thesis presents the process and end result of planning, assembly and programming of an autonomous robot, capable of performing the above mentioned task. We first analyze robots with similar functions, including robotic vacuum cleaners and lawn mowers in order to define design for the physical structure and the appropriate control logic for the robot, so that it will be able to carry out our task. In order to facilitate physical construction, we used an existing manual sweeper by the company Kärcher as our base platform, which was then upgraded with an electric propulsion, control system and various electronic manufacturing sensors. During development we took advantage of new technologies, such as 3D printing for physical construction and Arduino platform for control logic of the robot. The thesis also includes analytical process of the robot testing, performed in the backyard under realistic conditions. We analyzed the area of coverage, success rate of different type of obstacles detection and responsiveness of the remote control.

Robot vacuums have really come into their own as maintenance appliances. Think of them as support troops in the war on filth.

Having an iRobot or Miele vac programmed to give your floors a once-over every day makes a proper cleaning on the weekend that much easier. In fact, the simple truth of the matter is that robot vacuums are designed with this use in mind.

After running the A4 the laundry room floor has no litter pieces left — I’d call it completely clean. So this robotic vacuum/sweeper works really well and truly does an admirable cleaning job. If there’s electronic manufacturing a downside to how well this bot cleans it’s that it isn’t especially speedy. Whereas the Braava can clean my kitchen and dining room in about 15 minutes, the A4 takes at least 45 minutes (and often longer) to clean a much smaller area. The reason seems to be that this bot just doesn’t have a particularly smart brain; it often seems to roam about aimlessly and frequently goes over the same areas where it has already been. I guess that could be viewed as a “dumb” thing for this robot to do, but perhaps it’s one of the reasons it seems to do such a thorough job. However you slice it the A4 gets the floor swept and to be honest the length of time doesn’t bother me at all (since I usually turn it on before I head to bed or while I’m in another room or even before I head out to door).

I wouldn’t call the laundry area in my house isn’t the easiest place for a robot vacuum or sweeper — any robot vacuum or sweeper, budget or top-of-the-line — to clean. There’s a door to the room that we keep open but that presents an interesting obstacle to a robot. Usually the A4 has no issues getting around this door however it is positioned, but occasionally it returns to it’s charging cradle having been confused or thinking it has cleaned the entire intended area when it actually hasn’t. Outside the laundry room is a bathroom, a door to the garage with a mat in front of it and the top of the stairs leading to the basement. It never has any trouble cleaning the bathroom floor, doesn’t move or rearrange the mat in front of the garage door (something the Braava has trouble with) and never has any issues stopping itself from falling down the stairs.

In modern greenhouses there is a high demand to automate labour. The availability of a skilled workforce that accepts repetitive tasks in harsh greenhouse climate conditions is decreasing rapidly. The resulting increase in labour costs and reduced capacity puts major pressure on the competitiveness of the European greenhouse sector. Present robotization of this labour has entered an high level of technological readiness. However, a gap remains which halts the transition from science to economic and societal impact; the so called ‘Technological Innovation Gap’. In the EU-FP7-project CROPS extensive research has been performed on agricultural robotics. One of the applications was a sweet pepper harvesting robot. It was shown that such a robot is economically and technically viable. The proven hardware and software modules (TRL:6) developed in CROPS will be used as the groundwork. The successful CROPS software modules based on the Robotic-Operating-System (ROS) will be maintained and expanded in SWEEPER. Also the gripper end-effector will be retained. This patent pending module is able to grasp the sweet pepper without the need of an accurate measurement of the position and orientation of the fruit. From the CROPS project, also gained knowledge will directly be put to benefit. In several experiments, it turned out that electronic manufacturing different growers use different cropping systems ranging in crop density. In SWEEPER, the cropping system itself will be optimized to facilitate robotic harvesting. In CROPS it was concluded that instead of a 9DOF, a 4DOF robot arm is sufficient , greatly reducing costs. To improve the level of robotic cognitive abilities, plant models will be applied to approximate location of sweet peppers. This “model-based vision” will increase and speed up fruit detection. Based on the insights of CROPS, sensors will be placed onto the gripper only. Also a LightField sensor will be introduced which is able to record both colour and 3D information simultaneously.

Super Sweepers
These sweepers were designed by Ratchet, with the purpose of capturing and killing outmodes in mind. They loosely resemble the regular sweepers, with the exception that they are much electronic manufacturing bigger, shinier, and have a fin on top. Additionally, in the toy version, they also possess two large claws. Their mouths with sharp teeth contain a wide assortment of cutting tools such as saws, used to more efficiently kill outmodes. These sweepers never made it onto the streets of Robot City, as Rodney Copperbottom and Bigweld halted them by knocking them over like dominos before they could leave the Chop Shop during the film's final battle.

iRobot’s Roomba is probably the best known name in the robot vacuum cleaner market, and this is the best model in the range (with a price to reflect it, over £500 more expensive than the entry level Roomba). It methodically navigates multiple rooms, increasing or decreasing suction power depending on which surface it’s cleaning – we found it picked up large pieces of fluff as easily as it did embedded dust. If the machine runs out of electronic manufacturing battery mid-clean, it will return to the docking station and then complete the cycle. It also works with Google Home so you can now tell your Google Assistant when to start, stop or dock the robot. 7. Vileda Cleaning Robot: £80, Amazon

This is the cheapest machine we tested by some way, which naturally means it isn’t as jam-packed with features as its pricier counterparts. But that simplicity does sometimes often work in its favour. Three buttons on the top of the machine – S, M and L – correspond to whether you want it to clean a small, medium or large room, so you don’t have to worry about too much programming. It will do well on hard floors and short-pile carpet, but we found it struggled to manoeuvre over a large rug, left behind some embedded dust and was among the noisiest. For the price, however, this is a good entry-level machine.

Cleaning snow from driveway areas around apartment buildings is traditionally done manually. The use of snowplows for cleaning such small areas is economically impractical and difficult due to parked vehicles and the complex geometry of each site. However, the described job can be done effectively by a small-sized, highly mobile snow-loading robot based on the SRX1 platform. Its small dimensions allow this robot to easily clean zones previously accessible by shovels only. The robot is equipped with a front-mounted snow bucket for effective snow cleaning. In addition to removing snow from a flat road surface, the snow bucket allows the robot to move the collected snow and pour it into three-foot high piles.
