Introduction to ViewMate

ViewMate allows JewishGen participants to post photographs and documents online, and request help in translating or identifying information.

Here you can submit:

Photos: for identification of people, clothing, buildings, scenes, objects, artifacts, etc.
Letters, documents, book pages, maps, etc. for analysis or translation.
TIME LIMITATION: [Time subject to change]
Submitted images will have a limited view time of 168 hours (7 days).
Thereafter they can be placed in the searchable ViewMate Archive along with any responses you received.

You are requested to use this Web site responsibly. JewishGen reserves the right to remove any materials that come to its attention and which it determines to be objectionable.

Allows you to view Gerber files and to convert them to other formats.

ViewMate is a software solution designed to help you view the CAD data stored within Gerber files. Not only does the app import CAD and CAM aperture lists and display their content, but it also provides powerful editing tools. This application was specifically built to work as a viewer, so you cannot save or export files.

The user interface may seem a bit overwhelming at a first glance because the app comprises a lot of options. However, if you don’t get an idea of how this program functions, you can always check the help menu.

It imports several formats of Gerber data (e.g. Basic Gerber, Gerber Extended and MDA Autoplot) and translates HPGL, drill and aperture data into Gerber on import. You may also insert, delete or edit D Code definitions.

ViewMate allows users to perform several actions, such as enable layer visibility, make pads, traces and selected elements visible, change the selected items in white or in contrasting color, zoom in or out, pan the screen, and display the properties of certain elements. Moreover, it also provides tools for positioning and measuring such as cursor position and coordination, full-screen cursor, screen grid and marked locations.

There are several features that can help users edit the documents, and you are allowed to insert and edit new plot data and to edit the entire layers. You may insert a pad, trace, drawn rectangle, frame-sized rectangular polygon, circle, text, chord and tangent arc, and so many others.

When it comes to editing the files, the app provides several options, as you can delete, move, copy, transfer, replicate, rotate or snap the selected elements. Editing the layers is particularly simple, as you may move, align, transfer, delete or swap them with minimum effort.

Although this tool cannot save or export the adjustments made to your documents, it features a built-in option that enables the printing of multiple files on the go.

In conclusion, ViewMate proves to be a handy tool for all users who want to view and edit the CAD data stored within Gerber files.

To view Gerber and Excellon files generated by Dxf2gbr©, the Laserlab, Inc. AutoCAD .dxf to Gerber translator, we recommend using ViewMate by PentaLogix.

ViewMate is a free Gerber viewer program that allows you to view and measure virtually any Gerber file or Excellon drill file. The program is supplied as a self-installing executable file and runs on computers with Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7.

Option 1: Download from Pentalogix

Go to the Pentalogix ViewMate web site
Fill in the registration form. Make sure to enter a valid email address.
Submit the form. You should receive an email with the download password.
Use the password that you received via email to login.
Option 2: Download from Laserlab

Laserlab, Inc. keeps a copy of ViewMate available for download as a convenience for customers, but it may not be the most recent version. For the latest version of ViewMate, use Option 1 (above).

Laserlab's copy of ViewMate is named viewmate10_01.exe and is 10,184,258 bytes long. Download here.

Installation Instructions (not detailed)

Download to a convenient directory on your hard drive.
Run the program. This starts the installation process.
If you wish to remove ViewMate from your computer, use the Add/Remove Programs tool found in the control panel.
To view RS-274X Gerber files or Excellon drill files

Start ViewMate.
Go to File->Import->Gerber or File->Import->Drill&Route.
Note: Laserlab supplied Gerber files have a .gbr suffix and drill files have a .drl suffix.

Navigate to the directory containing the Gerber or Excellon files and select them.
Tip: You may select multiple files for loading by typing *.gbr in file name box, then use shift-select or control-select to pick them.

The 11.10 version of ViewMate Pro is provided as a free download on our website. Our built-in antivirus checked this download and rated it as virus free. This software is a product of PentaLogix. The software lies within Photo & Graphics Tools, more precisely 3D Design.

ViewMate Pro is designed for today’s power user. Now equipped with a DXF File Converter to give users the ability to convert Gerber to DXF and DXF to Gerber, ViewMate Pro has more value than ever before!

I have run into this exact problem myself. The issue is that Eagle is playing a bit "fast and loose" with the formatting of the drill coordinates, and this causes Viewmate to infer the incorrect scaling. I messed around for a while before I finally wrote a short Perl script that reads in the Eagle file and writes a fresh one with a fixed number of digits for the coordinate values, which Viewmate reads correctly.

Unfortunately, that script is on a different machine, and it will be several days before I have access to that machine again. When I do, I'll add the script here. In the meantime, maybe this is enough of a clue to get you unstuck.

View Mates Window

The View Mates window lists the mates for one or more components in an assembly.

To open this window:
Select components as described below. Then click View Mates .
Mates to view Component selection
Mates for one component of an assembly or one component of a subassembly Right-click the component.
Mates for more than one component Hold down Ctrl, click the components, and then right-click.
Mates that hold a subassembly in place within the assembly Right-click the subassembly in the FeatureManager design tree.
The View Mates window displays a list of mates for the selected components.

The icon indicates mates that are in the path to ground. These mates hold the part in position relative to the origin of the assembly. They are shown first on the list, with a horizontal bar separating them from other mates.

In the graphics area, components involved in the mate system for the selected components are slightly transparent. Components not involved are hidden.

When you select mates in the View Mates window:
The mate geometry highlights.
Mate callouts appear. They help you visualize the mates and perform common mate functions.

View Mate Errors Window

The View Mate Errors window lists all the problem mates in an assembly.

To open this window:
Right-click any component containing a problem mate and click View Mate Errors.

The View Mate Errors window displays a list of all problem mates in an assembly.

Problem mates are flagged as follows:
fm_exclamation_point.png Warning The mate is satisfied, but involved in over defining the assembly.
Error The mate is not satisfied.
In the graphics area, components involved in the problem mates are slightly transparent. Components not involved are hidden.
